Odisha: Vigilance unearths assets worth crores during raids

Bhubaneswar, April 16 (IANS) The Odisha Vigilance on Wednesday unearthed assets worth crores during raids at different places linked to a senior government official in Angul district.

“On the allegation of possession of assets disproportionate to the known sources of income, simultaneous house searches were conducted on the properties of Rama Chandra Satpathy, Assistant Executive Engineer, Athamallick Block in Angul district on April 16 at eight places in Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, and Kalahandi districts,” said a senior vigilance official.

He said that the places where searches were carried out include the residential house of Satpathy at Gayatri Nagar in Dhenkanal town, his official quarter in Athamallick, his paternal house at Banasingh under Sadar police limits in Dhenkanal district, his son-in-law’s residence at Junagarh in Kalahandi district, etc.

The official added that as many as eight teams of Odisha Vigilance, comprising seven Deputy Superintendents of Police, 15 Inspectors, and other supporting staff, conducted the search on the strength of Search Warrants issued by the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack on Wednesday.

“The cops during the raid found that Satpathy and his family are in possession of assets including one double-storeyed building in Dhenkanal, one high-value plot in Barang area of Cuttack district and another 20 plots in and around Dhenkanal town,” he said.

Sources said that the actual value of the landed plots is likely to be much higher than the Registered Sale Deed (RSD) value that stood at around Rs. 60 to .85 Lakhs.

The Vigilance Technical Wing has been carrying out measurement and valuation of the above building and plots possessed by Satpathy to ascertain the actual value of these assets.

The vigilance sleuths also unearthed cash worth Rs 23.95 lakhs during the house search of Satpathy’s son-in-law, Dr.Tapan Kumar Tripathy, Medical Officer, CHC, Junagarh. Both Satpathy and his son-in-law are being interrogated to ascertain the source of funds.

The anti-corruption officials further unearthed gold ornaments weighing 350 grams, bank, postal and Insurance deposits worth Rs1,06,66,475, two four-wheelers and two two-wheelers, household articles worth over Rs17.31 lakhs.

24-hour coastal shutdown against offshore mining in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 27 (IANS) All fishing activities in Kerala have come to a grinding halt after the Fisheries Coordination Committee called for a 24-hour total coastal shutdown protesting against the Centre’s move to mine the sea off the Kollam coast.

The Committee includes members from the traditional political fronts in the state — the ruling CPI(M)-led Left and the Congress-led UDF.

The protesters want the Centre to revoke the decision to allow sand mining from three blocks off the Kollam coast with a total area of 242 sq km.

The Union Ministry of Mines initiated the tendering process in November 2024, and the winning bidder is expected to be announced by March 27.

Consequent to the protest, all businesses, from the ordinary fish vendors to the fish stalls in the markets in the state, did not open on Thursday. The shutdown began from Wednesday midnight.

Likewise, neither the small nor the big fishing boats have ventured into the sea.

Led by former veteran Congress parliamentarian T.N. Prathapan and CPI(M) legislator P.P. Chitharanjan, the statewide protest has turned out to be a success, as the fishing sector and others are participating in protest meetings.

The Latin Church and its members have also expressed their solidarity and are taking part in the protest.

Kerala’s fishing industry directly employs around 2.5 lakh people, with another 15 lakh relying on it indirectly.

The state has approximately 4,000 trawlers and over 25,000 other fishing vessels.

With the 24-hour shutdown turning out to be a success, this is going to give greater impetus to the upcoming Parliament march scheduled for March 12.

Even though both the traditional political rivals are jointly staging this protest, a statewide coastal rally was flagged off by Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan being organised by the Revolutionary Socialist Party — an ally of the Congress-led UDF.

Former State Minister and the state secretary of RSP Shibhu Baby John, who was leading the rally, said that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was playing a double game.

“On the outside, the Left government says they are against sea sand mining, but the Centre, which went ahead with this, has the silent support of the Vijayan government,” said John.

Telangana Assembly passes resolution for Bharat Ratna to Manmohan Singh (Ld)

Hyderabad, Dec 30 (IANS) The Telangana Assembly on Monday unanimously resolved to recommend Bharat Ratna for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who passed away recently.

A resolution moved by Chief Minister A. Revant Reddy was unanimously adopted by the Assembly to confer India’s highest civilian honour on Dr. Manmohan Singh,

The special session of the Assembly paid tributes to the former Prime Minister, expressing condolences over his demise and acknowledging his invaluable contributions to the nation’s progress and the formation of the state of Telangana.

The Assembly approved a proposal to install a statue of Dr. Manmohan Singh in Hyderabad to commemorate him as a great leader who fulfilled the 60-year aspirations of the Telangana people.

The Assembly expressed deep condolences to Dr. Manmohan Singh’s family, recognizing him as an internationally acclaimed economist who served the country in various capacities, including Chief Economic Advisor, RBI Governor, Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission, Finance Minister, and Prime Minister. It noted that his tenure as Finance Minister (1991–1996) marked a turning point in India’s economic history, with key reforms in liberalisation, privatisation, and globalisation.

As Prime Minister (2004–2014), he initiated transformative social programs such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the Right to Information Act, the National Rural Health Mission, and the Aadhaar program. He introduced significant amendments to the Land Acquisition Act in 2013 to protect displaced individuals and revised the Forest Rights Act in 2006 to support tribal communities.

The Assembly also took note of the fact that Dr. Manmohan Singh was instrumental in the creation of Telangana state. During his tenure as Prime Minister, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014 was passed in Parliament, fulfilling a decades-long aspiration of the people.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said that Telangana owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Manmohan Singh for his pivotal role in the state’s formation.

He highlighted the late former Prime Minister’s vision and leadership in elevating India’s global stature, emphasising the importance of honoring him as a guiding figure for future generations.

Members cutting across party lines paid rich tributes to Manmohan Singh and recalled his close association with Telangana.

Main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) fully supported the demand for conferring Bharat Ratna on Manmohan Singh. BRS leader K.T. Rama Rao said they believe that the late leader deserves the highest honour.

The Chief Minister also suggested that a statue of the late Prime Minister be installed in the Financial District in Hyderabad to honour his memory and in recognition of the close association he had with Telangana.

The Chief Minister said installing the statue at a prominent place will enable people to pay tributes to the late leader on his birth and death anniversaries and take inspiration from him.

Terming Manmohan Singh’s demise a great loss for the country, Revanth Reddy said his services to the country can never be forgotten.

Revanth Reddy recalled that it was at Mahabubnagar that, as the Prime Minister, he had launched Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for 100 days of assured employment in a year.

KTR recalled that when the son of Telangana P.V. Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister, he brought Manmohan Singh into the government through lateral entry. Manmohan Singh, who had served in the Reserve Bank of India, was made the finance minister.

Terming the late leader a great economist, the BRS leader said in his very first Budget speech in 1991, Manmohan Singh had stated that the entire world would hear about India.

The BRS leader said Manmohan Singh was another name for simple living-high thinking.

Stating that loyalty and commitment are rare in today’s politics, KTR said Manmohan Singh was a great leader who remained loyal to Congress, which had given him an opportunity.

Ministers, members of Congress and members of BRS, BJP, AIMIM and CPI also paid tributes to Manmohan Singh.

Mahakumbh 2025: Yogi Adityanath extends invitations to prominent leaders

New Delhi, Dec 28 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday met prominent leaders in the national capital to invite them to the grand Mahakumbh 2025, set to take place in Prayagraj, an official said.

Among those the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister met were former President Ram Nath Kovind, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President J.P. Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Mizoram Governor Gen (retd) V.K. Singh.

A statement mentioned that Adityanath presented each dignitary with an official invitation along with symbolic gifts.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister was in Delhi on Saturday to invite these dignitaries for the Mahakumbh to be held from January 13 to February 26, 2025.

His first meeting was with Mizoram Governor Gen (retd) V.K. Singh at Uttar Pradesh Bhawan, where he extended the invitation.

Following this, Adityanath met former President Ram Nath Kovind at his official residence to invite him to the grand event.

He then visited the official residences of Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President J.P. Nadda and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to extend the invitation.

“Today I had a courtesy meeting with Union Minister of Home and Cooperation, Amit Shah ji in New Delhi. Thank you very much for providing your valuable time!” the Uttar Pradesh CM later wrote on X.

After meeting J.P. Nadda, CM Adityanath posted on X: “Today I had a courtesy meeting with National President of BJP and Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda ji in New Delhi. Thank you very much for providing your valuable time!”

As part of the courtesy meetings, the Uttar Pradesh CM presented each dignitary with symbolic gifts, including a logo of Mahakumbh 2025, a Kalash (sacred urn), literature about the event, and a New Year desk calendar and diary, the statement read.

On his social media platform, Yogi Adityanath also shared pictures of these meetings and expressed gratitude to the dignitaries for their valuable time.

With just 15 days until Mahakumbh begins, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath is intensifying efforts to invite distinguished personalities and the general public from across states.

As part of this initiative, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s visit to Delhi aimed to encourage widespread participation in the grand event, the statement mentioned.
