Bihar: Nitish Kumar inaugurates projects worth Rs 316 crore in Gopalganj

Patna, Jan 20 (IANS) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for and inaugurated 40 development projects worth Rs 316 crore during his ‘Samriddhi Yatra’ (Prosperity Journey) in Gopalganj district.

The projects include the foundation stone laying of 33 schemes costing Rs 181 crore and the inauguration of seven completed schemes worth Rs 135 crore.

During his visit, the Chief Minister inaugurated the construction work of the Saran embankment in Batardeh Panchayat and inspected various development projects in Barauli block.

He also reviewed the functioning of the Community Health Centre there and directed officials to ensure the timely and quality execution of all development schemes.

Nitish Kumar held a review meeting with district officials to assess the progress of development works being implemented by various departments in Gopalganj.

He stressed that the benefits of welfare schemes must reach the last person in society transparently and instructed officials to ensure the prompt redressal of public grievances.

The Chief Minister also interacted with residents during a public outreach program held as part of the yatra.

Addressing the gathering, Nitish Kumar referred to the situation in Bihar before November 24, 2005, stating that there was a lack of rule of law at the time.

He said people were afraid to step out after dusk, social conflicts were frequent, the education system was in poor shape, healthcare facilities were limited, and road infrastructure was in a dilapidated condition.

He said that since coming to power, his government has carried out extensive work in the fields of education, health, roads, and electricity, which is now clearly reflected in Bihar’s development.

The Chief Minister also made an indirect reference to the tenure of Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, alleging that frequent changes in leadership and dynastic politics had hindered governance during that period.

Nitish Kumar began the Samriddhi Yatra on January 16 from the West Champaran district.

So far, he has covered East Champaran, Sheohar, and Sitamarhi, and on Tuesday reached Gopalganj.

Srinagar, Dec 25 (IANS) Senior Jammu and Kashmir Congress leader and MLA, G. A. Mir said on Tuesday that the National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha member, Syed Ruhullah Mehdi could have behaved more seriously than opting for what Mir called a ‘Camera show’.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Mir said that the NC Lok Sabha member, who held an anti-reservation protest march outside Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah’s residence on Monday could have behaved more seriously.

“He could have met the Chief Minister, who was just five minutes walk away from him. It has become a fashion for politicians to opt for ‘camera shows’ instead of showing more serious behaviour. He could have met the Chief Minister and raised his demands directly,” the Congress leader said while answering a question about the protest led by NC Lok Sabha member Mehdi on Monday outside the Gupkar Road residence of Omar Abdullah.

Syed Ruhullah Mehdi created a flutter in the ruling NC by leading a protest sit-in against the reservation policy of J&K under which just 40 per cent of vacancies are available to open merit candidates to compete while applying for government jobs.

The protests were also joined by Opposition PDP leaders, Waheed Para and Iltija Mufti, the daughter of PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti.

Chief spokesperson of Engineer Rashid-led Awami Ittihad Party (AIP) also joined Monday’s protest led by the NC MP.

Senior socio-religious separatist leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq supported the protest and said he would have joined it had the authorities allowed him to do so.

In a related development, NC MLA, Salman Sagar on Tuesday criticised Ruhullah Mehdi for carrying out a protest outside his own party leader and Chief Minister.

Salman Sagar said only those protests are allowed for the party leaders, which are permitted by Farooq Abdullah, NC President, or Omar Abdullah, the party’s Vice-President.

Salman regretted Ruhullah Mehdi’s behaviour and said it had only given a chance to the political opponents of the NC to create news against the Omar Abdullah-led NC government.

Karnataka HC grants bail to four Darshan fans accused of sending vulgar messages to actress Ramya

Bengaluru, Oct 10 (IANS) The Karnataka High Court on Friday granted bail to five fans of actor Darshan, arrested for posting vulgar messages to Kannada actress and former Congress MP Ramya after she expressed sympathy for the family of his fan Renukaswamy, who was allegedly brutally hacked to death by the actor and others.

Granting bail, a bench of Justice Shivashankar Amarannavar noted that the charge sheet has been filed in the case and the presence of the petitioners is not required for the investigation.

The accused were asked to produce a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh each, and each of them was also directed to produce one surety (a guarantor) who would also be liable for the same amount.

The accused who are released are K. Manjunath, C.Y. Manjunath. T. Obanna, K. Pramod, and Chinmay Shetty. The court has also granted anticipatory bail to one other accused, Vikas B.A., in the case.

Defence lawyers told the court that the accused are young boys and followers of actor Darshan. As the offence has taken place online, the question of tampering with the investigation doesn’t arise. It was also argued that the authorities have completed most of the investigation, and the complainant, actress Ramya, is an influential and powerful person, and there is no question of a threat to her.

The prosecution objected and stated that the accused face serious allegations of threatening to commit rape and murder.

The Karnataka Police on Thursday submitted a charge sheet against 12 persons to the court in connection with sending vulgar messages to Ramya, after she expressed sympathy for the family of the victim in the fan murder case. All 12 accused are fans of actor Darshan, who is the second accused in the fan murder case. His partner, Pavithra Gowda, is the first accused. Both are currently lodged in Bengaluru Central jail.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB), Bengaluru Unit, has submitted a 380-page charge sheet to the 45th Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court. The police have also included screenshots of the messages and comments made on social media.

The chargesheet also contains the statement of Ramya and the confessional statements of the accused persons. While the charge sheet has been filed against 12 accused, the police are still searching for six more suspects.

The police stated that an additional charge sheet will be filed once the remaining accused are arrested and investigated. Of the 12 arrested, four are still in jail, while the others have been released on bail.

The court is expected to take up the trial soon.

Darshan’s fans had targeted Ramya for sharing a post about the fan murder case and commenting that justice should be served. The accused had even threatened Ramya with rape.

Ramya had lodged a police complaint against 43 social media accounts. She had filed a complaint with Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh on July 28 against actor Darshan’s fans for sending obscene and defamatory messages following her remarks on the fan murder case.

In her complaint, Ramya stated: “The disgruntled fans of actor Darshan, for this act of mine of sharing the news reporting of the Supreme Court proceedings, have sent scandalous, ghastly and obnoxious messages to my Instagram handle through various accounts. The messages sent to me are so disgusting and misogynistic that I am unable to even reproduce the same in the complaint.”

The Film Industry for Rights and Equality (FIRE) organisation had submitted a letter to state Home Minister G. Parameshwara demanding immediate action against vulgar and misogynistic social media abuse targeting Ramya.

Reacting to the vulgar messages and videos posted by actor Darshan’s fans against her, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission had also urged the Bengaluru Police Commissioner to take action in the matter.

TN to roll out multi-lingual audio guides at 22 key tourist sites

Chennai, June 8 (IANS) In a move to modernise tourism and improve visitor engagement, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) is set to introduce immersive, self-guided audio tours at 22 prominent heritage and cultural sites across the state, including three landmark locations in Chennai.

The initiative will feature curated audio content in multiple languages, allowing tourists to explore sites at their own pace while gaining historical, cultural, and local insights.

Designed to be user-friendly and accessible via smartphones or handheld devices, the tours aim to make travel more enriching and inclusive. Among the major destinations included in the project are Sankagiri Fort Complex, Gingee Fort, Kazhugumalai, Trichy Rock Fort, Thirparankundram, Kattabomman Memorial Fort, Fort Dansborg, Sittannavasal, Vellore Fort, Sadras Dutch Fort, Padmanabhapuram Palace, Saraswati Mahal Library and Museum, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Airavatesvara Temple, Brihadeeswara Temple, the streets around Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Poompuhar Complex, and Dhanushkodi.

In Chennai, audio tours will be launched at the Ekambareswarar Temple, Kapaleeshwarar Temple, and the historic monuments along Marina Beach.

A senior TTDC official said, “The project is aimed at enhancing visitor experience by offering self-paced, site-specific storytelling. These audio guides will include historical facts, folklore, and ambient sounds to deepen tourists’ appreciation of Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural legacy.”

To ensure authenticity and depth, content will be developed in collaboration with historians, subject matter experts, and local communities. The audio guides will be available in multiple languages and include accessibility features such as closed captions, screen reader compatibility, and language support for hearing-impaired visitors.

The project also involves the deployment of a centralised monitoring system for quality assurance and consistency across sites. The mobile application will be integrated with Google Maps, helping visitors navigate tourist routes and access nearby recreational and transport services.

“The integration of AI-powered translation is being explored to offer real-time multilingual support,” the official added.

The initiative reflects Tamil Nadu’s broader vision to promote tech-enabled, inclusive, and heritage-sensitive tourism experiences that cater to both domestic and international travellers.
