Bengaluru: Former Additional Advocate General of the Karnataka High Court Arun Shyam on Sunday said that a society guided by the ideals of Lord Rama, the teachings of Lord Krishna and the principles of Anna Basavanna would have little need for courts or a complex judicial system.
Delivering a lecture on “Judiciary and Law” at the Taralabalu Purnima programme organised by Sirigere Math, Arun Shyam said moral and philosophical values laid down by India’s spiritual leaders offer a blueprint for peaceful coexistence and social harmony. “If these ideals are sincerely practised, disputes in society would reduce significantly,” he said.

Referring to the concept of Rama Rajya, Arun Shyam said people-centric governance and social welfare were central to the philosophy. “Sri Rama’s vision was rooted in the welfare of society. The teachings of Sri Krishna and the vachanas of Basavanna also emphasise justice, equality and harmonious living,” he noted.
Highlighting the role of social reform, Arun Shyam said economic development alone was not sufficient. “Social reform must go hand in hand with economic progress. A just and harmonious society ultimately safeguards humanity,” he said, adding that excessive litigation often reflects deeper social failures.
Quoting the ancient maxim ‘Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah’, he said protecting ethical values ensures the protection of society itself. “This eternal truth, echoed by philosophers over centuries, remains relevant even today,” he observed.
Arun Shyam also praised Sirigere Math for its unique tradition of dispensing justice. “The speciality of Sirigere Math is the establishment of a Nyaya Peetha, where justice is delivered in the spirit of service,” he said, lauding the institution for combining spiritual guidance with social responsibility.
The programme was held under the guidance of Dr Shivamurthy Shivacharya Swamiji, head of Sirigere Math, which is known for its contributions to education, food service and social justice.
