Joy, prosperity of Pongal will multiply under Dravidian model 2.0: CM Stalin

Chennai, Jan 15 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday said that the spirit of joy and prosperity associated with the Pongal festival would be multiplied many times under the Dravidian Model 2.0 of governance.

Tamil Nadu is celebrating ‘Thai Pongal‘, the traditional harvest festival of the Tamils, with great enthusiasm and cultural pride across the state. From villages to cities, families are welcoming the festival by wearing new clothes, decorating their homes, and preparing Pongal in new earthen pots, symbolising gratitude to nature and hope for abundance in the year ahead.

In his Pongal greeting message, the Chief Minister extended warm wishes to the people of the state, expressing hope that the festival would usher in prosperity, happiness, and progress in every Tamil household.

He highlighted the deep cultural and civilisational roots of Pongal, describing it as a festival that celebrates nature, labour, and collective well-being.

“May this Tamil festival, which honours wisdom, celebrates sweetness, and praises the red throne of dignity, enrich the lives of Tamils in the coming year,” the Chief Minister said in his message.

He noted that Pongal is not merely a ritualistic celebration but a reflection of Tamil identity, unity, and resilience that lives in the hearts and homes of the people.

CM Stalin further said that the Dravidian Model of governance aims to strengthen social justice, inclusive growth, and cultural pride, and that the happiness experienced during Pongal would grow manifold as these principles are carried forward in Dravidian Model 2.0.

According to him, the government’s welfare initiatives, economic reforms, and people-centric policies are designed to ensure that the fruits of development reach every section of society.

The Chief Minister also emphasised that Tamil festivals like Pongal bind the community together beyond differences of caste, creed, or economic status, reinforcing the spirit of equality and shared progress.

Concluding his message, CM Stalin expressed confidence that the collective strength of the people would guide Tamil Nadu towards greater achievements in the new year. “Let us move forward together and win together,” he said, signing off with the message of unity and optimism that defines the essence of Pongal celebrations.

Rajasthan Congress boycotts all party meeting before monsoon session

Jaipur, Aug 28 (IANS) The Congress party on Wednesday boycotted the all-party meeting convened before the start of the monsoon session of the Rajasthan Assembly.

The meeting, chaired by Speaker Vasudev Devnani, was called to ensure smooth conduct of proceedings during the session, but no Congress representative attended.

The boycott by the principal opposition party has given clear signals of a confrontation between the ruling BJP and Congress on the floor of the House.

Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully, while explaining the reason for the boycott, launched a scathing attack on the government. He alleged that the BJP government’s intention regarding the Assembly session was never clear.

“The Speaker wants the session to be long, but the government is keen to wrap it up in just a few days. If the session is curtailed, how will accountability of the government be ensured? In the last two and a half years, this government has proven to be both unsuccessful and unpopular, and we will expose it in the Assembly,” Julie said.

He further clarified that the Congress would participate in the proceedings on the first day of the session, but the party will meet on September 2 to finalise its strategy. A meeting of the legislature party has been called, where senior leaders, including the in-charge, state president and former Chief Ministers, will be present to chalk out the future course of action.

Raising serious allegations, Jully questioned why answers to legislators’ questions were not uploaded on the Assembly portal this time.

“Earlier, replies were uploaded for the public to see. This time, the government has withheld them. What is the government afraid of?” he asked.

Jully also condemned the removal of senior MLA Narendra Budhania from the post of Privilege Committee Chairman just days after his appointment, terming it an insult to a senior leader.

The Opposition leader accused the BJP government of working with a one-sided approach and undermining democratic values.

He claimed that Congress-backed Pradhans, Pramukhs and Body Presidents are being selectively removed in several districts.

He further alleged that the government, despite constitutional obligations, is deliberately delaying Panchayat Raj and Municipal elections, and instead seeking stays from the High Court.

“Even in the matter of student union elections, the government filed an affidavit in the High Court against holding polls. This clearly proves that the government does not believe in democracy, whether it is at the Panchayat level or in universities,” Jully charged.

With the Congress already sharpening its attack and boycotting the all-party meeting, political observers expect a stormy monsoon session marked by heated debates and confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Opposition.

Order of affirmation should contain reasons: SC

New Delhi, March 5 (IANS) The Supreme Court has reiterated that an order of affirmation may not require elaborate reasons but it does not mean that such an order need not contain any reason at all.

A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan was hearing a civil appeal challenging the order passed by the Bar Council of India (BCI) which had dismissed the appellant’s revision petition.

In 2015, the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) had dismissed the appellant’s complaint alleging professional misconduct committed by the respondent-advocates.

In its order, the Justice Datta-led Bench said that the impugned order of the BCI noted the facts giving rise to the revision and the arguments of the parties, spread over six pages but on the seventh page, the noting is completed in four lines whereafter the apex legal regulatory body spared “merely six lines for dismissing the revision without recording any reason at all”.

“In fact, the ipse dixit of the BCI that the impugned order of the BCD suffers from no infirmity and hence, does not warrant interference, is recorded,” it said.

The apex court emphasised that the law is well settled that an order of affirmation may not require elaborate reasons as required in the case of an order of reversal but it does not mean that such an order of affirmation need not contain any reason at all.

“Whether or not there was application of mind can only be disclosed by reason, howsoever briefly alluded to. (W)hat follows from the above is that the ‘what’, i.e., the conclusion, must have the ‘why’, i.e., the reasons (at least in brief), to stand on, which is conspicuous by its absence in the impugned order of affirmation,” said the Justice Datta-led Bench as it set aside the revisional order of the BCI.

The Supreme Court ordered the BCI to re-consider the revision petition and pass a fresh order after hearing the parties, in accordance with law, within six months from the date. Disposing of the appeal, the SC clarified that it has expressed no opinion on merits and left all points open for being agitated by the parties before the BCI.

NCB gets Interpol silver notice issued against Dubai-based fugitive drug lord

New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS) The first-ever Silver Notice of Interpol issued on the initiative of an Indian probe agency was issued against Dubai-based fugitive Pawan Thakur, wanted in connection with the recovery of around 82 kg of cocaine in Delhi in November 2024, the NCB said on Thursday.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), sharing information about the notice which it got published with close coordination of Interpol, said: “The Silver Notice will help in identifying, locating, and tracing properties and assets acquired through criminal proceeds by the fugitive across member countries of Interpol.”

The NCB said that investigations established that the fugitive is the mastermind behind the import, export, and trafficking of the seized cocaine.

He arranged for the consignment’s import through an Indian port and facilitated its onward movement to Delhi by road, said the NCB.

His associates managed warehousing and custodianship of the contraband in Delhi, while he personally mediated among handlers to ensure smooth distribution, it said.

During the investigation, the NCB discovered that the accused operated a Hawala network with bases in Dubai and Delhi, channeling illicit funds and laundering proceeds of narcotics trafficking into the formal financial system through his associates.

He is currently residing in Dubai and continues to operate his narcotics trafficking and money-laundering syndicate from there, said the NCB.

The federal probe agency said, “the Silver Notice will enable law enforcement agencies, financial intelligence units, and asset recovery offices worldwide to share information with NCB”.

The NCB has also urged law enforcement agencies, financial intelligence units, and asset recovery offices across Interpol member countries to extend cooperation by providing information on properties and assets linked to the fugitive.

India’s apex nodal agency working to prevent the trafficking of drugs and their abuse has been making continuous efforts in coordination with international agencies to dismantle organised drug syndicates and choke their financial flow.
