Gujarat-based Rashtriya Raksha University keen to enrol aspirants from Manipur

Imphal, April 22 (IANS) Gujarat’s Gandhinagar-based Rashtriya Raksha University has taken steps to expand its academic outreach and boost enrolment among young aspirants from Manipur, officials said on Tuesday.

A team of officials led by Rashtriya Raksha University’s in-charge Director Avinash Kharel on Tuesday met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal and discussed the varsity’s outreach and academic activities.

“During the meeting, the Director of the Rashtriya Raksha University briefed the Governor on the university’s efforts to expand academic outreach and boost enrolment among young aspirants from Manipur,” a Raj Bhavan official said.

He said that the university offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in three main areas of study. These include Police Science and Management, Disaster Management and National Security, and Security and Strategic Studies.

According to the official, the varsity, an institute of national importance under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), also provides specialised courses in Cyber Security, Forensic Science, and Language Studies.

The varsity’s team highlighted the institution’s mission and its growing role in nation-building through education in security and policing.

The Governor appreciated their efforts and urged continued focus on inclusive student engagement from Manipur, the official stated.

Meanwhile, the Governor felicitated National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets who participated in this year’s Republic Day Parade in New Delhi.

In a meeting held at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday, Bhalla presented laptops to T. Bobby Singh, Associate NCC Officer, Y Umesh, Senior Under Officer, and Oinam Reena Devi, Senior Under Officer, as a token of appreciation for their exemplary dedication, discipline, and service.

Praising their achievements, the Governor expressed confidence in their potential as future leaders and responsible citizens. The cadets conveyed their sincere gratitude for the recognition.

The Governor commended their commitment and reaffirmed his dedication to youth empowerment, disciplined, responsible, and civic-minded citizens, acknowledging the vital role of young citizens in the state’s progress and security.

Kolkata, Jan 8 (IANS) Hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claim of success of the state’s own health insurance scheme “Bangla Shasya Bima”, and said that the state government is currently releasing Rs 350 crore directly into the bank accounts of 9 lakh farmers, the leader of the opposition in West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari refuted claims by submitting some statistics.

He also criticised West Bengal for opting out of a similar scheme from the Union government, which was active in West Bengal for three years of 2016, 2017 and 2018.

“Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY); Modi Govt’s flagship Crop Insurance Scheme was implemented in West Bengal for 3 years from 2016 till 2018. In these 3 years a total of 135 lakh applications of insured farmers had been covered under the scheme. For the same period a total of Rs 637 crore was released by government of India towards premium subsidy. Against a farmer’s share of premium of Rs 305 crores, a total claim of Rs 1,218 crores was released to farmers of West Bengal under the scheme,” Adhikari claimed in a statement made on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday night.

Thereafter, criticising the decision of the state government to opt out of central scheme after 2019, the leader of the opposition claimed that the state’s own scheme could not prevent farmer’s suicide during the period since the state government opted out of the central scheme.

“The end result is that we witness cases of farmer suicides in West Bengal, especially when they are distressed after loss of crops due to untimely rain, storms and other weather and irrigation related issues. If WB’s crop insurance scheme is so effective, why has it failed to prevent farmer suicides in the state?” Adhikari’s statement read.

B’luru molestation case: Karnataka Police arrest accused in Kerala village

Bengaluru, April 14 (IANS) Karnataka Police have arrested the accused in the sensational molestation case involving two women in Bengaluru, sources confirmed on Monday, adding that the man was nabbed in a Kerala village.

A video of the accused molesting two women in a residential locality during the early hours had gone viral, raising concerns over women’s safety in the city.

The arrested individual has been identified as 26-year-old Santosh Daniel. The Sadduguntepalya Police apprehended him in a village in the neighbouring state of Kerala.

The accused had taken shelter at a friend’s place without disclosing anything about the incident. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

According to the police, they examined over 1,600 CCTV footage clips to track down the accused after the incident came to light. Two special teams were formed, and based on technical leads, they searched for him in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

After the incident surfaced, the accused switched off his mobile phone and fled. He travelled to Hosur and Krishnagiri before reaching Kerala. He later contacted a friend with whom he had previously worked in Bengaluru, police said.

The investigation began based on a complaint filed by a resident, Lokesh Gowda. Police managed to identify the accused’s bike registration number, tracked his address in Bengaluru, and launched a manhunt.

Police sources revealed that the accused was unemployed and appears to be a habitual offender.

A video showing two young women being targeted by a man in the early hours in a residential locality went viral on social media.

The 17-second video showed two women walking down a deserted street flanked by houses on both sides. A tall, well-built man approaches them from behind, pushes one of the women aside, sexually harasses the other, and then escapes. The video also captures the visibly shaken women standing briefly to catch their breath before quickly leaving the scene.

The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on April 4 in the jurisdiction of the Sadduguntepalya police station. The video went viral on Sunday. Police registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by a local resident and launched a search for the accused while collecting additional evidence.

Residents of the area expressed shock over the incident, stating that such occurrences were unprecedented in their locality. They added that with the rise in PG accommodations in the area, the police must intensify night patrolling to ensure safety.

Reacting to the rise in incidents of sexual assaults and harassment in Bengaluru during night hours, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara had stated that “such incidents happen here and there in a big city”. The statement stirred a huge controversy. After the backlash, he expressed regrets over his remarks.

Delhi Police organises drug awareness campaign during 78th Raising Day celebrations

New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) The Delhi Police is celebrating its 78th Raising Day with a series of welfare initiatives, including drug awareness campaigns, blood donation drives, health camps, and walkathons.

The celebrations, which began on February 16, will conclude on February 22, marking a week-long effort to promote health and well-being among Delhi Police personnel and the public.

As part of the celebrations, the Welfare Vertical of Delhi Police has organised multiple programmes in collaboration with institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), RBL Bank, and various NGOs.

These initiatives include blood donation camps, health check-up drives, and stress management sessions aimed at supporting the physical and mental well-being of police personnel.

A key highlight of the Raising Day events is the drug-free campaign held at India Gate, where prominent sports personalities joined hands with Delhi Police to spread awareness about drug abuse.

Sarita Mor, Arjuna Awardee and wrestling champion, expressed her enthusiasm and told IANS, “We have gathered at India Gate under the drug-free campaign. I am delighted because, while we bring glory to our country through sports, it is even more fulfilling to contribute beyond sports and make a difference in society.”

Ravi Dahiya, Olympic silver medalist, also voiced his support for the cause.

“Keeping people away from drugs is crucial, and I am proud to be part of this campaign. I was also present in previous programmes. I urge everyone to stay away from drugs as much as possible,” he told IANS.

Echoing similar sentiments, Sanjay Bhardwaj, Dronacharya Awardee and renowned cricket coach, told IANS, “Drugs are a pathway towards destruction today. We need to save the youth from drugs, and the Delhi Police has taken an important initiative in this regard. I urge everyone to stay away from drugs.”

Additionally, a blood donation camp was organised under the slogan ‘Rakt Daan Maha Daan’ in collaboration with AIIMS, where 123 officials and staff members voluntarily donated blood for the noble cause. Health check-up camps and stress management sessions were also conducted as part of the welfare initiatives.

The Delhi Police Raising Day celebrations continue to reinforce the commitment of law enforcement towards public welfare, spreading awareness, and fostering a healthier society.
