Operation Sindhu: First flight carrying 110 citizens thank Modi govt, Indian embassies on safe evacuation from Iran

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) After arriving safely in New Delhi on Thursday, all the 110 Indian citizens rescued from Iran by flight, thanked the Narendra Modi-led Union government as well as the Indian embassies in Iran and Armenia for evacuating them amid the escalating military conflict in the Middle East.

As part of Operation Sindhu, the first flight carrying 110 Indian citizens arrived in New Delhi after being successfully evacuated from Iran.

All the Indian nationals were flown to Delhi on IndiGo flight 6E 9487.

Union Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, welcomed the evacuated Indian citizens at the airport, IANS reported.

The flight carrying 110 Indian students from Urmia Medical University in Iran landed in New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport at Terminal-3.

After welcoming all 110 evacuated Indian citizens who arrived in New Delhi, Union MoS for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh told IANS, “We have planes ready. We’ll be sending another plane today. We are evacuating some more people from Turkmenistan. Today, another plane will be going and our missions have opened a 24-hour helpline for any requests for evacuation. As the situation evolves, we’ll be sending more planes and more chartered flights to evacuate all Indian nationals from Iran…”

Several Indian students spoke to IANS after being evacuated from Iran amid escalating military conflict between Iran and Israel.

Expressing his emotions after arriving in New Delhi, an evacuated student told IANS, “The situation was extremely dangerous and we were scared. We saw drones, injured people and the internet was down, nothing was working… But the Indian government came through, took us in, and brought us home safely. Salute to them, they took an unbelievable step and we’re truly proud. We are Indians, and India got us out safely…”

Thanking Indian Embassy in Iran and Armenia as well as the Narendra Modi government, another evacuated student told IANS, “The situation in Iran is very bad. Two days ago, it was a bit better, but now it’s much worse… We are extremely thankful to the Indian government for the way we were evacuated and treated. I’m truly grateful to the Indian Embassy and the Indian government.”

Another evacuated student told IANS, “The situation there (in Iran) is definitely bad… the Indian Embassies in Iran and Armenia provided us with everything and prioritised our evacuation, bringing us back to India first..”

India has launched ‘Operation Sindhu’ to evacuate its nationals from Iran amid escalating regional tensions.

The first batch of 110 Indian citizens, including 90 students from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, arrived in New Delhi in the early hours of Thursday.

The evacuation was conducted via Armenia, with the students travelling by road to the Armenian capital, Yerevan, under the supervision of Indian missions in Iran and Armenia.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Wednesday evening that Indian students residing in Tehran were safely evacuated from the city through coordination by the Indian Embassy.

“Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for safety reasons through arrangements made by the Indian Embassy,” the Ministry said in their official statement.

The Indian students left Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan, Armenia, via a special flight at 14:55 IST on June 18, with their expected arrival in New Delhi during the early hours of June 19.

MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced through Twitter, “Operation Sindhu begins. India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran. India evacuated 110 students from northern Iran who crossed into Armenia under the supervision of our Missions in Iran and Armenia on June 17.

This is part of the many steps that the Indian government has taken over the last several days for the safety and security of Indian nationals stuck in Iran and called for help in view of the deteriorating situation due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The Indian government said that it is grateful to the governments of Iran and Armenia for the smooth facilitation of the evacuation process.

“India accords highest priority to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad. As part of the ongoing operation, the Indian Embassy in Iran has been assisting large numbers of Indian nationals in moving from areas seeing increased hostilities to relatively safer areas within the country and to subsequently evacuate them using the available and feasible options,” the MEA said.

The MEA advised Indian nationals in Iran to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Tehran through its emergency helpline, and with the 24×7 Control Room established by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

The Delhi BJP President accused Kejriwal of hypocrisy, stating, “A person who questions the existence of Lord Ram can never be a true proponent of Hindu nationalism. He represents lies, deceit, and manipulation.”

While bidding farewell to 2024, Sachdeva stated that Delhiites too have decided to oust an opportunistic ‘electoral Hindu’ from the power corridor of Delhi.

Playing nine video clips of Kejriwal, the BJP demonstrated instances where he insulted Lord Ram, desecrated the Swastika, mocked deities, and disrespected Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan. The two-and-a-half-minute video displays the vile mindset of Kejriwal and his team.

As elections draw closer, Kejriwal suddenly remembers temple priests, said Sachdeva, adding, “But Delhi residents understand that Kejriwal represents lies.”

Comparing Kejriwal’s behaviour to a scene in the film ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, Sachdeva said, “In the movie, one character runs from water. Similarly, mention water in front of Kejriwal, and he shirks moral responsibilities, as he remembers how 21,000 people died from drinking contaminated water in 2023-24, along with 62 deaths due to waterlogging.”

The BJP President further stated, “Kejriwal has repeatedly dishonoured the Hindu community, glorified anti-national elements, and is not only an enemy of Sanatan Dharma but also of the nation’s security. Expecting Delhi’s prosperity under him is futile.”

Referring to Kejriwal’s announced visit to Connaught Place Hanuman Mandir which didn’t happen, Sachdeva claimed that upon learning of priests’ protests there, Kejriwal discreetly went to another Hanuman temple, which he had previously ignored.

Prez Rule in Manipur will pave way for due political settlements: Apex tribal body

Imphal, Feb 15 (IANS) Reiterating its support to the President’s Rule in Manipur, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), an apex body of Kuki-Zo tribals in the state, on Saturday, expressed confidence that it would pave the way for due political settlements.

The KZC, a conglomerate of Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) and several other organisations of Kuki-Zo tribal communities, said that the Council receives positively the government’s declaration of the President’s Rule in the state. “We are hopeful it (President’s Rule) would pave the way for due political settlements and peaceful coexistence (of Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar tribals) as a good neighbour,” KZC Secretary (Information) Khaikhohauh Gangte said.

Reacting to the comments of BJP’s northeast in-charge Sambit Patra to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur, the KZC claimed: “Patra may be unaware or has chosen not to be aware that Meitei physically violated Manipur’s territorial integrity on May 3, 2023, when they massacred, attacked church buildings, destroyed the homes, and forcefully displaced the Kuki-Zo people from the Imphal valley.”

The KZC alleged in a statement that N. Biren Singh-led (former Chief Minister) ethnic cleansing has separated Kuki-Zo and Meitei demographically and physically. “Kuki-Zo are not separatists, Meiteis have separated Kuki-Zo from Manipur. More than 250 Kuki-Zo people have died in this ethnic conflict, over 7000 Kuki-Zo homes have been destroyed, more than 360 places of worship have been set on fire or destroyed, and more than 40,000 Kuki-Zo people have become homeless,” the apex tribal body claimed.

Patra on Friday said in Imphal that after the imposition of the President’s Rule, the “60-member state Assembly was put under suspended animation” meaning that the state Assembly can be revived on a future date as and when the President of India deems fit. “The BJP governments are committed to continue the peace efforts in the state and to maintain the territorial integrity of Manipur. There would be no compromise on the territorial integrity of the state. Illegal infiltration into Manipur would not be allowed in any circumstances and such attempts would be dealt with severely,” Patra had told the media.

After the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, hectic parleys took place to choose an alternate leader of the ruling BJP legislature party who would be the Chief Minister of the new government. Since February 9, Patra, a Lok Sabha member from Puri (Odisha) held a series of meetings with the Ministers, MLAs and leaders of BJP and other party allies to take their views. The BJP MP also held several meetings with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan and discussed the prevailing political situation in the trouble-torn state.

“As we could not finalise a consensus name for the leader of the legislature party who could be the next Chief Minister after Biren Singh’s resignation, the Governor recommended to the President to impose the President’s Rule in the state,” another senior BJP leader said. He said: “There are three factions among the Ministers and MLAs proposing different names for the CM’s post.”

He said that last week, the Central BJP leaders separately called Biren Singh, ministers, a few leaders and MLAs to Delhi, and discussed the political and ethnic situation in Manipur.

BJP sources said that state Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, Municipal Administrations, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Rajya Member from Manipur Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba are the frontrunners for the Chief Minister’s post.

The BJP is trying to choose a leader who will be acceptable both among tribals – Kuki-Zo-Hmar and Naga and the majority non-tribal Meitei communities. Non-tribal Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley while Nagas and Kuki-Zo-Hmar constitute little over 40 per cent and reside in the hill districts.

K’taka police dept’s morality undermined under Cong govt: Bommai

Bengaluru, Dec 25 (IANS) Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai said on Wednesday that the present Congress-led state government has completely undermined the moral integrity of the police department.

Speaking to reporters, former CM Bommai also alleged that senior police officials are behaving like constables.

Those who work legally and fairly are being punished, he alleged.

“Policemen should uphold the law, but the Congress wants officers who are loyal to them. This has led to a division in the police department based on party affiliations,” he said.

“Punishing officers in uniform is demoralising them. This system must be corrected immediately, or it will lead to major problems in the future,” he underlined.

Former CM Bommai also accused the Congress of shifting from its pre-independence nationalist stance to becoming “anti-people” and “anti-nation” today.

Asked about Congress’s centenary celebrations of the 1924 Belagavi Congress session presided over by Mahatma Gandhi, he told reporters that the Congress of today is anti-people and anti-nation.

Asked about the incident where eggs were thrown at BJP MLA N. Munirathna Naidu in Bengaluru, the BJP MP said the Congress’ misgovernance has crossed all limits.

“If they lack even the basic understanding that one should not take the law into their own hands, what is the point of celebrating a centenary?” Bommai added.

Asked about an incident in Kalaburagi where a woman was electrocuted on the road, the former CM said: “This government has not just delivered an electric shock but many shocks to the people. For instance, expired medicines supplied by blacklisted companies were given to pregnant mothers, which is shocking. This shows that ordinary citizens are not safe under this government. Whether it’s law and order, roads, drinking water, health, or electricity, people are not safe in any sector.”

Regarding Congress’ opposition to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement about the Constitution’s architect B.R. Ambedkar, Bommai said: “Congress has been exposed in Parliament regarding Ambedkar. To cover it up, they are staging such dramas. The Congress government had suspended the police inspector posted with the Khanapur police station in Belagavi for letting the BJP leaders inside the police station during the arrest of BJP MLC C.T. Ravi.”

BJP MLC Ravi was arrested on charges of issuing derogatory remarks against State Women and Child Welfare Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar in the Legislative Council.

The BJP has alleged police high-handedness in the incident.
