Tamil Nadu BJP releases ‘report card’ on DMK govt, alleges governance failures

Chennai, Feb 21 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released a sharply critical “people’s verdict report card” on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, alleging failures in governance, corruption, and unfulfilled electoral promises during its 2021-2026 tenure.

The report, presented by Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagenthran, assesses the performance of the DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin across key sectors, including cost of living, employment, law and order, education, healthcare, agriculture, and women’s safety.

According to the BJP, the DMK had made 505 electoral promises ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections but has fully or substantially implemented only a limited number of them. The party disputed the state government’s claim of near-total fulfilment, alleging that several promises remain either partially implemented or yet to be addressed.

The report accused the state government of failing to effectively control rising prices, create adequate employment opportunities for youth, and strengthen public safety mechanisms. It also alleged deterioration in law and order and claimed that economic management has discouraged investment and affected growth prospects.

The BJP further raised concerns over the condition of public infrastructure in the education and healthcare sectors, alleging gaps in service delivery and infrastructure development.

On the issue of corruption, the BJP alleged systemic irregularities and referred to earlier remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has criticised what he termed “dynastic politics” in Tamil Nadu.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also previously alleged a “20 per cent corruption premium” in the state, a charge that the DMK has consistently denied.

The BJP also criticised the DMK’s alliance with the Congress, referring to past political controversies and governance-related issues.

However, the ruling DMK has repeatedly rejected such allegations and maintained that its “Dravidian Model” of governance prioritises social justice, welfare expansion, and inclusive growth.

The release of the report comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. BJP leaders said the document reflects feedback gathered through statewide outreach programmes and interactions with the public.

Responding earlier to similar criticism, DMK leaders have defended their government’s performance, citing welfare initiatives, infrastructure development, and fiscal management as indicators of progress.

With political exchanges intensifying ahead of the elections, the debate over governance and accountability is expected to remain a key issue in Tamil Nadu’s political discourse in the coming months.

They said the scheme has enabled them with accurate property ownership data, thus making it easier to maintain land records. They also shared their experience of interacting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

With the distribution of 6.5 million property cards across more than 50,000 villages in 12 states and Union territories, PM Modi’s SVAMITVA scheme is already making a significant impact in rural India. The beneficiaries shared that not only has it reduced land disputes, but it has also helped secure their property rights, opening new avenues for economic growth and development.

Many beneficiaries in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district spoke to IANS and shared their heartfelt experiences, particularly emphasizing the positive impact of receiving the property card and also their virtual interaction with PM Modi.

Raushan Patil, a farmer from Mangalpur village explained how the scheme transformed his life:

“I’ve been farming in my village for years. When I got the SVAMITVA card on October 1, 2023, everything changed. With the card in hand, I was able to secure a loan to build my house and improve my farming with better irrigation. My income has increased, and my farming has become more productive. The most significant benefit, though, is that this card serves as solid proof of ownership. Earlier, disputes would arise between brothers over land rights, but now, thanks to the drone survey and clear ownership records, everyone has separate rights to their land. This has completely resolved the conflicts and brought peace to our family.”

Raushan also noted that the SVAMITVA scheme has brought clarity to land ownership and drastically reduced the number of disputes.

“Earlier, there were constant fights over land because the ownership was not clear. Now, with the clear documentation, we have a sense of security and all the disputes have been resolved. This card is a lifesaver, and it’s a huge relief for all of us,” he said.

Chetram Uikey, another beneficiary, highlighted how the scheme helped him secure financial opportunities.

“I had been waiting for something like this for a long time. The SVAMITVA card is a permanent document that proves ownership. Now, I can approach the bank for loans without any issues. Before this, even though we owned land, it was difficult to prove ownership or use the land for financial purposes. But with this card, I can confidently say that my property is mine, and I can use it to improve my life,” he said.

Chetram also shared his satisfaction with the government’s support and how the card makes it easier for villagers to access loans and financial schemes: “Now that we have the card, I can apply for loans with ease. The property is now a legal asset, and I believe this will make our village’s financial future much brighter. Plus, the Prime Minister’s support for the scheduled caste community is very encouraging, as it will help many who have struggled due to lack of resources in farming.”

He also mentioned his excitement about the opportunity to interact with PM Modi virtually, saying, “It was wonderful to hear directly from the Prime Minister. It would have been even better to connect with him personally, but hearing from him was very inspiring. I believe this scheme will bring lasting change to our village and others like ours.”

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the beneficiaries during the distribution of property cards.

“SVAMITVA is not just about land ownership; it’s about securing your rights, your future, and your financial freedom. The scheme would contribute to the economic growth of rural areas, thereby improving the quality of life for millions of citizens,” PM Modi said.

Today, more than 6.5 million property cards were distributed to the property owners in more than 50,000 villages across 230 districts. The program helps rural families claim their rightful land, resolve conflicts, and increase their access to financial support, marking a milestone in India’s rural development journey. The SVAMITVA scheme uses advanced drone and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to map and document land ownership.

Protesting Asha workers in Kerala to intensify stir, launch indefinite fast from Thursday

Thiruvananthapuram, March 17 (IANS) The Kerala Asha workers’ protest before the state Secretariat entered its 36th day on Monday, and it was decided that from Thursday, three of them will begin an indefinite fast till their demands are met.

Many of the Asha (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers are protesting by lying down on the road in the summer heat, which saw seven of them fainting and being quickly taken to the hospital.

They are demanding a hike in their monthly honorarium from Rs 7,000 to Rs 21,000, along with retirement benefits and the clearance of pending payments.

On Monday, a steady stream of top Congress leaders including Leader of Opposition V.D.Satheesan, and veteran legislator Ramesh Chennithala reached the spot to support the siege that was announced by the protesters by blocking the main road to the Secretariat.

“It’s most unfortunate that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is a silent spectator to what’s happening in front of his office. Gone are the days when the Left had a soft corner for the working class, but Vijayan today is a changed man and has become extreme right,” Satheesan said.

Hitting back at the Congress, ruling Left Democratic Front convenor and CPI-M legislator T.P. Ramakrishnan said that the protesters will be able to end their strike but there are some vested interests who have instigated them, so the state government is helpless.

“The ball is in their court now and the state government has nothing to do,” said Ramakrishnan.

The CPI-M-led Vijayan government has come under sharp criticism not just from the Congress-led UDF and the BJP but from various sections of society and with every passing day, the support base for the Asha workers is increasing and now all eyes are on the indefinite fast starting Thursday.

Yogi govt approves Uttar Pradesh Rozgar Mission, move to open floodgates of opportunities for youth

Lucknow, July 3 (IANS) In a landmark decision, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Thursday approved the formation of the Uttar Pradesh Rozgar Mission.

The mission is expected to open the floodgates of opportunities for states’ youth and generate umpteen employment opportunities not only across the country, but also abroad.

The mission is aimed at providing 1 lakh domestic and 25,000–30,000 overseas private jobs in a year.

Sharing details of the landmark decision, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna told mediapersons that 30 proposals were approved, including this transformative employment initiative.

The visionary move by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is set to empower the youth of Uttar Pradesh, while positioning the state as a global human resource hub.

Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar shared that the Employment Department was helping unemployed youth through Rozgar Melas and employers but with this launch, the youth will get access to both domestic and international job markets. He added that the mission aims to provide jobs to 1 lakh youth in India and 25,000–30,000 youth abroad within a year.

He further shared that during earlier times, the state depended on licensed recruiting agents (RAs) for foreign job placements. But with this mission, the government will now have its own RA license, allowing it to send people abroad for jobs directly. He also said that there is a rising demand globally for UP’s skilled workforce — especially in paramedical, nursing, driving, and technical fields. This mission will help tap into that potential.

In another major decision, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the construction of a controlled-access Greenfield Link Expressway connecting the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to the Purvanchal Expressway. The six-lane expressway, which can be expanded to eight lanes in the future, will span approximately 49.96 km. The project will be built on the EPC model and is estimated to cost Rs 4,775.84 crore, fully funded by the state government.

Once completed, the link will significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time between major cities like Lucknow, Agra, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Ghazipur. Importantly, it is expected to ease traffic congestion in Lucknow.
