Seven killed in two roads accidents in Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati, Dec 26 (IANS) Seven people were killed and five others were injured in two separate road accidents in Andhra Pradesh early Friday morning, police said.

Three people were killed and three others injured when a car in which they were travelling was hit by a private travel bus in Guntur district.

The accident occurred near Ankireddypalem under the limits of Nallapadu Police Station when the car driver stopped the vehicle by the roadside. The private travel bus rammed into the car from behind.

The deceased hailed from Suryapet district in Telangana. They have been identified as Venkaiah (70), Susheela (64) and Mahesh (28). The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital.

The victims were returning to Suryapet from Tirupati.

In another accident, four people were killed in Nandyal district. The accident occurred near Nallagatla in Allagadda mandal when a speeding car hit the divider and rammed into a private travel bus coming from the opposite direction.

The four people travelling in the car died on the spot, while two others were injured. The injured have been admitted to the government hospital in Nandyal.

The travel bus was heading to Puducherry from Hyderabad. All passengers were safe. The authorities made alternate travel arrangements for the bus passengers.

The deceased were all residents of Hyderabad. They have been identified as Gunde Rao, Sravan, Narasimha and Bunny. Sai and Siddharth were undergoing treatment in Nandyal hospital.

According to the police, they were returning to Hyderabad from Tirupati. Gunde Rao and others were running a catering service in the Nizampet area of Hyderabad.

Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy has expressed shock over the accidents. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to provide the best possible treatment to the accident.

The minister has advised motorists to follow rules and take all precautions to avoid accidents. He said the government would further strengthen the road safety awareness programme.

Minister for Agriculture K. Atchenaidu and Minister for Roads and Buildings B.C. Janardhan Reddy have also expressed grief over the accidents.

Ahmedabad, June 22 (IANS) Despite repeated public advisories from Cyber Crime officials, digital fraud gangs continue to target unsuspecting individuals under the guise of central agencies like TRAI, CBI, and the Enforcement Directorate.

In a high-profile case, a woman working as a senior assistant at ONGC in Ahmedabad was defrauded of a staggering Rs 1.36 crore by cybercriminals posing as government officials.

The victim, identified as Triveni Patel, a resident of Gota area in Ahmedabad, was digitally manipulated into transferring large sums of money after being falsely accused of money laundering.

The scam began on May 31, when she received a call from an unknown number claiming to be from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The caller warned her that her phone services would be suspended within two hours. Shortly afterward, another man dressed in a police uniform and posing as a CBI officer contacted her via video call.

He alleged that Rs 2 crore of “black money” was detected in her Canara Bank account, which was linked to her Aadhaar card.

To increase credibility, the fraudsters sent her a fabricated Supreme Court-stamped letter via WhatsApp and showed her what appeared to be a live video of a courtroom, where a person dressed as a judge ordered her to cooperate.

Fearing arrest and legal action, Triveni followed instructions to prove her innocence. She was told that the Reserve Bank of India needed to verify her funds, and under that pretext, she transferred Rs 36 lakh from her own account. The fraudsters further pressured her into transferring more money eventually extracting a total of Rs 1.36 crore, which included funds withdrawn from her mother’s bank account and fixed deposits.

The scam only came to light when the fraudsters asked her to arrange money by selling her house, prompting Triveni to confide in relatives. Realising the deception, she approached the Cyber Crime Cell, which has since registered a case and begun a thorough investigation.

Officials have once again urged citizens to remain cautious of unsolicited calls, especially those claiming to represent central agencies. “No government body demands personal financial transactions over phone or video calls,” a senior cybercrime officer stated. Authorities are tracking the digital footprint of the gang involved.

LS Speaker Om Birla to lead Indian delegation to 150th IPU assembly in Tashkent today

New Delhi, April 5 (IANS) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is leading a high-level Indian parliamentary delegation to the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from April 5 to 9.

The event marks a significant milestone for global parliamentary cooperation, and Speaker Birla is poised to highlight India’s commitment to inclusive governance and social justice.

A press release from the Lok Sabha Secretariat confirmed that Birla, along with a distinguished group of parliamentarians, will actively participate in the discussions at the assembly.

“Om Birla will address the Assembly during the High-Level Segment of the General Debate on the theme Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice,” the release stated.

During his speech, the Speaker will emphasise India’s progressive stance on equitable governance through legislative frameworks.

The delegation is composed of prominent parliamentarians from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, and MPs such as Bhartruhari Mahtab, Anurag Singh Thakur, Vishnu Dayal Ram, Aparajita Sarangi, Dr. Sasmit Patra, Ashok Kumar Mittal, Kiran Choudhry, Lata Wankhede, and Bijuli Kalita Medhi.

The delegation also includes senior parliamentary officials, such as Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha, and P.C. Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha.

The IPU assembly will see Indian representatives taking part in crucial discussions and meetings of various IPU bodies, including the Governing Council, the Executive Committee, and several thematic panel discussions.

In addition to addressing the assembly, Speaker Birla will share perspectives with his counterparts from other parliaments, promoting India’s position on key global issues.

Vijay slams DMK over alleged TASMAC corruption, seeks action

Chennai, March 16 (IANS) TVK president and Tamil superstar Vijay has once again taken on the ruling DMK, and this time over alleged corruption in Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC).

In a strongly worded statement, Vijay accused the DMK of orchestrating large-scale financial fraud and urged authorities to take stringent action against those responsible.

Referring to recent searches by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Vijay stated that the level of organised corruption exposed in the report suggests it was planned by “highly experienced and cunning minds”.

He went on to claim that “an entire book on corruption” could be written about the DMK’s mismanagement of TASMAC. “From small fishes to whales, a deeper investigation will expose the key players in this scam. The truth must come to light, and those at the top — along with their associates — should be held accountable,” Vijay asserted.

Slamming the DMK’s governance model, he described it as an “empty advertising strategy” designed to mislead the public. “No matter how many crores they spend on propaganda, their corrupt tricks won’t work. The people will push them aside in the 2026 Assembly elections,” he added.

Vijay’s statement comes ahead of TVK’s much-anticipated general council meeting on March 28 in Chennai, where the party is expected to pass 23 resolutions — many of which will criticise both the DMK-led state government and the BJP-led Centre.

Party insiders suggest that Vijay’s attacks on both parties are set to escalate further in the coming weeks. His shift in tone was evident in a Women’s Day video message, where, for the first time, he directly criticized the DMK government. This marked a significant departure from his earlier strategy of avoiding direct attacks on political parties.

With his latest remarks on the TASMAC scandal, TVK cadres are reportedly energised, seeing this as a sign of Vijay’s more assertive political approach. His speech at the general council meeting is expected to intensify his criticisms of both the DMK and the BJP. Additionally, TVK is gearing up to hold a booth committee conference as part of its broader political strategy.

It may be recalled that Vijay officially launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on February 2, 2024, positioning it as a party against corruption and divisive politics.

While he chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he has confirmed that TVK will participate in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

On August 22, 2024, Vijay unveiled TVK’s flag and song at the party’s headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai. This was followed by TVK’s first major political conference on October 27, 2024, in Vikravandi, Villupuram district, which witnessed an estimated three lakh attendees.

At the Vikravandi event, Vijay launched scathing attacks on both the DMK and the BJP, branding the DMK as his political adversary and the BJP as his ideological adversary.

He accused the DMK of being a family-run party that manipulates the Dravidian identity for personal gain while denouncing the BJP for its divisive politics.

The DMK has dismissed Vijay’s allegations, claiming that he was indirectly supporting the BJP.

DMK leaders referred to TVK as the “C team” of the BJP, attempting to downplay its impact.

Despite such criticism, Vijay’s political influence has been steadily growing. His fan club-turned-political organisation, All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (AITVMI), made a strong mark in the 2021 Tamil Nadu local body elections, winning 115 out of the 169 seats it contested.

With Vijay now stepping up his political attacks, all eyes are on TVK’s general council meeting on March 28, where he is expected to outline plans for his party’s electoral roadmap for 2026.
