Final electoral roll to be published on Feb 17: TN CEO ​

Chennai, Jan 31 (IANS) The final electoral roll for Tamil Nadu will be published on February 17, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik announced on Saturday. ​

The CEO said the state is currently carrying out a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the electoral rolls in accordance with the directions of the Election Commission of India. ​

As part of this exercise, the draft electoral roll listing voters who submitted enumeration forms during the enumeration phase was published on December 19, 2025. ​

Following the publication of the draft roll, the Election Commission provided a window from December 19, 2025, to January 30, 2026, for citizens to file claims and objections. ​

During this period, eligible citizens whose names were not included in the draft list, as well as those who had completed 18 years of age, were given the opportunity to apply for inclusion in the electoral roll. New voters seeking inclusion were required to submit Form-6 along with a declaration form. ​

Citizens who wished to object to a proposed inclusion or seek deletion of an existing registration were asked to submit Form-7. ​

Meanwhile, voters seeking correction of personal details, change of address, updates in the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC), or identification as persons with disabilities were instructed to apply using Form-8. The CEO stated that the claims and objections received during the acceptance period are now being processed.

Between December 19, 2025, and January 30, 2026, a total of 34,75,717 applications – including both online and offline submissions – were received across the state.

All applications will be scrutinised and processed at the district level by the respective Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), following due verification procedures as prescribed by the Election Commission. ​

Necessary inclusions, deletions, and corrections will be made after examining the eligibility and validity of each application. Once this verification and processing exercise is completed, the final electoral roll will be published on February 17, 2026, the CEO confirmed. ​

The updated roll will serve as the official voter list for upcoming electoral processes in the state. ​

The Election Commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a comprehensive, accurate, and inclusive electoral roll, urging citizens to verify their details once the final list is released to avoid last-minute issues during elections.

Law College rape case: Forensic reports of mobile phone, blood samples confirm involvement of accused

Kolkata, July 26 (IANS) Two crucial forensic reports in connection with the Law College rape case in Kolkata have confirmed the involvement of the three prime accused in the case, one being the perpetrator and the other two being the facilitators.

City Police sources said that the first forensic report is on the analysis of the mobile phone of one of the three prime accused persons, Monojit Mishra, the perpetrator of the crime of rape of the law college student.

“The forensic analysis of the mobile phone of Mishra has provided us with definite clues about not only the rape of the law college student last month, but also regarding charges of similar sexual exploitation committed by him in the past,” the City Police officer said.

However, he refused to divulge any further details on this matter.

The second forensic report concerns the blood samples collected from the scene of the crime, specifically the guard room within the law college.

“This report has given us substantial clues about the involvement of Mishra and two other accused, namely Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, in the crime. In simple terms, the contents of these two forensic reports have enough materials to make the case watertight against the prime accused,” the City Police official said.

While Mishra has been identified as the perpetrator of the crime of rape, Ahmed and Mukhopadhyay have been identified as the facilitators in the crime.

Already, the investigating team member has recorded statements of 60 witnesses in the matter. Their statements, as well as footage from CCTV cameras within the law college premises, have provided additional clues to the investigation, helping to establish a watertight case against the accused.

This week, the investigating officers conducted gait pattern analysis of the three accused, which is a scientific way of matching the body language of the accused with that recorded in the CCTV camera footage.

In the CCTV camera’s footage, the accused persons were seen dragging the victim to the guard room, where they allegedly raped her.

Industrial growth slows to 0.4 per cent in festive October

New Delhi, Dec 1 (IANS) The growth rate of India’s industrial production slowed to 0.4 per cent in October this year, which “could be attributed to the fewer working days because of a number of festivals in the month, including Dussehra, Dipawali and Chhath”, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Statistics on Monday.

The country’s industrial growth rate, based on the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), had accelerated to 4 per cent in September and August from a four-month high of 3.5 per cent in July, which, in turn, had surged from 1.5 per cent in June.

The manufacturing sector recorded a positive growth of 1.8 per cent during October compared to the same month of the previous year. Within the manufacturing sector, 9 out of 23 industry groups have recorded positive growth during the month. The top three positive contributors for October are – “Manufacture of basic metals” (6.6 per cent), “Manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products” (6.2 per cent), and “Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers” (5.8 per cent).

In the industry group “Manufacture of basic metals”, item groups “HR coils and sheets of mild steel”, “Flat products of Alloy Steel”, and “MS slabs” have shown significant contribution in growth, according to the official figures.

However, the mining and electricity sectors contracted by (-) 1.8 per cent and (-) 6.9 per cent, respectively, during the month. “Lower demand in October 2025 and consequent decline in electricity generation were driven by extended rainfall season and comfortable ambient temperature across multiple States and UTs,” the statement said.

The figures on use-based classification show that the production of capital goods, which comprise machines used in factories, went up by 2.4 per cent in October over the same month of the previous year. This segment reflects the real investment taking place in the economy, which has a multiplier effect on the creation of jobs and incomes going ahead.

The infrastructure and construction sector clocked a 7.1 per cent growth during the month compared to the same month of the previous year on the back of big-ticket government projects being implemented in the highways, railways, and ports sectors.

Dharmasthala case: Karnataka HC lifts stay on SIT probe against activists

Bengaluru, Nov 12 (IANS) In a major development related to the sensational Dharmasthala case, the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday lifted the stay on the Special Investigation Team’s probe against the activists.

A bench headed by Justice Mohammad Nawaz directed the SIT not to “harass” the activists during the course of the investigation.

Earlier, on October 30, the court had stayed the investigation and restrained the SIT from proceeding against activists Girish Mattennavar, Mahesh Shetty Timarody, Vittal Gowda, and T. Jayath. These activists had been at the forefront of protests against the temple authorities, alleging mass killings.

The activists have also filed a petition before the High Court seeking to quash the FIR and the investigation against them.

SIT’s Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) B. N. Jagadeesh had submitted to the court that the investigation was being carried out with the magistrate’s consent.

He also brought to the court’s notice that the activists themselves had earlier praised the SIT’s investigation.

Counsel for the activists, S. Balan, argued that the petitioners had been issued notices nine times and repeatedly interrogated.

The petitioners have been named as accused in the FIR, and the notices were served through WhatsApp messages, instead of being delivered in person, he submitted.

He further contended that the petitioners are neither accused nor witnesses in the case, and that the notice was issued due to political, religious, and organisational rivalry.

“In the name of inquiry, they are being made to sit from morning till midnight. More than 150 hours of questioning have already been conducted. Initially, an FIR was registered under Section 211(a), and later, other sections were added,” Balan stated.

SPP B.N. Jagadeesh, on the other hand, argued that the complaint by Chinnayya, known as the “masked man”, was filed at the instigation of the petitioners.

Later, Chinnayya made specific allegations against the petitioners, he said.

He further informed the court that excavations and inspections had been conducted at 20 locations in Dharmasthala village, and notices were issued to the petitioners after they were made accused in the case.

After the first notice was issued, the petitioners “failed” to appear, and hence, a fresh notice under the same section has now been issued, he added.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the bench of Justice Mohammad Nawaz had earlier ordered that the investigation be stayed until November 12.

Notably, on July 11, the complainant, Chinnayya, claimed before a court that he had been forced to bury the bodies of women and girls who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala.

He had requested that the bodies be exhumed in his presence and alleged that the victims bore clear signs of sexual assault.

The whistleblower reportedly submitted a skull, allegedly recovered from one of the burial sites, to the SIT.

State Home Minister G. Parameshwara had also confirmed the recovery of a skull.

However, later, the SIT arrested the unknown complainant-cum mask man Chinnaiah, on charges of providing false information.
