Pawan Kalyan pays homage to Andhra techie killed in Pahalgam terror attack

Amaravati, April 24 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Thursday paid homage to Somishetty Madhusudhan Rao, one of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Pawan Kalyan reached Kavali town in Nellore district and laid a wreath on the mortal remains of the software engineer.

The Jana Sena leader paid tributes to the terror victim and consoled his family members.

The actor-politician was accompanied by ministers Nadendla Manohar, Anam Ramnarayan Reddy and Sathya Kumar.

Talking to the media persons Pawan Kalyan strongly condemned the terror attack. He said Madhusudhan was brutally killed in front of his wife and minor children.

The Deputy Chief Minister called for eliminating terrorists wherever they are. He earlier posted on social media that the horrific Pahalgam attack has deeply shaken us.

“My heart goes out to the bereaved families. As a mark of respect & solidarity, JanaSena will observe three days of mourning across the Telugu States. Our party flag will fly at half-mast. In this dark hour, we remain resolute. Our Bharat’s unity cannot be broken by terror. I have full faith that our leadership will respond with strength and purpose to ensure justice prevails and such atrocities never occur again. Together, we will overcome. Together, we will heal,” he said.

Earlier, the mortal remains of Madhusudhan reached his hometown, Kavali. The 42-year-old software engineer, who was living in Bengaluru, was among 26 tourists killed in the terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Tuesday.

Madhusudhan’s body reached Chennai Airport on Wednesday night and was then brought to Kavali by road.

Tirupal and Padmvathi were shocked to see their son’s body.

The relatives had not informed them about their death. They were told that he was injured in the attack. Madhusudan Rao was the only son of Tirupal and Padmavathi, who are engaged banana business in the town.

He was settled in Bengaluru for the last 12 years. The techie was on a trip to Kashmir with his wife Kamakshi, daughter and son.

Madhusudhan was one of the two men from Andhra Pradesh killed in the terror attack. J.S. Chandramouli, a retired bank employee from Visakhapatnam, also fell to the bullets of the terrorists.

Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday night received the mortal remains of Chandramouli at Visakhapatnam Airport.

The Chief Minister offered floral tributes and consoled the bereaved family. Reaffirming the state’s commitment to national security, Naidu announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the two martyrs from Andhra Pradesh – Chandramouli and IT professional Madhusudan from Kavali.

27-year-old, who survived landslide, trampled to death in Wayanad

Wayanad, Feb 12 (IANS) For the second day in succession, the man-animal conflict has taken the life of a tribal man near Meppadi near here.

Since Tuesday night, 25-year-old Balan has been missing and his body was found in the morning.

The place where the incident took place is near the area in the district where 254 people were killed in landslide in July 2024.

A local resident Balakrishnan said Balan was returning from the shop but he took a different route.

“This morning, I went to his place to call him for work and was told that he was missing. Soon we started a search for him and we saw his body which was completely smashed and the head portion damaged,” said Balakrishnan.

“The body has now been covered and is lying at the same place where it was found. We are waiting for the officials to arrive, while the locals are up in arms against the inaction of the officials,” added Balakrishnan.

Nousha Marikar, the Wayanad District Panchayat President, said the officials’ apathy continues and lives are lost.

“We strongly feel that had the officials acted on time by undertaking a patrol, things could have been better. This incident took place a few kilometres from the forest station. There are no street lights as this area is known to be wild elephant-infested area,” said Marikar.

The incident happened 24 hours after 45-year-old Manu was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Sulthan Bathery in the district.

The man-animal conflict has gripped the hilly district of Wayanad. On January 24, a woman, who was going to pluck coffee beans, was killed by a tiger.

Balan’s death is the 10th one in the past decade in Wayanad and the second one in two days.

Wayanad borders Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states and is surrounded by deep dense forests and is home to tigers, wild elephants and wild boars which have left the people especially those living near the forest areas in perennial fear.

Annamalai flays TN govt for opposing Centre’s trilingual education policy

Chennai, Feb 16 (IANS) Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai on Sunday strongly criticised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the state government for opposing the Union government’s trilingual education policy.

His remarks came in response to Stalin’s recent criticism of the policy and his direct challenge to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In a social media post, Annamalai questioned the rationale behind the DMK-led government’s opposition, highlighting the fact that private schools, including those affiliated with the CBSE and even some run by the DMK, follow a trilingual curriculum consisting of Tamil, English, and a third Indian language.

“If private schools, where the children and grandchildren of Tamil Nadu ministers, including the Chief Minister, study can teach trilingualism, why can’t government schools, where our children study, do the same?” Annamalai asked.

The BJP leader further questioned whether Stalin was implying that learning multiple languages should be a privilege reserved only for those who can afford private education. He emphasised the growing need for multilingual proficiency in today’s fast-paced world.

“It’s 2025, and the world is evolving rapidly. Why impose an outdated policy from the 1960s on Tamil Nadu’s children?” he said, referring to Stalin’s earlier statements against the policy.

Earlier in the day, Stalin had taken to social media to challenge Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, asking: “Can the Education Minister clarify which section of the Indian Constitution makes the trilingual policy a legal requirement?” His remarks were in response to Pradhan’s accusation that the Tamil Nadu government was politicising its stance on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Stalin asserted that education is a subject on the Concurrent List of the Indian Constitution, meaning both the Union and state governments share authority over it. He argued that the Union government cannot claim exclusive control over education policies and reiterated the importance of federalism in governance.

“India is a union of states, and education falls within the Concurrent List. The Union government cannot impose its decisions unilaterally,” Stalin stated. The Chief Minister also condemned what he described as “political blackmail” by the central government, referring to reports suggesting that Tamil Nadu might face financial repercussions if it refused to adopt the trilingual policy.

“Tamils will not tolerate such audacity. To suggest that funds will be withheld unless Tamil Nadu accepts the trilingual policy is outright intimidation,” he said. Stalin reiterated that Tamil Nadu is not seeking any special concessions but is merely asserting its constitutional rights.

He warned that any attempt by the Union government to impose policies against the state would be met with strong resistance.

New Maharashtra Archives Building to be constructed at Mumbai’s Bandra East

Mumbai, March 21 (IANS) The Maharashtra government will construct a new “Maha Archives Building” on a 6,691 sqm plot in Mumbai’s Bandra East, the Assembly was informed on Friday.

“To ensure the safekeeping of this invaluable national treasure, the new Maha Archives Building will be constructed at the Directorate’s Bandra (East) 6,691 square metre premises. The state-of-the-art facility will feature temperature and humidity-controlled archival chambers, an independent restoration section, a reprography division, a modern research centre for historians from India and abroad and a dedicated exhibition gallery,” Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar told the house.

Shelar emphasised the vital role of the Directorate of Archives, which operates under the Cultural Affairs Department.

Established in 1821, the Directorate is headquartered in Mumbai and houses approximately 10.5 crore (105 million) historical documents out of a total of 17.5 crore (175 million) preserved by the department. Since 1889, these valuable records have been maintained at Sir Cowasji Jehangir Readymoney Building, Elphinstone College. However, with time, the need for modern preservation techniques and increased storage capacity has grown. Limited space poses challenges in adopting advanced conservation methods and accepting additional historical records, said the minister.

The minister, on March 18, had announced that Maharashtra will soon witness the establishment of a Grand State Cultural Centre and State Museum in Mumbai.

“Maharashtra has a glorious cultural legacy and it is the duty of the state government to preserve and nurture it. In line with this vision, a State Cultural Centre and State Museum will be set up in the state’s capital – Mumbai. The cultural centre will feature a grand auditorium, dedicated art galleries and a research centre, making it a crucial link for national and international cultural collaborations. It will not only attract domestic and foreign tourists but will also provide a prestigious stage for artists from across the globe,” he said.

“The State Museum will play a pivotal role in safeguarding Maharashtra’s ancient treasures, including artefacts unearthed through archaeological excavations, rare paintings, historical relics, sculptures, inscriptions, ancient manuscripts, traditional textiles, and weaponry. By preserving these invaluable pieces of history, the museum will serve as a bridge connecting future generations to the rich legacy of Maharashtra,” he said.
