Assam: BJP to contest in three vacant RS seats

Guwahati, Feb 21 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the BJP is set to contest the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats from the state that are scheduled to go to the polls on March 16, while preparations are also underway to frame a strategy for the third vacant seat.

Sarma said the BJP has already decided to give party tickets for the two Rajya Sabha seats that are falling vacant and will soon complete the internal process for finalising candidates.

He added that the party will closely monitor the strategy adopted by opposition parties before taking a final call on contesting the third vacant seat.

“The BJP will prepare its tactics to fight the third vacant seat as well. However, the final decision on that will be taken after watching the strategy of the opposition parties,” the Chief Minister said.

Sarma further informed that a panel of three candidate names will be prepared by the BJP’s state unit and sent to the party’s central leadership in New Delhi for approval.

He said the process of shortlisting names is currently underway within the organisation.

According to the Chief Minister, BJP state president Dilip Saikia will formally forward the list of shortlisted candidates to the central leadership for its consideration and final clearance.

“As per party norms, the state unit will recommend a panel of names, and the central leadership will take the final decision,” Sarma said.

The Chief Minister also hinted that the BJP is confident of its numerical strength in the Assam Legislative Assembly, which plays a crucial role in the Rajya Sabha elections.

He said the party will approach the elections in a planned and disciplined manner, keeping in mind both organisational interests and the broader political situation in the state.

The elections to the Rajya Sabha seats from Assam are scheduled to be held on March 16.

Political activity in the state has intensified in recent days, with both the ruling BJP and opposition parties holding internal discussions and consultations ahead of the polls.

With the BJP-led alliance enjoying a comfortable majority in the Assembly, the ruling party is widely expected to secure the two seats, while the contest for the remaining seat is likely to depend on opposition unity and strategy.

Naveen Patnaik seeks Centre’s intervention over urea shortage in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 30 (IANS) Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Odisha Assembly and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief, Naveen Patnaik, has written to Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers J.P. Nadda, flagging the issue of urea shortage during the ongoing Kharif season.

Naveen Patnaik, in his letter dated August 29, urged J.P. Nadda to ensure the adequate supply of urea to Odisha in the “interest of the farming community.”

Highlighting that agriculture is the “mainstay of Odisha’s economy,” which provides livelihood to more than 70 per cent of its population, Naveen Patnaik said, “In the past two decades, Odisha’s growth in the agricultural sector has been spectacular. From a mere importer of rice, Odisha has transformed itself into a major contributor to the country’s Public Distribution System.”

“This has become possible because of the use of technology and adequate supply of input,” he added.

Naveen Patnaik stressed the importance of uninterrupted fertiliser supply, stating, “Fertiliser being a major input to agriculture production, its smooth supply is very crucial for crop growth during Kharif. The farmers of Odisha are now facing a major problem in obtaining urea during this ongoing Kharif season.”

Naveen Patnaik expressed concern over the crisis, saying, “Short supply of urea along with its black marketing and adulteration is a major concern for our farmers now at the start of the Kharif season. In many districts, particularly in tribal regions, the farmers are on an agitation path due to the non-availability of urea. If not addressed timely, it may cause serious disruption of farm activities which will impact production and also affect the livelihood of farmers.”

He also questioned the Odisha government’s handling of the situation, pointing out that although it claims to have 7.94 lakh tonnes of urea, farmers continue to face shortages.

“Urea is being sold illegally at a higher price than the government-approved rate across Odisha,” Naveen Patnaik noted.

Alleging irregularities in distribution, he said, “MARKFED, the government’s designated distribution agency, is supplying subsidised fertilisers to private traders instead of farmers. Despite lower fertiliser use in Odisha, supply chain mismanagement and corruption have pushed our farmers to the edge.”

Naveen Patnaik also raised concern over the delay in the Talcher fertiliser plant.

“The foundation stone was laid in 2018, and it was promised to be functional in 36 months. But seven years later, it still remains non-operational,” he said.

Calling for strict measures, he added, “Need of the hour is immediate crackdown on black marketing and punishment of guilty dealers and officials associated with fertiliser distribution through cooperative societies.”

In this context, Naveen Patnaik said, “I would like to request you to take necessary steps for adequate supply of urea to Odisha during this Kharif season in the larger interest of the farming community.”

12 illegal Bangladeshi nationals deported by Delhi Police amid crackdown

New Delhi, Dec 31 (IANS) The Delhi Police have deported 12 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the national capital without any valid documents, an official said.

To address growing concerns about the unauthorised presence of migrants, notably Bangladeshi nationals, in the capital, the Delhi Police have been conducting several targeted operations, including verification drives and joint inspections throughout the South-East district.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East Delhi), Ravi Kumar Singh, has said that a police team in the district is continuously searching for illegal Bangladeshi nationals. The Delhi police team has so far arrested 12 Bangladeshi nationals illegally residing in the national capital.”

After investigating nearly 1,200 people, 12 illegal Bangladeshis were nabbed and the Delhi Police have sent all of them to detention camps. The Delhi Police’s search operation is underway, DCP Singh added.

The first official deportation order was issued by the South-West Delhi Police, two weeks after the Lieutenant Governor (LG) Secretariat announced that they would be launching a special drive to locate and deport unauthorised and illegal immigrants in the city.

In a bid to combat the heavy influx of Bangladeshi immigrants, especially after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August, a special team, comprising officers from local police stations and special units, has been deployed to conduct thorough searches and gather intelligence to locate undocumented immigrants.

During the verification drive, door-to-door verifications were conducted almost 400 families were checked, and their documents were collected. Additionally, verification forms were sent to their respective addresses in West Bengal for verification. A special team was also constituted and sent to West Bengal for manual verification of suspects.

During the drive, the eight Bangladeshi nationals were identified, arrested and deported through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). Out of the ones deported, Bangladeshi national, Samsul Seikh, confessed that he left his residence in Dhaka and entered India undetected through dense forests. After a brief stay in India, he went back to Bangladesh and brought his wife Parina Begam along with their six children.

Upon further investigation, the police found out that they were from Bangladesh and had destroyed their Bangladeshi IDs to evade suspicion.

This latest verification drive is part of an ongoing effort to identify and deport more illegal migrants from Delhi in the coming days.

My only aim is to save BRS, says Kavitha

Hyderabad, May 30 (IANS) Days after making a sensational statement and launching a veiled attack on her brother and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao, MLC K. Kavitha said on Friday that she has no personal agenda and that her only aim is to save the party.

Kavitha also reiterated that the BRS should not lean towards the BJP.

In an informal chat with media persons in Mancherial, she contended that no party which aligned with the BJP has benefited.

The MLC said she will have to raise her voice against the attempts to merge the BRS with the BJP.

She reiterated that when she was in jail in the Delhi liquor policy case, a proposal was made to merge the BRS with the BJP, and she strongly opposed it. She said if she had agreed to the proposal, this would have meant confessing crime in the liquor case.

Stating that she is innocent in the case, Kavitha claimed that the court too has said the same thing.

Kavitha made it clear that she has no plans to float a new party and that her aim is to save the BRS.

She once again demanded that those who leaked her confidential letter to BRS President and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) should be identified and action should be taken against them.

KCR’s daughter stated she tried very hard to meet KCR. She said she got a chance but could not meet him.

She wanted to know why top BRS leaders did not respond to the issuance of notice to KCR by the P.C. Ghose Commission on Kaleshwaram.

She claimed that KCR always prioritised people over his family. Asserting that she wrote the letter to KCR out of deep anguish and to protect the party, she made it clear that she would not keep quiet if anyone targets KCR.

Once again defending her letter to KCR, she claimed that the concerns she mentioned in the letter are what people have been thinking all along.

Kavitha also slammed the BJP for resorting to illegal acts in the name of Operation Kagar against Maoists. She said that when CPI-Maoist General Secretary Nambala Keshav Rao was killed in the encounter, the BJP did not show humanity by handing his body to family members for the last rites.

Kavitha said, despite repeated appeals to stop Operation Kagar, the BJP government was continuing the killings.

Kavitha was in Mancherial to attend some private programmes. She also garlanded the statue of Telangana Thalli.
