Dharashiv, Sangli crowned winners at Maharashtra State Junior Kho Kho Championship

Ahilyanagar (Maharashtra), Dec 8 (IANS) Dharashiv and Sangli emerged as champions in the boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively, in the 51st Junior State Kho Kho Championship conducted by Maharashtra State Kho Kho Association (MSKKA) held in Ahilyanagar.

In all, 720 players from across 24 districts of Maharashtra participated in the four-day championship that concluded on Sunday. The format of the championship was league-cum-knockout, and 40 matches were played in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.

In the boys’ section, Solapur bagged the runners-up position with Sangli and Pune in joint third place. While in the girls’ category, Thane secured the runners-up position with Dharashiv and Solapur in joint-third position.

“The massive participation reflects the strong presence of Kho Kho in the state. The junior championship is a platform to identify and nurture future talents,” said Dr. Chandrajit Jadhav, General Secretary, Maharashtra Kho Kho Association.

The championship also recognised outstanding players, including Sotya Valvi as the Best Defender, Chandanshiv Shambhuraj as Best Attacker, and Vasave Jitendra as Best All-Rounder in the boys’ category. In the girls’ category, Tamkhade Shrawani was adjudged Best Defender, Jagdale Praniti as Best Attacker, and Chafe Sanika as Best All-Rounder.

Under the aegis of the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI), the event was organised by the Maharashtra Kho Kho Association, with the support of the Ahilyanagar District Kho Kho Association.

The 51st Junior State Kho Kho Championship served as a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and secure a spot in state teams for the 44th Junior National Kho Kho Championship (boys & girls) to be held in Karnataka from December 31, 2025, to January 4, 2026.

Thailand women make big gains in T20I rankings after Emerging Nations Trophy win

Dubai, Dec 2 (IANS) A host of Thailand players who excelled in the recent ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy have gained big in the latest ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings.

Thailand delivered an excellent performance on the final matchday to win the first-ever title on home soil, with young spinner Thipatcha Putthawong shining as she was named Bowler of the Tournament.

Putthawong took 15 wickets with an average of 5.33 over seven matches during the event. His performance earned him a rise of 13 places, moving up to 21st in the latest T20I bowling rankings.

Teammate and fellow spinner Suleeporn Laomi took 12 wickets and advanced 10 spots to rank 37th overall. Meanwhile, Scotland’s Olivia Bell moved up 17 positions to tie for 29th after claiming eight wickets in the tournament, highlighted by a magnificent five-wicket performance in the final match against Thailand.

The latest rankings for T20I batters tell a similar story, with a seasoned right-hander from Thailand emerging as the top contender following impressive performances at the Emerging Nations Trophy event.

Natthakan Chantham scored 160 runs throughout the tournament, making her the fifth-highest scorer among all players. As a result, she moved up one spot to become 33rd overall in the latest T20I batting rankings.

UAE’s Theertha Satish improved in T20I rankings, climbing four spots to 37th, while Esha Oza rose eight places to 38th. Meanwhile, stand-in Scotland captain Sarah Bryce gained five positions, reaching 39th, in recognition of her consistent performance at the tournament.

Oza was named Player of the Tournament in Thailand for scoring 187 runs and taking seven wickets. The 27-year-old significantly advanced in the latest T20I all-rounders rankings, climbing nine spots to reach 15th overall.

At the post-event awards ceremony that followed the final, Scotland’s Darcey Carter received the Batter of the Tournament trophy for scoring 248 runs, while Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong was named Bowler of the Tournament with 15 wickets.

IPL 2025: Ayush Mhatre, 17, makes smashing debut for CSK in Mumbai

Mumbai, April 20 (IANS) Youngsters making blockbuster debuts seem to be becoming a part of the script for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre got off to a sensational start in his first match in the world’s biggest T20 franchise league.

Handed a debut by Chennai Super Kings on his home ground, the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai youngster Mhatre blasted a 15-ball 32, coming in as a replacement for Rahul Tripathi.

A day after 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi started his IPL career with a six off the first delivery he faced playing for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants, Mhatre smashed two sixes and a four in the first five balls he faced.

Mhatre, another batting prodigy from the Mumbai maidans, literally travels far and wide for his cricket, daily making an 80-km commute one-way from the suburban Virar to South Mumbai to learn and play cricket.

Coming to bat in the fourth over after fellow youngster Ashwani Kumar had sent back Rachin Ravindra (5) off his first delivery, Mhatre survived a scare on the first ball he faced as he nearly chipped it to the mid-off fielder.

But he exploded into action on the second ball, getting off the mark with a four off a fullish cross-seam delivery outside off. The next ball was on the pads, and Mhatre used his wrist to dump it over the midwicket boundary. The next ball was pitched short, and Mhatre pulled him into the crowd for another six as he scored 17 runs off four balls in that over.

He struck three more fours to Chahar in the next two overs as CSK crossed 50 runs soon after the power-play. However, Chahar had the last laugh as he sent Mhatre back to the dugout, getting him to slice a slow leg-cutter off the toe end of his bat to Mitchell Santner at long-on.

Only Santner had some impact on him as the experienced New Zealand spinner kept Mhatre quiet in the only over he bowled to the Mumbai youngster. Mhatre scored 32 off 15 balls.

Mhatre, earlier this year, made a sensational debut in first-class cricket for Mumbai, scoring his maiden century in his third game. He also smashed 181 off 117 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to become the youngest to hit 150 or more in an innings.

Despite such performances, he went unsold in the 2025 IPL auction. But an injury to CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad opened up an opportunity, and the 17-year-old Mhatre grabbed it with both hands. He will now be hoping that he gets more opportunities in IPL 2025 and would love to make the most of those chances too.

Experts who have keenly watched the Mumbai Maidans and seen talents like Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prithvi Shaw blossom into brilliant batters have huge expectations from Mhatre. On Sunday, the 17-year-old proved that he has the courage and conviction to follow his dream.

Root comes back on top of Test batters rankings; Hosein new number one T20I bowler

Dubai, Dec 18 (IANS) England’s premier batter Joe Root has made a return as the top-ranked Test batter in the ICC Rankings. Root, who made scores of 32 and 54 during the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, replaces his compatriot Harry Brook, who spent just one week as number one in the standings.

As per the latest update to the rankings, Root is now at 895 rating points, which is 19 points above Brook, who was dismissed for just zero and one as New Zealand beat England by 423 runs.

New Zealand batter Kane Williamson’s scores of 44 and 156 helped him close the gap on the leading two while Tom Latham (up six places to 31st), Will Young (up 13 places to a career-best 36th), Tom Blundell (up three places to 37th) and Mitchell Santner (up 17 places to 76th) are other batter making jumps in the rankings.

New Zealand pacer Matt Henry’s dominance over Zak Crawley has been a highlight as he dismissed the England opener in all six innings of the series, and his latest six-wicket match haul has lifted him two places to a career-best seventh position in the bowlers rankings.

His team-mate Will O’Rourke continues the impressive start to his Test career and is currently in joint-30th place while England’s Gus Atkinson finished his first year in Test cricket at number 14. Santner, who was Player of the Match in New Zealand’s win at Hamilton, also attained a career-best 39th position with seven wickets in the Test.

Veteran pacer Tim Southee retires from Test cricket as 26th position holder among bowlers, while reaching a career-best ranking of third that he first attained in June 2021. He has also been a top 10 bowler in white-ball formats – achieving a career-high ninth position in ODIs and sixth in T20Is.

Meanwhile, in the T20I Rankings, West Indies’ left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein’s haul of 2-13 against Bangladesh in Kingstown has lifted him three places to being the new number one ranked bowler in the shortest format.

He replaces England’s Adil Rashid, who had been number one for a year – having taken over the top spot on December 14, 2023. Bangladesh spinner Mahedi Hasan has jumped a whopping 18 places to be at 23rd place in rankings for T20I bowlers.

South Africa batter Reeza Hendricks is back into the top 10 after notching a century against Pakistan in Centurion, and is at ninth place. West Indies’ Rovman Powell (up 10 spots to equal 22nd), his team-mate Johnson Charles (up six places to 19th), and Pakistan’s Babar Azam (up one spot to sixth) have also moved up in the batting rankings.
