RCA cancels elections in new dists, pushes ahead with Chomp Stadium project

Jaipur, Sep 5 (IANS) The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) was held on Friday at SMS Stadium, where several major decisions were taken regarding the future of cricket in the state.

Convenor of the Adhoc Committee, D.D. Kumawat, informed that for the first time in two years, representatives from cricket associations of all 33 districts came together on a common platform.

One of the key announcements was to expedite the construction of the new international-standard cricket stadium at Chomp, Jaipur.

At the same time, the AGM decided to cancel elections held in the newly created districts as well as all decisions made by previous Adhoc and other committees.

The Adhoc Committee also declared that stadiums will be developed at all 33 district cricket centers of Rajasthan.

“This step will ensure that budding cricketers across the state get access to world-class facilities, enabling them to train and showcase their talent on proper sporting grounds,” said Kumawat.

For this purpose, a committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Adhoc Committee member Ashish Tiwari.

During the meeting, tributes were paid to Rajasthan’s late international Test players Hanumant Singh, Parthasarathi Sharma, and Salim Durrani.

Former administrators who made significant contributions to BCCI and Rajasthan cricket — including Maharana Bhagwat Singh, P.M. Rungta, Raj Singh Dungarpur, Kamal Morarji, Kishan Rungta, Manvendra Singh, Rajendra Singh Rathore, Ashok Ohri, and Rakesh Agarwal — were also remembered.

The Adhoc Committee emphasised that all financial irregularities that have come to light in Rajasthan cricket will be investigated impartially.

It also stated that preparations will begin soon to conduct fresh elections of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, starting with elections in the districts. With these decisions, the RCA has set the stage for structural reforms, infrastructure development, and a renewed focus on strengthening cricket at the grassroots level across the state.

Illicit liquor valued at Rs 6.89 lakh seized; one arrested in Gujarat’s Vadodara

Vadodara, Feb 19 (IANS) Illicit liquor valued at Rs 6.89 lakh was seized in the Bapod police station area in Gujarat’s Vadodara, officials said on Wednesday.

During the operation, one accused was arrested, while two others, including a suspect from Rajasthan and an unknown container driver, were declared wanted, the officials added.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a warehouse opposite Marutidham Society and found an illegal liquor stockpile.

The premises were linked to Suvalal Panchal, a repeat offender previously arrested for similar prohibition violations.

Panchal, a resident of Jivan Nagar, Waghodia Road, Vadodara, was arrested.

The raid led to the seizure of foreign liquor, mobile phones, and cash, amounting to a total seizure of approximately Rs 7 lakh.

While Panchal was arrested, searches were underway to arrest the other two accused.

Despite Gujarat’s prohibition of alcohol since 1948, the state continues to grapple with significant challenges related to illegal liquor activities.

In the first half of 2024, the State Monitoring Cell (SMC) conducted 224 raids across various districts and cities, achieving 180 successful operations.

These efforts led to the seizure of approximately Rs 11.5 crore worth of liquor and an additional Rs 26 crore in illegal goods.

Notably, Ahmedabad reported the highest number of prohibition cases among the state’s four police commissionerates, with 17 cases, followed by Surat with 13, Vadodara with five, and none in Rajkot.

This trend mirrors data from 2023, where Ahmedabad accounted for 37 out of 83 liquor-related cases registered by the SMC. Comparatively, in 2021, the SMC conducted 148 successful raids throughout the year, seizing Rs 13.64 crore worth of liquor and Rs 6.90 crore in illegal goods. The increase in enforcement activities over the years underscores the ongoing efforts to combat illicit liquor operations in the state.

Rajasthan CM orders MLA to inspect rain-hit areas; promises long-term flood solutions

Jaipur, Sep 4 (IANS) With heavy rains wreaking havoc across Rajasthan, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Thursday issued special instructions to legislators and ministers to step up relief efforts and ensure quick resolution of public grievances.

Speaking in the Assembly on the crisis, the CM directed all MLAs to conduct three-day intensive inspections of their constituencies between 5th and 7th September. He further instructed ministers in charge and secretaries to spend at least two days in rain-affected districts to personally monitor relief operations.

“The state government stands shoulder to shoulder with the people in every situation. Our priority is to address their problems with sensitivity and promptness,” Sharma said, adding that while immediate relief was being provided, a long-term strategy would also be devised to permanently tackle recurring issues of flooding and waterlogging.

The CM noted that Rajasthan has received 56 per cent more rainfall than average between June 1 and September 1, leading to widespread flooding in low-lying regions. He urged MLAs to coordinate with the district administration to accelerate rescue operations, relocation of affected families, and distribution of essential supplies.

Sharma emphasised that MLAs and ministers must maintain constant communication with officials, hold regular review meetings with district collectors, and personally ensure the availability of food packets, drinking water, medicines, and clothing.

He directed that safe temporary shelters be arranged for women, children, the elderly, and differently-abled persons, and called for the continuous monitoring of control rooms and helplines.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of public communication.

He urged legislators to regularly share updates with media and citizens, dispel rumours, and actively use social media to spread helpline numbers and information about relief measures.

Health and sanitation were flagged as top priorities, with Sharma instructing deployment of medical teams in relief camps, vaccination of animals, and chlorination of drinking water sources.

He stressed awareness campaigns on food hygiene, safe drinking water, and avoiding contaminated water to prevent disease outbreaks.

“Beyond relief, we will prepare long-term flood management plans to give people a permanent solution,” Sharma assured.

Three Khalistani terrorists who bombed Punjab Police posts killed in encounter in UP

Pilibhit (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 23 (IANS) Three criminals accused of hurling a grenade at police posts in Punjab’s Gurdaspur were killed in an encounter with police in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit early Monday morning, a senior police officer said.

Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav, while sharing details on social media platform X, stated, “In a major breakthrough against a Pak-sponsored Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) terror module, a joint operation by UP Police and Punjab Police led to an encounter with three module members who fired at the police party. This terror module is involved in grenade attacks at police establishments in border areas of Punjab.”

He said that the three suspects were involved in the grenade attack on a police post in Gurdaspur.

Pilibhit Superintendent of Police (SP) Avinash Pandey reported that the gunfight occurred in the Puranpur police station area between the suspected Khalistani terrorists and a joint team of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh Police.

The injured suspects, identified as Gurvinder Singh, Virendra Singh, and Jasanpreet Singh, sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities recovered two AK-series rifles, two Glock pistols, and a large quantity of ammunition from the scene.

“Early this morning, a team from Punjab Police informed Puranpur police station that suspects in a grenade attack on a police post by alleged Khalistani terrorists might be hiding in the area,” SP Pandey said.

Upon receiving this information, police teams immediately launched a blockade and searched the area. They later received a tip-off about three suspicious young men on a motorcycle, riding dangerously and carrying potentially harmful items, heading toward Pilibhit.

“Both Punjab Police and Puranpur police station staff chased the suspects. Meanwhile, Gajrola and Madhav Thanda police stations were alerted about possible escape routes. At a canal track near an under-construction bridge, the suspects opened fire when challenged by the police. In the retaliatory firing, all three were injured and subsequently sent to CSC Puranpur for treatment,” Pandey said.

However, they later succumbed to the injuries.

Recently, multiple explosions targeted police posts in Gurdaspur. On Thursday, a grenade was hurled at the closed Bakshiwal police post.

A day later, another explosion occurred at the closed Wadala Bangar police post, which had also recently shut down due to staff shortages.

Residents in nearby areas reported being shaken by the blasts. At Wadala Bangar, frightened locals emerged from their homes at night only to discover the sound originated from the police station. Following the explosion, police vehicles patrolled the area throughout the night, with sirens blaring.
