Maha: Sunetra Pawar gets excise, sports and minority affairs portfolios

Mumbai, Jan 31 (IANS) Newly appointed first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Sunetra Pawar gets the charge of excise, sports, youth welfare, and minority affairs and Auqaf departments after swearing in on Saturday. ​

Governor Acharya Devvrat, in a communication addressed to the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the allocation of three key portfolios, including State Excise Duty, Sports and Youth Welfare, and Minorities Development and Aukaf.​

She has not been allocated the finance and planning departments, held by former deputy chief minister late Ajit Pawar, especially when the budget session of the state legislature will start from February 23.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will hold the finance and planning departments, and is also expected to present the annual budget for 2026-27.​

These portfolios were previously held by the late Ajit Pawar, who passed away in a plane crash earlier this week. While Sunetra Pawar takes over these three departments, the high-profile Finance and Planning ministries, which were also under Ajit Pawar, have been retained by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This move ensures administrative continuity as the state prepares for the upcoming Budget session in March.​

NCP insiders said that the party, after the conclusion of the upcoming budget session of the state legislature, will request the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to allocate the finance and planning departments to Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar. ​

The decision was finalised after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislature party unanimously elected Sunetra Pawar as its leader. The proposal for the portfolio allocation was sent by Fadnavis to the Governor earlier today and received immediate approval.​

Observers view this appointment as a strategic move to stabilise the party and the Mahayuti alliance ahead of the local body elections.​

Earlier, Sunetra Pawar was sworn in as the first woman deputy chief minister of Maharashtra. In a simple ceremony held at Lok Bhavan, the Governor Acharya Devvrat administer Sunetra Pawar the oath of office and secrecy. ​

The Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, DCM Eknath Shinde, ministers, and legislators were present at the swearing-in ceremony. She took the oath solemnly.​

New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) A day after taking the salute at the Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path, President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday interacted with special visitors, including students, tribals, tableaux artists and NSS volunteers and NCC cadets who took part in the Republic Day Parade, an official said.

Separate groups of students from Leh, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir called on the President, said a statement by the President’s Secretariat on social media.

“During the day, she also met guests from tribal communities, tableaux artists and tractor drivers, NSS volunteers and NCC cadets, officials and other participants of the Republic Day Parade 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” said the official.

On Monday, Murmu hosted the traditional ‘At Home’ reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, bringing together prominent dignitaries to mark the conclusion of the day’s celebrations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and several other distinguished guests attended the reception.

The ‘At Home’ event is a long-standing tradition held every year on Republic Day to commemorate the adoption of India’s Constitution on January 26, 1950.

This year’s reception carried added significance with the presence of the two European leaders, who had earlier served as joint Chief Guests at the Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path.

Their participation highlighted the strengthening ties between India and the European Union.

Discussions on trade, security, and multilateral cooperation are expected to continue during the 16th EU-India Summit scheduled for January 27.

The invitation for the reception featured artistic elements inspired by the cultural heritage and diversity of India’s North-Eastern states.

Guests gathered in the historic setting of Rashtrapati Bhavan, exchanging greetings and reflecting on the day’s events.

This year’s special invitation for the ‘At Home’ was handcrafted by artisans from the North Eastern states.

The invitation kit included a box made from a woven bamboo mat from Tripura for a wall-hanging-type, panelled invite that showcased traditional art from all eight states of the North East.

The decorative motifs on the cover and the box of the invitation drew inspiration from the Assamese manuscript painting style.

The motifs on the fabric panel represented the flora and fauna of the North-Eastern region. Other highlights included woven nettle fabric and embroidery from Sikkim, green bamboo weave from Meghalaya, Mon Shugu Paper from Arunachal Pradesh, Gogona — a bamboo jaw harp from Assam, and bamboo jewellery from Tripura, orange wild rhea and stinging nettle fabric from Nagaland, handwoven Puan Chei from Mizoram, Longpi Black Pottery from Manipur and an Eri Silk stole.

Haifa port in Israel operating normally despite Iran attack

New Delhi, June 15 (IANS) There has been no damage to Israel’s Haifa port in the Iranian ballistic missile attack on an oil refinery nearby and cargo operations are progressing unhindered, according to media reports.

Despite strikes targeting the Haifa oil refinery and surrounding areas, the port itself is operating normally, with cargo operations continuing unhampered, reports confirmed.

There are eight ships at the port now and cargo operations were being carried out normally, according to the reports.

Late on Saturday night, Iran targeted Israel’s Haifa port and a nearby oil refinery in retaliation to Tel Avi’s attack on Iranian nuclear sites and missile factories and military command centres. Top military commanders and nuclear scientists were killed in the attacks launched by air.

Shrapnel fell in the chemical terminal at the port and some other projectiles fell at the oil refinery but there is no damage to the port facilities. The refinery is reported to be at some distance from the port facilties.

Haifa Port is a major international seaport located in northern Israel, a relatively less volatile region compared to the south. It is an important port for Israel both for imports and exports of the country.

A major escalation unfolded as Iran reportedly launched a fresh barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel for the second consecutive night, with Iranian state media claiming a direct hit on the Haifa oil refinery, sparking a large fire near the northern port city. Official Israeli confirmation of a refinery strike remains pending.

The missile assault reportedly struck a residential building in Tamra near Haifa, killing three and injuring at least 14 others.

Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on each other overnight into Sunday, killing scores, as US President Donald Trump said the conflict could be ended easily while warning Tehran not to strike any US targets.

Israeli rescue teams combed through the rubble of residential buildings destroyed in strikes, using flashlights and sniffer dogs to look for survivors after at least 10 people, including children, were killed, authorities said.

Iran has said at least 138 people have been killed in Israel’s onslaught since Friday. The Israeli military warned Iranians living near weapons facilities to evacuate.

US President Donald Trump has said that Washington is not involved in the attacks in Iran. However, Tehran has alleged a US hand in the Israeli offensive and has called off the nuclear talks which were scheduled to take place in Oman on Sunday.

Trump has warned Tehran against any retaliatory attacks on US facilities or interests.

“If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict,” he added

India reaffirms unwavering support to Bhutan’s overall economic development

New Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) India has reaffirmed unwavering support to Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan, including the Economic Stimulus Programme, along with actively assisting the Himalayan Kingdom in achieving its key development priorities and advancing sustainable growth across sectors, an official statement said on Wednesday.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day state visit to Bhutan, the Bhutanese side appreciated India’s assistance for its 13th Five-Year Plan period for various projects under implementation across Bhutan and their contribution to the country’s development.

PM Modi also conveyed the full support of the Government of India for the realisation of “His Majesty’s vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City”.

“PM Modi announced the decision to establish an Immigration Check Post at Hatisar, Assam, to facilitate easy movement of investors and visitors to Gelephu. His Majesty appreciated the Government of India’s support for the construction of Gyalsung academies,” according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The leaders welcomed the understanding reached regarding the resumption of work on the main dam structure of the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I hydroelectric project and agreed to work for expeditious completion of the project.

Once completed, Punatsangchhu-I will be the largest hydroelectric project jointly developed by the two Governments.

The leaders also welcomed the active engagement of Indian companies in the hydropower projects in Bhutan.

The Bhutanese side expressed appreciation for the announcement by the Government of India of a concessional Line of Credit of Rs 40 billion to fund energy projects in Bhutan.

The two sides underlined the importance of improving cross-border connectivity and enhancement of border infrastructure, including the setting up of Integrated Check Posts.

Both sides also welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the establishment of cross-border rail links (Gelephu-Kokrajhar and Samtse-Banarhat) in September 2025 and the subsequent establishment of the Project Steering Committee for the project’s implementation.

“The Bhutanese side expressed appreciation for the steps taken by the government of India to institutionalise arrangements for the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities and fertilisers to Bhutan. Both sides welcomed the arrival of the first consignment of fertilisers from India under the new arrangement,” according to the PMO statement.

Several MoUs were signed during PM Modi’s November 11-12 visit, including an MoU between Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB), and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, on Cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy; MoU between Ministry of Health, RGoB, and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GoI, on Cooperation in the field of Health and Medicine; and MoU between The PEMA Secretariat and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, GoI on Building Institutional Linkages.
