London: More than 2,900 violent incidents have been reported in Bangladesh, raising serious concerns over the safety of the country’s Hindu minority, London-based political group Hindus for Labour has said, calling the situation “unacceptable”.
Reacting to the developments, Hindus for Labour leader Dr Neeraj Patil, an Indian-origin doctor, urged the British Labour government to intervene through appropriate diplomatic channels, in keeping with the UK’s long-standing commitment to human rights, equality, freedom of religion or belief, and the protection of minorities.
The organisation said the continuing violence has left nearly 2.3 million Hindus in Bangladesh living under fear and insecurity. Dr Patil stressed that the issue requires urgent international attention and responsible engagement.
“Hindus for Labour believes that constructive diplomatic engagement is essential to ensure Bangladesh upholds its international human rights obligations,” he said, adding that all communities must be able to live in safety, dignity and without fear.
The group appealed to the UK government to use its influence to press for accountability and the protection of minority rights, while encouraging peaceful coexistence and the rule of law in Bangladesh.
