Assam CM congratulates Nitin Nabin on election as BJP president

Guwahati, Jan 20 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday congratulated Nitin Nabin on being elected as the new National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressing confidence that his leadership will further strengthen the party and its organisational base across the country.

In a post on X, Sarma said that on behalf of the people of Assam, he extends his heartfelt wishes to Nabin. Sarma noted that his long experience in organisational work and public service would empower party workers and reinforce the BJP’s role in national politics.

The Assam Chief Minister emphasised that Nabin’s elevation comes at a crucial time when the BJP is playing a central role in shaping India’s development trajectory under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

He said that Nabin’s leadership would serve as an inspiration for party workers to remain committed to strengthening the BJP’s contribution to the nation’s progress.

Sarma also invoked the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, praying for a successful and impactful tenure for the newly elected BJP chief.

Nitin Nabin’s appointment as BJP National President was announced earlier in the day in New Delhi, marking a significant organisational development for the ruling party.

Known for his strong grassroots connect and organisational skills, Nabin has held several key responsibilities within the party over the years and is credited with strengthening cadre-based politics.

Political observers view his elevation as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to energise the organisation ahead of upcoming Assembly elections in several states and to consolidate its position nationally.

New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS) Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Saturday, participated in the Rabi Workshop and Agricultural Advisory Dialogue held in Patna during his visit to Bihar.

Addressing agricultural scientists, advisors, and farmers at the event, Chouhan said, “Agriculture is the backbone of India’s economy, and farmers are its soul. Serving farmers is akin to worshipping God.”

Recalling India’s agricultural transformation, the Union Minister said, “There was a time when India imported red wheat from the United States under the PL-480 programme. Today, our granaries are full of wheat and rice, and India is in a position to export food grains to other countries.” He credited this progress to the tireless efforts of farmers and the vital contribution of agriculture advisors.

Appreciating the role of agriculture advisors, Chouhan said that without them, the achievements of research laboratories would never reach the ground level. “The Government has recognised both the need and the value of agricultural advisors, and is fully committed to protecting their honour and interests,” he said.

Highlighting Bihar’s potential in pulses and maize production, the Union Minister said, “Through the Pulses Mission, India will achieve self-reliance in pulse production, and agriculture advisors will play a crucial role in this endeavour.” He also referred to the recent hike in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) approved by the Union Cabinet.

During the programme, Chouhan informed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana focuses on districts with lower productivity, including several in Bihar. “Under this scheme, 11 departments will work collectively and in coordination to boost agricultural productivity,” he said.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s guiding principle of ‘Rashtrahit Sarvopari’ (Nation First), Chouhan asserted that India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers. “India today is moving forward as an independent and sovereign nation, acting on its own terms,” he said.

Commending the achievements of Bihar’s farmers, the Union Minister said that the state continues to lead in several crops and that agriculture will continue to remain the strongest foundation of India’s prosperity in the years ahead.

Delhi CM sends proposal to Centre for immediate procurement of 3,330 e-buses

New Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday that the Transport Department officials have submitted a detailed proposal to the Central Government’s agency, Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), for the immediate procurement of 3,330 additional electric buses.

The Chief Minister described the proposal as the Delhi government’s fresh step towards making the capital’s transport system completely ‘green’ and delivering a decisive blow against pollution.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made it clear that ensuring clean air in Delhi and providing citizens with a modern, convenient and affordable public transport system are among her government’s highest priorities.

With this objective, following a recent high-level meeting with CESL, it was decided to increase Delhi’s bus allocation under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme (Phase-2).

According to the Chief Minister, after reassessing requirements, demand has been placed for buses of different sizes to ensure connectivity from narrow streets to major arterial roads.

The Transport Department has sought a total of 3,330 buses, comprising 500 buses of 7 metres, 2,330 buses of 9 metres and 500 buses of 12 metres. All buses will be low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses.

The 7-metre buses will serve narrow streets and provide last-mile connectivity to residents. The 9-metre buses will operate on smaller roads and as feeder services. The 12-metre buses will be deployed on main routes and heavily congested corridors.

Chief Minister Gupta stated that her government has requested the Central Government and the Ministry of Heavy Industries to include this additional requirement (separate from the already allotted quota of 2,800 buses) under the subsidy model.

She said that if any technical hurdles arise with regard to subsidies, the Delhi Government is fully prepared to bear the cost itself to ensure that there is no delay in procuring the buses.

The Chief Minister believes that these 3,330 new buses are not merely a mode of public transport, but will also form the foundation of Delhi’s green transition. Their induction will reduce citizens’ dependence on private vehicles and lead to a significant reduction in harmful emissions.

Low-floor buses will make travel safer and more comfortable for women passengers and senior citizens. The Delhi Government aims to ensure that, in the coming months, Delhi’s bus fleet becomes one of the largest and cleanest electric bus networks in the world.

At present, a total of 5,336 government buses are operating in Delhi, of which 3,535 are electric buses. These include 1,162 nine-metre DEVI buses, 2,273 twelve-metre buses and 100 feeder buses.

According to the Chief Minister, more than 5,000 electric buses will be operating on Delhi’s roads by March this year. Her resolve is that by the end of 2026, 7,000 electric buses will be made available to the people of Delhi.

After the induction of 2,800 buses under PM E-DRIVE (Phase-1), the total number of buses in Delhi will rise to 10,430, and following the induction of 3,330 buses under PM E-DRIVE (Phase-2), the total fleet will increase to 13,760 buses, said a statement.

BMC elections results: BJP-led alliance takes early lead

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS) The BJP-led alliance has taken an early lead in the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, according to initial trends, as counting of votes began on Friday for civic body polls across Maharashtra.

The results are being closely watched, with elections held for 29 municipal bodies after a long gap of nearly nine years.

Early leads indicate that the BJP alliance is ahead in 34 wards in Mumbai’s BMC. Of these, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading in 25 wards, while Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction has taken the lead in nine wards.

Close on their heels are the Thackeray cousins, who are mounting a strong challenge to retain their influence over India’s richest civic body.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading in 23 wards, while Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is ahead in three wards, taking the combined Thackeray camp tally to 26 wards. The contest is being seen as a prestige battle, particularly in Mumbai, where control of the BMC carries significant political and financial clout.

The BMC, which has an annual budget exceeding Rs 74,400 crore, went to polls after a four-year delay. A total of 1,700 candidates were in the fray for 227 seats in Mumbai alone, reflecting the intense competition among political parties.

Exit polls had earlier predicted that the Thackeray factions could consolidate Maratha and Muslim votes, while the Congress was expected to retain its hold over minority-dominated pockets.

Across Maharashtra, polling was held on Thursday for 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards in 29 civic bodies. As many as 3.48 crore voters were eligible to cast their ballots to decide the fate of 15,931 candidates contesting the elections statewide.

Apart from Mumbai, Pune is another major battleground drawing attention. The city witnessed an unusual political alignment, with the two rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his uncle, Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Pawar, joining hands for the municipal polls. The outcome in Pune is expected to offer key insights into the evolving power dynamics within the NCP ahead of future state and national elections.

With counting still underway, political parties remain cautious, as early leads can shift significantly. Final results are expected to shape Maharashtra’s local governance landscape.
