Bihar cadre IPS officer arrested in Andhra’s Raghurama Krishna Raju torture case

Amaravati, Feb 23 (IANS) The Andhra Pradesh Police on Monday arrested IPS officer Sunil Nayak in Bihar in connection with the alleged custodial torture of current Deputy Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Assembly, K Raghurama Krishna Raju, in 2021 when YSRCP was in power.

Nayak, who had then served as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Andhra Pradesh, was arrested by a police team from Andhra Pradesh. Guntur district police confirmed the arrest.

He is being brought on a transit warrant to Guntur, where a case was registered against him and others.

Nayak, an IPS officer of Bihar cadre, had served in Andhra Pradesh on deputation.

After the change of government in 2024, Nayak returned to Bihar and is currently serving as Inspector General of the Fire Services Department.

Raghurama Krishna Raju, then an MP, was arrested for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the then Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He had alleged that he was tortured in police custody.

After the TDP-led coalition came to power in 2024, a case was registered against Jagan Mohan Reddy and others on a complaint by Raju.

In July 2024, police had registered an FIR against Jagan Mohan Reddy, three IPS officers and others on a complaint by Raju, who alleged that there was an attempt on his life during police custody.

Police registered the FIR against the then CID chief P.V. Sunil Kumar, then Intelligence Chief Seetharamanjaneyulu, then Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, Sunil Nayak, then Additional SP R. Vijaya Paul, then Superintendent of Government General Hospital Guntur, Dr Prabhavati and others.

Last year, police summoned Sunil Nayak for questioning in the case, but he failed to appear.

Raju was elected to the Lok Sabha on a YSR Congress Party ticket from Narsapuram in 2019, but he later became a rebel.

He was arrested on May 14, 2021, at his residence in Hyderabad for speaking against the government and allegedly instigating communal unrest in the state.

Raju said that though he was recuperating after cardiac surgery, he was neither medically examined nor produced before a court in Hyderabad. He alleged that he was bullied, physically pulled inside a police vehicle and forcibly taken to Guntur the same night.

He alleged that he was kept in the CB CID office and there was an attempt on his life during the police custody. He alleged that Sunil Kumar, Seetharamanjeyulu and others beat him with a rubber belt and a lathi and did not allow him to take medicines.

The complainant said that despite knowing pretty well that he had undergone bypass surgery, some persons sat on his chest and applied pressure, thereby attempting to kill him.

Thalassemia patient groups hail introduction of National Blood Transfusion Bill in Parliament

New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) Thalassemia patients on Friday hailed the introduction of the National Blood Transfusion Bill in Parliament and urged members to pass the life-saving bill at the earliest.

Earlier this month, during the Winter session of the Parliament, the National Blood Transfusion Bill, 2025, was proposed by MP Parshottambhai Rupala in Lok Sabha and by Dr Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade in Rajya Sabha.

The Bill aims to regulate the collection, testing, processing, storage, distribution, issuance, and transfusion of human blood and blood components, to ensure health protection and prevention of transfusion-transmissible diseases. It also calls for establishing national standards for safe blood collection, transfusion, and management and imposing penalties for non-compliance and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The main objective is to establish a National Blood Transfusion Authority with statutory powers to prescribe national standards for blood collection, processing, storage, and transfusion.

“For India’s thalassaemia community, which depends on safe, uninterrupted, and quality-assured blood transfusions for survival, this legislation marks a historic and long-awaited step forward,” said the Thalassaemia Patients Advocacy Group (TPAG).

“It reflects a coherent and serious parliamentary commitment to reforming one of India’s most under-regulated yet critical public health areas,” TPAG said, while urging the MPs to immediately pass the Bill.

For lakhs of patients who rely on blood as their lifeline, this reform offers hope for a safer, more accountable, and more efficient blood ecosystem.

A unified national framework will play a pivotal role in strengthening safety, quality assurance, accountability, and public trust.

“Strengthening the governance of blood transfusion services is essential for ensuring safety and public trust. I hope the proposed bill provides a much-needed, science-based framework to streamline standards and improve patient outcomes,” said Prof. N.K. Ganguly, former Director General, ICMR.

Anubha Taneja Mukherjee, Member Secretary of TPAG, noted that the advocacy group will submit detailed comments on the Bill, and strongly urged for the inclusion of patient representation in any body constituted under this framework.

The Federation of Indian Blood Donors Organizations (FIBDO) also commended the efforts made by the MPs to propose the critical Bill in the Parliament.

“We call upon all parliamentarians to unite in passing this bill, which holds the promise of saving countless lives and fortifying the very foundation of India’s healthcare system,” the FIBDO said in a statement.

Demand for ‘Khadi Tiranga’ soars in Varanasi ahead of Independence Day

Varanasi, Aug 13 (IANS) With Independence Day around the corner, preparations are in full swing across the country. The BJP’s nationwide ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign has added to the patriotic fervour, and its impact is clearly visible in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency of Varanasi, where the demand for Khadi-made flags has surged sharply.

Shopkeepers say the sales this year have outpaced those of previous years, as residents buy flags to hoist at their homes, offices, and shops.

Many are also purchasing them to carry during the Tiranga Yatra and participate in various Independence Day programmes.

The streets and markets of Varanasi are awash in saffron, white, and green, amplifying the festive mood.

Speaking to IANS, Virendra Kumar Mishra, Manager of the Regional Gandhi Ashram, said, “Our business is going really well. The youth are showing great interest in Khadi flags. We have a good supply to meet the demand.”

Pankaj Singh, a buyer said, “I came here especially to buy a Khadi flag. I love the feel of it, and I want to urge more young people to choose Khadi flags this Independence Day.”

Independence Day marks India’s liberation from British colonial rule after nearly two centuries of oppression.

The struggle for freedom culminated on August 15, 1947, a day dedicated to remembering the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters and ordinary citizens who united to reclaim the nation’s sovereignty.

The British presence in India began in 1619 when the East India Company set up its first trading post in Surat, Gujarat.

Following their victory at the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the Company seized control of large parts of the country, ruling for almost a century before governance shifted to the British Crown.

On August 15, 1947, India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, unfurled the Tricolour from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi and delivered his iconic ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech.

Since then, it has become a tradition for the sitting Prime Minister to hoist the national flag at the Red Fort every Independence Day, addressing the nation in honour of the occasion.

Union Home Minister to visit Jammu on Aug 31 to assess flood damage

Jammu, Aug 30 (IANS) Union Home Minister, Amit Shah will visit Jammu division for two days on August 31 and September 1 to assess the damage caused by the recent heavy floods in the region.

Official sources said HM Amit Shah will visit Jammu for two days to assess the damage caused by the recent floods and he will also visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine base camp Katra in Reasi district and Kishtwar.

The visit will be with the aim to assess the damage caused by the recent floods in which nearly 150 people including about 130 pilgrims were killed.

“The Union Home Minister will reach Jammu on August 31 evening and return to the union capital on September 1 evening. He will be accompanied by a team of Ministry of Home Affairs officials during the visit.

“In the evening of August 31, he will chair a high level meeting at the Raj Bhawan to assess the damage caused by the floods across Jammu region.

“Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will attend the meeting and brief the Home Minister about the damage caused, relief/rescue operations and restoration of infrastructure across the region”, sources said.

Massive damage to roads, bridges, civilian properties including houses, shops, crops, land, inundation of inhabited localities, disruption of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and Machail Mata Yatra was caused by heavy rain, cloudburst and landslides.

HM Amit Shah will meet pilgrims injured at Ardhkuwari en route to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine at the Narayana hospital in Katra town.

He will then take an aerial assessment of damage caused by the cloudburst followed by flashfloods at Chashoti in Kishtwar district, where 65 people majority of them Mata Yatra pilgrims, were killed and over 100 others injured in a massive cloudburst on August 14.

He will also visit some locations in Jammu district where flood caused heavy damage. The Union Home Minister will return to New Delhi in the evening on September 1.

There are expectations that the Central government could announce a major relief package for the affected people and the damaged infrastructure in the coming days.

What remains to be seen is whether HM Amit Shah announces a relief package during his upcoming visit to Jammu division or would it be announced after he makes on the ground assessment of the damage caused by the natural calamities.
