Manipur civil society groups hold demonstration in Delhi, seek PM’s intervention to restore peace

New Delhi/Imphal, Dec 23 (IANS) A few civil society groups from Manipur on Monday held demonstrations in New Delhi on Monday, seeking the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restore peace and normalcy in the ethnic conflict-ridden state.

The demonstrators claimed that the Central government’s silence and inaction led to Manipur exacerbating the situation in the state and turning the ethnic crisis more complex.

Under the banner of “Peace and Mutual Coexistence”, demonstrators urged the Prime Minister to address the ethnic divisions and initiate a peace process at the earliest.

“For 19 months, Manipur has been burning, and the silence of the Central government made the situation worse and the suffering of the people of the state continued. The ethnic crisis claimed the lives of around 260 people and displaced over 60,000 people, disrupted lives, and eroded trust among communities,” a protestor said.

He claimed that the livelihood of people and all sectors, including education, administration, health and other basic services and overall governance, have collapsed in Manipur.

The protesters emphasised the need for the immediate resettlement of displaced people and resumed talks to rebuild peace and harmony. They also highlighted the geopolitical importance of Manipur, urging the Central government to protect the territorial and ethnic integrity of the state.

The demonstrators appealed to the Prime Minister to visit Manipur personally, engage with affected communities, and demonstrate leadership by initiating a roadmap for lasting peace and unity. Their plea underscored the urgency of decisive action to heal the wounds of a fractured state.

On December 9 and 10, the Congress-led INDIA Bloc parties from Manipur and ten Kuki-Zo tribal MLAs separately held demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, urging the Prime Minister to visit the violence-hit-state and resolve the 19-month-long ethnic hostilities at the earliest.

Reiterating their demands for a separate administration or Union Territory (UT) for tribals in Manipur, the tribal MLAs sought the Prime Minister’s intervention to stop violence in the northeastern state.

Dupatta dislodging row: BJP worker lodges complaint against Siddaramaiah with K’taka Women’s Commission

Mandya (Karnataka), Dec 23 (IANS) A complaint was lodged against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah with the Karnataka State Women’s Commission on Monday in connection with the controversial incident of dislodging of dupatta of a woman while snatching a microphone from her.

The incident took place in 2019 in Varuna Constituency in Mysuru district during an event.

BJP Mandya Spokesperson C.T. Manjunath has lodged a complaint in this regard and urged the Women’s Commission to take up a suo moto case regarding the incident.

The complaint has been sent online. In his complaint, Manjunath has urged the President of the State Women’s Commission, Nagalakshmi Choudhary, to lodge a complaint against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah like how the Commission took up a suo moto case against BJP MLC C.T. Ravi in connection with his alleged derogatory statement against Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar.

“In this incident, CM Siddaramaiah had dragged the dupatta of a woman and insulted her. We don’t know whether that woman had lodged a complaint or not. There might be a chance that the woman might have been threatened not to file a complaint,” Manjunath stated.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah landed in a controversy in January 2019 when he engaged in a verbal duel with a woman and snatched the microphone from her, dislodging her dupatta in the process at an event in Varuna in Mysuru.

The incident which occurred during a public interaction organised by Siddaramaiah, his son, then MLA Yathindra who represented Varuna Assembly constituency, and others, was caught on camera and the video of the incident had gone viral.

The meeting convened to discuss strengthening the party base in the constituency, was earlier held by Siddaramaiah, ahead of the Lok Sabha election.

While the BJP had condemned the incident, then Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Rekha Sharma said the panel would write to Karnataka Police seeking appropriate action on the matter.

The video showed a wordy duel between Siddaramaiah and Jamalar, a former district panchayat member, who said she was upset that his son Yathindra “showed up” seven months after getting elected.

Siddaramaiah maintained that his son keeps visiting the constituency, which she strongly contested.

The woman tapped the table, further enraging Siddaramaiah who shouted at her and forcibly asked her to sit.

As she beat the table the second time, Siddaramaiah lost his cool and snatched the microphone with which the dupatta got entangled.

Siddaramaiah later took to Twitter (now X) to play down the incident, saying that it was an accident and that the woman is like his sister.

“When I was trying to stop a long speech of a party worker, that incident happened, it was an accident… there was no bad intention. I have known her for 15 years, she is just like my sister,” he had tweeted.

Bihar STF arrested 123 Maoist operatives this year: Official

Patna, Dec 23 (IANS) The Special Task Force (STF) of the Bihar Police has made significant progress in curbing Maoist activities in 2024, arresting 123 operatives, including 11 high-profile individuals with rewards on their heads, a top official said.

Amrit Raj, Additional Director General (ADG) of STF, said that northern Bihar is free from Maoist activities.

The STF has effectively eradicated Maoist movements in North Bihar, he said.

ADG Amrit Raj credited this to the arrest of prominent operative Ram Babu Ram in 2023, which marked a turning point.

“Security forces have restricted Maoist activities to eight districts of Bihar, like Gaya, Nawada, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Kaimur, Munger, Lakhisarai, and Sheikhpura. We are making efforts to stop their revenue generation,” he said.

Amrit Raj pointed out that the STF destroyed opium plantations spanning 2,523 acres in these districts, targeting a critical source of Maoist funding.

The STF has recovered Rs 56 lakh in extorted funds during raids across affected districts.

“Under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), 32 cases have been registered, leading to the attachment of movable and immovable assets worth Rs 6.75 crore. We have also recommended to the Enforcement Directorate to attach properties valued at Rs 8.97 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). So far, assets worth Rs 4.9 crore have been successfully attached,” Amrit Raj said.

“We have constituted a dedicated team for the investigation of 18 specific cases involving Maoist operatives. Legal proceedings are progressing smoothly,” he said.

Under the surrender and rehabilitation programme, 22 Maoist operatives have surrendered before Bihar Police since 2020.

In a bid to improve infrastructure for the security forces in the Maoist-affected districts, a total of 85 police station buildings were completed in the first phase. Under the second phase, 27 buildings were proposed, of which 25 have been constructed.

The Bihar government has constructed 1,814 km of roads in Maoist-affected regions and established 93 mobile towers. 35 additional mobile towers are under construction to enhance communication in remote areas.

The STF has established 11 Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) at strategic locations in deep forests and hilly terrain.

Andhra to provide 34 pc quota to backward classes in local bodies

Amaravati, Dec 23 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Monday announced that the government has decided to provide 34 per cent reservation to backward classes in local bodies.

He said the TDP-led NDA Government is committed to implementing 34 per cent reservation for BCs in nominated posts as promised. A law will also be enacted in this regard.

Naidu said a decision would soon be taken on making legislation. He promised that all the necessary measures would be taken to ensure that the 34 per cent quota for BCs would not face any legal issues. He asked officials to go ahead after a detailed study of the court judgments.

He alleged that the previous government reduced the quota for BCs from 34 per cent to 24 per cent in local bodies and as a result, they lost 16,500 posts.

Chairing a review meeting on the progress of the promises being implemented to the BCs that have been made during the electioneering, the Chief Minister on Monday directed the officials to do some more exercise to see to it that there will be no legal tangles or technical snarls will arise to the special law proposed for the safety and security of the BCs.

As promised during the recent Assembly elections, he said a special legislation will be brought for the safety of the community.

A ministerial committee, formed to study the feasibility of the move, recently submitted its preliminary report on this. During Monday’s review meeting, the officials briefed the Chief Minister on this preliminary report after which he directed them to do some more exercise on this so that there will not be any legal tangles after the law is enacted.

Naidu alleged that because of the negligence adopted by the previous ruling dispensation, the BCs suffered heavily.

The Chief Minister gave clear instructions to the officers to undertake necessary repairs on a war footing basis to the girls’ hostels. He also directed the officials to clear the dues of diet bills which have been pending for a long time.

A total of Rs 110.52 crore of diet bills were pending during the previous government and after the TDP-led NDA came to power, bills worth Rs 76.38 crore were cleared. On Monday, the Chief Minister told the officers to clear the remaining bills too.

Mumbai’s Tanush Kotian added to national team ahead of Melbourne Test: BCCI (Ld)

New Delhi/Mumbai, Dec 23 (IANS) Mumbai’s off-spin all-rounder Tanush Kotian has earned a surprise call-up to join the Indian team as an additional player ahead of the Boxing Day Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed on Monday.

Sources have earlier in the day told IANS that Kotian, who’s currently representing Mumbai in the league stage matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Ahmedabad, will depart for Australia on Tuesday afternoon.

“Axar Patel was supposed to go to Australia, but with the birth of his first child, he’s gone back home and Kotian has been asked to join the Test team in Melbourne,” the source said.

Kotian is currently one of the best off-spin all-rounders in the Indian domestic circuit. He was previously part of the India A team which toured Australia for two four-day matches in Mackay and Melbourne ahead of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, currently tied at 1-1.

The BCCI confirmed the news later in the evening via a statement issued by Joint Secretary Devajit Saikia.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has named all-rounder Tanush Kotian as an addition to India’s squad for the fourth and fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“The off-spinner from Mumbai has played 33 first-class matches, taking 101 wickets at an average of 25.70. In addition to his bowling achievements, Kotian has three five-wicket hauls and has scored two centuries and 13 half-centuries. He was part of the India A squad and participated in the second first-class game against Australia A at the Melbourne Cricket Ground,” Saikia said in the statement.

Kotian’s first call-up to the Test team comes after veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket following the rain-hit third Test ending in a draw at the Gabba, Brisbane. He will now be one of the three spin-bowling all-rounder options for India alongside the off-spin of Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja’s left-arm spin. While Sundar played the first Test in Perth, Jadeja featured in the third match of the series in Brisbane.

In the 2023/24 Ranji Trophy season, Kotian picked 29 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 16.96. He also amassed 502 runs with the bat, including five half-centuries and one century to earn Player of the Tournament in Mumbai’s 42nd Ranji title triumph.

Overall, Kotian has played 33 first-class matches – scoring 2,523 runs at an average of 41.21, while picking 101 wickets and averaging 25.7, including three five-wicket hauls. In Monday’s Group C match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Kotian was named Player of the Match after an all-round showing of 2-38 and making 39 not out off 37 balls with the bat to give Mumbai a three-wicket victory.
