Abhishek Banerjee skips Bengal CID’s third notice, seeks more time

Kolkata, June 9 (IANS): Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday ignored the third consecutive notice from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police for questioning in connection with an ongoing probe in the case of mismatches in signatures of some party legislators in an important resolution pertaining to important positions in the state Assembly, which are reserved for the Opposition bench.

Abhishek Banerjee, also the nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and who is currently in New Delhi, did not appear at the CID’s headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in Kolkata within the stipulated period of 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Instead, state police insiders said, the Trinamool Congress General Secretary had sent a communique to the CID seeking more time to appear because of his current presence out of Kolkata.

In his communique, Abhishek Banerjee had also referred to the scheduled hearing on Wednesday at a single-judge vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court on his petition challenging the CID summons and also seeking protection from coercive police action, including arrest, in the matter.

This is the third notice for questioning that had been ignored by the Trinamool Congress General secretary in the matter, the first being for appearance on June 1 and second being on June 8.

At the time the communique from Abhishek Banerjee reached the CID headquarter, two teams of the CID were conducting parallel raids and search operations at a party office of Trinamool Congress adjacent to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence at Kalighat in South Kolkata and also at an office at Camac Street in Central Kolkata, from where the party’s General Secretary used to operate.

Abhishek Banerjee left for New Delhi on the evening of June 6 and Mamata Banerjee reached the national capital in the evening of June 8.

Both attended the crucial meeting of the opposition Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc at New Delhi on June 8.

It is not yet known when they will return to Kolkata. They are in New Delhi at a crucial juncture when 20 out of 28 Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MPs have turned rebel under the leadership of the party’s four-time Lok Sabha members, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Satabdi Roy, and all of them have refused to accept the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee as the party’s General Secretary.

Odisha govt mulling to introduce new land law in upcoming Assembly session

Bhubaneswar, Jan 20 (IANS) The Odisha government is mulling introducing a comprehensive and updated law on land administration in the forthcoming session of the state assembly to replace multiple existing Acts related to land, revenue, and disaster management.

Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the move is intended to modernise the legal framework, noting that several current laws date back to the 1980s and no longer address present-day challenges.

Emphasising that land management is the top priority of the state government, Pujari said, “The time has come to do away with outdated Acts such as the Odisha Government Land Settlement Act and the Prevention of Government Land Encroachment Act. We need a unified and contemporary law that reflects today’s development needs and the vision of the new government for a developed and self-reliant Odisha.”

Highlighting the growing demand for land for infrastructure and public services, the minister said various sectors require land for expansion and development.

These include new railway lines, national highway projects, airports, state highways, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.

“Land is the foundation of development. Every department of the state government, as well as central agencies, requires land to carry forward projects that benefit the people,” he added.

Pujari said the proposed law will ensure optimal and transparent utilisation of land, prevent misuse, and prioritise allocation for public welfare.

The government also plans to reclaim land previously allotted to individuals or organisations but left unused or misutilised, bringing it back under the Revenue Department for redevelopment in the public interest.

The Minister emphasised that the new legislation will aim to balance development needs with equitable access, including provisions to support landless individuals, while ensuring that land across the state is put to productive and lawful use.

Union Minister Chouhan takes stock of agriculture sector amid positive outlook

New Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a high-level meeting on Monday to take stock of the progress of the agriculture sector.

Officials informed the minister that the outlook for the agricultural sector was bright as the area sown under kharif crops had increased due to a good monsoon. The water reservoir levels across the country have also gone up, which would lead to better irrigation facilities and crop yields ahead.

Besides, the rice and wheat stocks in government warehouses exceed the buffer stock requirement and would help in keeping prices in check.

The meeting covered a comprehensive assessment of kharif crop conditions, rabi sowing preparedness, crop situation in flood-affected areas, price trends, fertiliser availability, and reservoir storage levels. The Union Minister also issued necessary directions to concerned officials during the meeting.

Officials informed Chouhan that the total area under kharif crops has increased by 6.51 lakh hectares compared to the previous year. The total sown area stands at 1,121.46 lakh hectares, as against 1,114.95 lakh hectares in 2024–25. The meeting noted that sowing of major crops such as wheat, paddy, maize, sugarcane, and pulses has recorded an increase over the previous year. It was further informed that the area under urad (black gram) cultivation has risen by 1.50 lakh hectares — from 22.87 lakh hectares in 2024–25 to 24.37 lakh hectares in 2025–26.

The Union Minister also reviewed the situation in flood-affected regions. Chouhan, who recently visited districts impacted by floods and landslides in some states, was briefed that while excessive rainfall has affected crops in certain areas, other regions have benefited from a good monsoon, resulting in healthy crop growth that is expected to boost rabi sowing and overall production.

Officials further informed that sowing of tomato and onion is progressing smoothly. The area under onion cultivation has increased from 3.62 lakh hectares in 2024–25 to 3.91 lakh hectares now, while potato cultivation has expanded from 0.35 lakh hectares to 0.43 lakh hectares. Similarly, tomato sowing has grown from 1.86 lakh hectares during the same period last year to 2.37 lakh hectares this year. The meeting noted that the sowing of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes has progressed well in line with the set targets.

Officials also apprised the minister that the current rice and wheat stock levels are higher than the prescribed buffer norms, indicating a stable supply position.

Regarding water availability, Chouhan was informed that reservoir storage levels across the country are significantly better compared to the same period last year, as well as the average of the past decade. As of now, the 161 major reservoirs hold 103.51 per cent of last year’s storage and 115 per cent of the ten-year average storage, reflecting a positive outlook for agricultural productivity.

Chouhan also reviewed the availability of fertilisers and directed officials to ensure smooth and timely supply in the coming months. He instructed that close coordination be maintained with the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers to prevent any disruptions. Officials informed the Union Minister that continuous coordination is being maintained with states to assess and meet fertiliser requirements for the upcoming agricultural season.

Conduct immediate assessment of damage caused by rain, flood: Maha minister tells officials

Mumbai, Aug 18 (IANS) Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Jadhav-Patil on Monday directed the District Collectors in the state to conduct an immediate Panchanama (assessment) of damage of crops, orchards and other properties caused due to heavy rains and floods and submit reports on a priority basis.

The Minister’s directive comes as the intensity of rain has increased in the state and according to the forecast by the Meteorological Department, there will be more heavy downpour in next few days.

“The India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall in Vidarbha, Marathwada, Konkan regions for the next four days. The administration should be alert to provide immediate relief to the citizens of these areas,” said minister Jadhav-Patil.

He further added that the government stands firmly behind the farmers and the citizens affected by heavy rains and floods in various parts of the state. He asked the administration to focus in providing immediate help and relief to the affected people.

The minister instructed the district collectors to submit the Panchanama reports of the damage to the government through the concerned divisional commissioners.

Further, Jadhav-Patil said that in order to ensure that immediate assistance is provided to the families of citizens who die in natural disasters in the state and also to the injured citizens, the government has already delegated powers the district collectors to release necessary funds.

“If houses collapse due to heavy rain, or completely or partially damaged, then immediate Panchnama should be done and assistance should be provided to them. Similarly, if there is any loss to stall holders and small businessmen, immediate Panchnama should be carried out and assistance be provided to these affected people. In order to get this assistance immediately, the government has already delegated powers to the district collectors to provide financial aid,” said the minister.

He further instructed that he administration should swing into action to provide immediate relief to those affected by the damage to houses, animals and human lives caused by the heavy rains and floods that have been going on for the last two to three days.
