UDF’s expansion plans hit snag as Kerala Kamaraj Congress chief Chandrasekharan opts out

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 22 (IANS) The Congress-led United Democratic Front’s (UDF) effort to expand its political base ahead of the Assembly elections in Kerala has suffered a setback, with Kerala Kamaraj Congress President Vishnupuram Chandrasekharan publicly ruling out any move to join the front as an associate member.

He was reacting soon after Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition (LoP) V.D. Satheesan, on Monday, after chairing a meeting of the entire UDF top brass announced that Chandrasekharan’s party along with Trinamool Congress (Kerala unit) led by two time former Left Independent legislator P.V. Anvar; and the Janadhipathya Rashtriya Party (JRP) led by tribal leader C.K. Janu was cleared to be admitted as associate members of the UDF.

Chandrasekharan has said that he has no intention of aligning with the UDF.

He clarified that while discussions with political leaders had taken place, he had neither submitted an application nor expressed formal interest in joining the Congress-led UDF.

“I am not someone who bargains in politics for positions or personal gain,” he said, adding that he has remained with the NDA for the past decade.

Chandrasekharan underlined his ideological roots, saying that he comes from an RSS background and has been a ‘swayamsevak’ since childhood.

“That movement shaped me, and mentally I remain aligned with those positions,” he said.

At the same time, he noted that his party is currently maintaining a distance from the BJP, a decision taken at a meeting attended by nearly 3,000 representatives and not revised since.

Internal differences, particularly over the use of workers’ votes for “other purposes”, persist within the party, he said, adding that discussions were underway to resolve these issues.

He also said that Union Minister and Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar had assured that existing problems could be addressed.

LoP Satheesan had said that parties which cooperated with the UDF in the recently held local body elections in Kerala were being considered for associate status, with the larger objective of strengthening the Congress-led UDF front electorally.

While P.V. Anvar extended full cooperation during the recent state local body polls, it did not translate into political gains for him.

Meanwhile, the UDF will hold a statewide yatra in February from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram to intensify the “anti-incumbency” sentiment against the CPI(M)-led LDF government, as it prepares for the state Assembly elections likely to be held in April/May next year.

Highlighting the essence of the conference, Bhanumathi Narasimhan, Chairperson, of the International Women’s Conference and the sister of the spiritual guru, said: “Just Be encourages us to pause, connect with our inner source, and find a balance between dynamism and relaxation. The recipients of the prestigious ‘Vishalakshi Award’ instated for valuable and inclusive contributions to service, arts, and culture included Union Minister Annapurna Devi in recognition of her service in the sphere of women empowerment and child welfare. Bollywood celebrity and MP Hema Malini for her contribution to Indian cinema, performing arts, and public service.

The Vishalakshi Award was also conferred to Patricia Scotland for her ground-breaking work in social justice and equality, Amla Ruia for contribution to sustainable rural development; Dr. Bhagyashree Prasad Patil for contribution in agricultural research and rural development; Katherine Winter Sellery for promoting Conscious parenting; R. Padmavati for preserving and curating the sculpture of 200 temples in India, among others.

The prestigious Acharya Ratnananda Award, named after Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s father was conferred upon Lt Col Anish Mohan in recognition of his courage and service in the face of adversity; and a well-known media personality for excellence in journalism.

Each rupee invested in India’s highways led to Rs 3 rise in GDP: IIM-Bangalore study

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) Investments made in India’s highways sector have translated to a more than three-fold increase in the country’s GDP due to the multiplier effect resulting from the creation of more jobs and incomes in the economy, according to an IIM-Bangalore study.

The research study said that every unit of expenditure on highway construction has contributed to a 3.21-unit increase in the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

According to the study, conducted from 2013 to 2022, national highway development has led to a 9 per cent increase in household incomes, a 6 per cent rise in household expenditure, and a double-digit surge of 10.4 per cent in car sales.

It also highlighted that the development of highways in the country has led to a close to 3 per cent reduction in transportation costs between factories and sources supplying raw materials and by 1.33 per cent between factories and customers that buy the finished products, reflecting an improved efficiency in the supply chain.

The study pointed out that the new highways have given a fillip to the agricultural sector and MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) which account for a major share of employment in the country.

The study done by IIM Bangalore’s Supply Chain Management Centre in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), evaluates the socio-economic impact of national highway expansion.

The development of the highway network has also increased accessibility to schools, higher education institutions, essential healthcare services, and community services, according to the report.

Besides, there has been a reduction in crime rates, accidents, pollution, noise levels, and traffic congestion in regions where the highways have been developed.

The study has been based on comprehensive surveys and analyses conducted across more than 100 districts, including varied socio-economic conditions.

The National Highways Authority of India spent a record Rs 2.07 lakh crore on the construction of national highways in 2023-24, the highest ever capital expenditure so far, and a jump of 20 per cent compared to Rs 1.73 lakh crore spent in 2022-23 and Rs 1.72 lakh crore in 2021-22.

According to official figures, the length of India’s National Highway network has surged by 60 per cent in the last 10 years from 91,287 km in 2014 to 146,195 km in 2024, making it the second largest road network in the world.

In a landmark achievement, National High-Speed Corridors have also increased from a mere 93 km in 2014 to 2,474 km in 2024, which reflects the quantum improvement in the country’s infrastructure.

Operation Sindoor was just trailer, world will see full picture when time comes: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Friday that Operation Sindoor was just a trailer and the Indian armed forces will show the full picture at the right time.

“Operation Sindoor isn’t over. What the world saw was just a trailer, and the Indian armed forces will show the full picture when the right time comes,” Defence Minister Singh told the air warriors and security forces at the IAF airbase in Gujarat’s Bhuj.

Lambasting Pakistan for nurturing terror factories on its soil, the Defence Minister said that the rogue nation was forced to realise the power of BrahMos missile.

“Just like the way, any habitual offender or a criminal with past antecedents is kept under watch, we have put Pakistan under probation. The ceasefire is not a cessation of action. If Pakistan doesn’t mend its ways and engages in misadventures again, our forces will teach it a firm lesson. Again!” he said.

Minister Singh’s direct warning to Pakistan came while he visited the airbase along with Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and congratulated the forces for the successful execution of Operation Sindoor.

“There is an old saying in our country, ‘Din mein taare dekhna’. Made in India BrahMos missile showed ‘raat ke andhere mein din ka ujala’ to Pakistan…,” he roared, while forces shouted in support.

“Just 23 minutes were enough for the Indian Air Force to crush terrorism being nurtured in Pakistan. What you did during Operation Sindoor made us all proud,” the Defence Minister told the warriors.

He further vowed to uproot terror and punish their handlers anywhere in the world, while reiterating India’s new security doctrine, which stresses on punitive measures rather than forgiveness for those who terrorise the nation.

He further told the armed forces, “Through Operation ‘Sindoor’, you have shown the world that it is not a symbol of adornment but of your valour and firm resolve.”

Rajnath Singh also questioned the funding of Pakistan by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), under the Extended Fund Facility programme.

“Pakistan will spend a large portion of the funds received from the International Monetary Fund on terror infrastructure in its country,” he stated.

Notably, the IMF had released the second tranche of $1.023 billion to Pakistan, which has been largely relying on the bailout package for survival.
