PKL Season 11: U Mumba rout Tamil Thalaivas, move closer to playoffs spot

Pune, Dec 11 (IANS) Former winners U Mumba delivered a dominant display against Tamil Thalaivas in Match 106 of Season 11 of the Pro Kabaddi League, winning 47-31 in the Badminton Hall of the Balewadi Sports Complex here on Wednesday. Led by Ajit Chouhan’s Super 10, Manjeet’s nine points and Amir Mohammad Zafardanesh’s eight-point game, they completed a 15-point rout as they jumped back to second place on the points table.

It was a rollicking start for U Mumba who were breathing fire in the first six minutes, rocketing to a 9-0 lead. Amirmohammad Zafardanesh and Ajit Chouhan came out all guns blazing to put Tamil Thalaivas under pressure from the start and inflicted an All Out without wasting much time at all.

Tamil Thalaivas responded strongly after having their backs against the wall, courtesy of Moein Shafaghi getting some momentum for his side. They inflicted an All Out of their own, closing the gap to make it a close contest after a rapid start to the game.

The two teams went back and forth in the closing stages of the first half before U Mumba imposed themselves on their opponents again. The season two champions got their noses in front once more, inflicting another AllL Out to close out the first half with a 22-14 lead.

Moein Shafaghi got a couple of points on a do-or-die Raid early in the second half to try and give Tamil Thalaivas some momentum as they looked to close the gap on the opposition. However, he was fighting a lone battle as U Mumba kept hold of their eight-point lead heading into the final ten minutes of the contest.

Ajit Chouhan and Manjeet carried on their superb raiding form, while Amirmohammad Zafardanesh also contributed on both ends of the mat, ensuring U Mumba stayed on top in this contest. Ajit Chouhan completed his Super 10 as his team extended their lead to 13 points with under five minutes to go.

U Mumba inflicted a third ALL OUT on the Tamil Thalaivas, putting the result of the game beyond all doubt with an unassailable lead as the clock ran down. They continued to pile on the misery on Tamil Thalaivas, eventually completing a 15-point rout as they moved to second place on the points table. Meanwhile, Tamil Thalaivas now find themselves in a difficult spot, needing to win all their remaining matches to have a chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

Women’s Jr Asia Cup: China edge out India 2-1 to top Pool A

Muscat, Dec 11 (IANS) China defeated India 2-1 in a tightly-contested third Pool A match at the Women’s Junior Asia Cup here on Wednesday as they topped Pool A. By winning these three points, China confirmed their spot in the semifinals as the Pool A winners.

In the crucial clash on Wednesday, Jinzhuang Tan (32’) and Lihang Wang (42’) were the goalscorers for China while Deepika (56’) scored her seventh goal for India to lead the tournament’s top scorer’s leaderboard.

The first quarter saw both sides attack aggressively on all fronts looking for an early opening goal. India created plenty of chances but wasn’t incisive enough in the shooting circle.

India received an early penalty corner but their attempt on goal was saved by China’s strong backline. China too received a penalty corner towards the end of the first quarter. Jinzhuang Tan took a powerful shot on goal which was met by a crucial save by Nidhi, India’s goalkeeper to keep the scores level.

In the second quarter, India received two back-to-back penalty corners but couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity and score the first goal. After a tightly fought first half, both sides couldn’t be separated and headed back into their dugout with no goals scored.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, Xueling Zeng of China launched a dangerous counterattack as she dribbled past the Indian defence from the left wing and was ultimately brought down by Nidhi in the shooting circle and won a penalty stroke for her side. Captain Jinzhuang Tan stepped up to take the stroke and bagged the first goal with a powerful shot past Nidhi.

China built on the momentum and created a plethora of chances after taking the lead. In the 42nd minute, China scored through a penalty corner as their top-scorer, Lihang Wang drag flicked the ball into the net to increase the advantage.

China enjoyed a two-goal lead heading into the final quarter and ended the game strong by dictating the tempo of the game and dominating possession. India gave a final push in the dying minutes of the match to get one goal back. They won the ball in a crucial position and Kanika Siwach played the perfect pass to Deepika who scored a goal from close range. With that, India reduced the deficit but couldn’t manage an equaliser and lost the game 2-1.

No development work took place in last 5 years, claim Mehrauli constituency residents

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Amid the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) public outreach programme ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi, the people of Mehrauli Assembly constituency claim that no developmental works have been undertaken since the last five years in the national capital under the current government’s tenure led by Chief Minister Atishi.

Sharpening its attack on the Delhi government over its failure to undertake any development in the constituency area, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the AAP government as Naresh Yadav is currently the MLA from Mehrauli Assembly constituency.

Several residents of Mehrauli constituency told IANS about the lack of basic civic amenities such as electricity, water, roads, sewage, etc.

A local resident Suraj said, “No work has been done here. The promise of providing Ganga water has also not been fulfilled yet. No development has taken place for the last 10 years, even the water lines have not been laid. The old water line which was laid down during the previous Congress government is still being used. There is no water and sewer facility, with sewage water overflowing in the streets. But no one tried to get it fixed. The promises made by Aam Aadmi Party have not been fulfilled till now. In mohallas and settlements, senior citizens were not even paid monthly pensions on time. As the elections are coming near, pension applications are being distributed and many more announcements are being made now only for electoral gains.”

Another local resident Ram Prakash said, “I am not happy with the work of the present AAP government and the local MLA. The condition of roads in our area are in pathetic condition, drinking water woes also persist. The AAP MLA in our area is Naresh Yadav. He has been a legislator from here for the last 10 years, but he has not done any development. He only comes asking for votes at the time of elections. There are potholes on the roads, dirty water is emanating from the water taps, due to which people are falling ill.”

He further added: “Accidents often happen on the roads and people get injured. The promise made to build roads like those in foreign countries was also not fulfilled. The condition of Mohalla clinics is so bad that they have become garbage heaps and some Aam Aadmi Party people sit there, drink alcohol and have fun. If you want, I can take you to Lado Sarai or Mukhiya Colony and show that no developmental work has been done there. The AAP only spends money on promotions through advertisements with their party posters being printed, but the reality is that no substantial work has been done here. We and the entire people of Mehrauli are not happy with them.”

Another local resident Mahendra said, “The promises made by the Aam Aadmi Party in our area, like building beautiful roads and providing facilities like in foreign countries have not been fulfilled till now. There was talks of ending water shortage but that, too, has not been resolved yet. There was no improvement in terms of roads, water and other basic facilities. The MLA has not done any special work, and I am not at all satisfied with him. Nothing concrete has been done here, only promises were made which have not been fulfilled till now.”

A local resident Tara Devi said, “There is a lot of water shortage in my area. We do not get water at all during summers. Some water still comes in winter. The roads in our area are also in very bad condition. Even the drains keep overflowing on the roads. There is no one to see and resolve our problems. Drain water keeps flowing till the entire street. We live with a lot of suffering.”

ISL 2024-25: Irfan scores winner as Chennaiyin battle for gritty win over Hyderabad FC

Chennai, Dec 11 (IANS) An early goal from Irfan Yadwad was the decider in Chennaiyin FC’s first home win of the Indian Super League 2024-25 season, a 1-0 triumph over Hyderabad FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday. It turned out to be an apt celebration for head coach Owen Coyle’s milestone 50th game in charge.

Coyle, on Wednesday, became the first Chennaiyin FC head coach to reach the 50-match mark, as his team battled for three points amid difficult circumstances.

Looking for a reaction from his team, Coyle opted for Bikash Yumnam in central defence alongside captain Ryan Edwards. Laldinliana Renthlei and PC Laldinpuia guarded the wings, while further forward, Kiyan Nassiri made his first start of the season.

Chennaiyin enjoyed a blistering start in the torrential downpour, with Wilmar Jordan Gil and Kiyan both testing their luck early before Irfan put the home side ahead in the fifth minute. Latching onto an incredible through pass from playmaker Lukas Brambilla, the Indian striker squeezed the ball into the net from close range.

The Marina Machans nearly produced a second goal later on when Dinaliana’s teasing cross missed Irfan by millimetres. At the other end, custodian Mohammad Nawaz produced a fine, low stop to deny Andrei Alba’s effort from distance. Near the interval, however, Coyle was forced to make an unforeseen substitution, with Elsinho replacing the injured Edwards.

Seven minutes after the restart, Kiyan took on and beat his marker on the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross into the box, which Jordan Gil fired over the bar on a volley. Minutes later, the Colombian forward sent his strike partner, Irfan, through on goal, who shot narrowly wide from a tight angle. Close to the hour, Coyle was forced into another change when his first-half substitute, Elsinho, suffered a serious collision and was stretchered off the pitch under medical care.

Chennaiyin finished the game with ten men after Shields was sent off by the referee for a second bookable offence. Despite the setbacks, the Marina Machans emerged from the game with three points and will now look to build on their success in their next match against Mumbai City on December 21.

PSBs were UPA’s ATM for cronies: FM Sitharaman rebuts Rahul Gandhi’s allegations

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday issued a strong rebuttal of allegations made by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi on the performance of India’s banking sector, especially Public Sector Banks (PSBs), stressing that during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) tenure, PSBs were treated as ‘ATMs’ for their ‘cronies and shady businessmen’.

In a series of lengthy tweets, FM Sitharaman said that Rahul Gandhi’s penchant for making baseless statements is on full display, yet again.

“India’s banking sector, especially Public Sector Banks (PSBs), have seen a remarkable turnaround under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Didn’t the people who met with the LoP tell him that high concentration of corporate credit and indiscriminate lending during UPA tenure had resulted in significant deterioration in the health of PSBs?” asked FM Sitharaman.

“It was actually during the UPA regime when bank employees were harassed and forced to give loans to cronies through “phone banking” by the then Congress-led UPA Govt functionaries,” the Finance Minister posted on X.

Sitharaman also detailed the financial support extended to PSBs, noting that the government had recapitalised them with Rs 3.26 lakh crore over the last decade.

She argued that this investment not only benefits the banks but also the public, as dividends from PSBs serve as a source of income for investors.

“The Public also has a shareholding in the PSBs and dividends are the source of income for such investors also. Not just for the GoI. Didn’t the people who met with the LoP tell him that during the UPA rule these PSBs paid dividends of Rs 56,534 crore?” said FM Sitharaman.

In his X post, Rahul Gandhi had alleged that PSBs were designed to give every Indian access to credit.

“The Modi government has turned these lifelines of the masses into private financiers for only the rich and powerful corporations,” he alleged, claiming that PSBs “are being forced to prioritise profit over people and are thus unable to serve the public effectively”.

FM Sitharaman countered Rahul Gandhi’s allegations, saying citizen-centric governance and inclusive development is the core principle of PM Modi government.

“Didn’t the people who met with the LoP tell him that 54 crore Jan Dhan accounts and more than 52 crore collateral-free loans under various flagship financial inclusion schemes (PM MUDRA, Stand-Up India, PM-SVANidhi, PM Vishwakarma) have been sanctioned?” she asked.

FM Sitharaman also mentioned the PM MUDRA scheme where 68 per cent of beneficiaries are women and under the PM-SVANidhi scheme, 44 per cent of beneficiaries are women.

“Didn’t the people who met with the LoP tell him that loans up to Rs. 10 lakh have increased by 238 per cent in the last 10 years, and their share in total loans has also increased from 19 per cent to 23 per cent?” said the finance minister.

On the issue of recruitment drives in the banking sector, she said that since 2014, PSBs had recruited nearly 3.94 lakh employees and as of October 2024, 96.61 per cent of officers and 96.67 per cent of subordinate staff were in position.

She further said that Rahul Gandhi’s misrepresentation of facts is an insult to the hardworking PSB employees and to the citizens who benefit from a cleaner, stronger banking system.

“It’s high time the @INCIndia up-skills the LOP’s understanding of governance,” said FM Sitharaman.

FIFA confirms Saudi Arabia as host of 2034 World Cup finals despite controversy

Zurich (Switzerland), Dec 11 (IANS) International Football Federation, FIFA on Wednesday decided the hosts for the two upcoming editions of its flagship men’s World Cup, controversially confirming Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 event while picking Spain, Portugal and Morocco as joint hosts for the 2030 tournament.

FIFA confirmed Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 World Cup despite concerns raised by many organisations over the country’s alleged history of human rights violations. The hosts for both World Cups were confirmed at Wednesday’s Extraordinary FIFA Congress meeting following a vote. All 211 of Fifa’s member nations were represented at the meeting over a video link.

Three matches in the 2030 tournament will be held in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark 100 years of the competition. The opening match of that event will be played in Uruguay, which hosted the inaugural 1930 finals, with the next two games to be staged in Argentina and Paraguay respectively before the rest of the tournament is played in the three main co-host countries.

The hosts for both tournaments and the 2030 centenary celebrations, were conducted via two separate votes. The first confirmed Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina as the centenary hosts.

The Extraordinary FIFA Congress then confirmed the three hosts for 2030, while Saudi Arabia was awarded the 2034 tournament. Saudi Arabia was the sole bidder for the tournament finals to be played in 10 years. The Middle-East nation, as well as the host for the 2030 edition, got the nod with an online FIFA Congress voting by acclamation in favour of their staging.

Saudi Arabia was the only interested party in the voting as the agreement for South America to stage the opening games in 2030 – reached in October last year – paved the way for them to get the 2034 finals.

Saudi Arabia confirmed their interest in hosting on the same day the 2030 agreement was made public, with FIFA limiting further expressions of interest to nations from the Asian and Oceania confederations and setting a deadline of less than a month to declare that interest.

With FIFA showing its interest in getting Saudi Arabia to host the event, many of its members have expressed disappointment over the decision because of the controversy over alleged violation of human rights by the regime.

The Norwegian football federation announced on Tuesday it would abstain from any vote by acclamation, and said the process FIFA had followed to determine the 2030 and 2034 hosts was “flawed”.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International said last week there had been a “deafening silence” from national governing bodies over Saudi’s hosting, compared to how many spoke out regarding Qatar’s staging of the 2022 finals.

The European countries too were opposed to Saudi Arabia hosting the World Cup in 2034 because of their plans to organise the event in winter. Any efforts to stage the 2034 finals in winter to avoid searing daytime temperatures in the summer are set to be opposed by Europe’s domestic leagues, who are already involved in a legal action against FIFA.

So, the battle for 2034 has not ended with FIFA picking Saudi Arabia, it will continue for the next few years both in the courts and on international forums.

Mamata announces inauguration date of Jagannath Temple at Digha, BJP questions state funding behind it

Kolkata, Dec 11 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday, announced that the inauguration of the Jagannath Temple at Digha, on the lines of the iconic Puri Jagannath Temple, will be done in April next year on Akshaya Tritiya (April 30).

During a visit to the site, the Chief Minister said that she promised to construct a Jagannath Temple near the sea beaches of Digha. “The work has been completed after three years. The inauguration will be done on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya next year,” the Chief Minister said.

However, the Chief Minister was not willing to draw any comparison of the new temple with the iconic one at Puri. “The one at Puri was built by the royal family. This one is totally a state government initiative,” the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari claimed that as per the documents of the state government, the name of the under-construction temple at Digha is Jagannath Dham Cultural Centre and the implementing agency is the state-run Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO).

“Now the Indian Constitution does not allow government investment behind any religious project. This is an unconstitutional effort by the state government and we are against such efforts. The Puri temple will always remain in the hearts of millions of traditional Hindus as one of the four Dhams,” the Leader of the Opposition said.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister had clarified that since she is against any kind of political interference in the matter of the temple at Digha, she has refrained from being a member of the trustee board of the temple.

“Whatever I have done has been as a volunteer. Now the affairs will be managed by the trustee board members,” the Chief Minister said.
