PM Modi reaches out to Bengal voters via open letter, promises state’s economic revival

Kolkata, Feb 23 (IANS) The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has commenced the mass distribution of an open letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, penned in Bengali and Hindi, among voters as part of its campaigning ahead of the high-stakes Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.

In the letter, the Prime Minister accuses the Mamata Banerjee-led government and the ruling Trinamool Congress of attempting to deprive people of benefits from centrally sponsored schemes. He also claims that, despite obstacles from the state administration, many residents have still gained from these programmes.

“Just a few months, the electoral fate of West Bengal will be decided. A structured decision on your part will decide the fate of the future generation in the state. The people of West Bengal are victims of deprivation. My heart is equally pained by that. Hence, from the core of my heart, I want to make a promise today. The promise is to rebuild a developed and prosperous West Bengal,” the letter states in its opening passage.

In subsequent paragraphs, the Prime Minister lists welfare and development schemes introduced since 2014 by the National Democratic Alliance government led by him, asserting that these initiatives have benefited people across sectors in the state despite what he describes as non-cooperation from the state government.

“In the post-Independence era, West Bengal was the heart of India’s economy. But today my heart bleeds because of the sick and worn-out condition of the state’s economy. West Bengal had continued to suffer for the last six decades because of the continuous misrule and encouragement of appeasement politics. On the one hand, the educated youths are forced to get settled elsewhere because of the lack of employment opportunities. On the other hand, the women of the state are in constant fear over the lack of safety against loss of dignity,” Modi wrote.

He also invokes the legacy of figures such as Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Rabindranath Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose, stating that the state which once produced such icons is now facing challenges including alleged illegal infiltration, concerns over women’s safety, and economic decline.

“But how long will you tolerate such things? A change is inevitable now. The livelihood of the people in other states has improved manifold now. Several people in those states have been elevated above the poverty level. The people of West Bengal deserve the same development. So let us get united to rebuild a developed West Bengal,” the PM says in the letter.

With the Deputy CM now holding this department, the government expects faster implementation and stronger monitoring of urban development schemes across the state.

Vijay Kumar Sinha is currently holding the Revenue, Land Reforms and Mining Ministry in the Bihar government.

At the same time, Dilip Jaiswal, former Bihar BJP president and the current Industry Minister, has been given charge of the Road Construction Department—one of the most significant infrastructure-related departments in the state.

Several large road and connectivity projects were launched during Nitin Nabin’s tenure, and ensuring their timely completion will now be a key responsibility for Jaiswal.

It is noteworthy that Nitin Nabin, an MLA of Bakipur assembly constituency, on Monday assumed the role of National Working President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In line with the BJP’s principle of “one person, one post” and considering his expanded organisational responsibilities at the national level, he tendered his resignation from the Bihar cabinet earlier today.

Delhi-NCR braces for heat after long spell of rain, air quality may see dip 

New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) After witnessing a prolonged pleasant weather on the back of incessant rains, the national capital and the National Capital Region (NCR) are headed for a dry spell in the coming days and are also likely to witness rising temperatures, with the lowest temperature recording a significant rise over the next few days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather is likely to be hot and humid with scant chances of rain over the next few days.

The skies may remain overcast with clouds, but the rain gods are unlikely to oblige, as happened in the past few months. On the contrary, the temperature is expected to rise and will also lead to humidity.

According to the Meteorological (MeT) Department, maximum temperature in NCR regions will be recorded between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius, and strong sunlight is also likely to bother people.

The air quality index, which remained exceedingly good in the past few months, is also likely to decline over the next few days, said weather experts.

Minimum temperature is expected to be between 24 and 25 degrees Celsius while the humidity level is likely to remain high, hovering around 55 to 75 per cent.

High humidity will bother people in the morning and evening, while the sunlight will be piercing enough during the daytime. It will be partly cloudy from September 10 to 12, but there is no possibility of rain.

On September 13, the sky will be generally cloudy; however, after that, the weather is likely to be clear on September 14 and 15.

The MeT Department further clarified that no warning has been issued during this period, but there is no possibility of heavy rain or thunderstorms.

The temperature in Delhi-NCR is likely to rise continuously over the next few days because rain is unlikely despite overcast skies.

The maximum temperature, which has already reached 34 degrees, will trouble people with humidity and sweat in the coming days.

As the effect of the Monsoon starts fading away by mid-September, one may not expect any rain relief from the hot weather in the coming days.

Punjab CM to honour 71 government teachers tomorrow

Chandigarh, Oct 4 (IANS) Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday said 71 government teachers will be honoured with the State Teacher Award 2025 at a ceremony in Sri Anandpur Sahib on Sunday (October 5).

This recognition aims to appreciate the dedication and outstanding contributions of these teachers to the state’s educational landscape.

Bains said the government takes pride in recognising the invaluable contributions of teachers, who shape young minds, making them the true architects of a brighter future.

Divulging the details about the state awards, the minister said 55 teachers will receive the State Teacher Award, with 34 from Senior Secondary and 21 from Primary Schools. Additionally, 10 dynamic teachers will be felicitated with the Young Teacher Award (six secondary and 4 primary teachers).

Three educators will be honoured with a Special Teacher Award, and three will receive an Administrative Award for their distinguished leadership. Each awardee will be presented with a medal, shawl and a certificate of merit by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who will be the chief guest of the state-level programme, he added.

The education sector has been making significant strides in the state government, Bains said, while adding that the state teacher award ceremony is a testament to the AAP government’s commitment to valuing and motivating educators, fostering a culture of excellence and dedication in the state’s education sector.

Notably, Punjab emerged as the top performer in the Rashtriya Parakh Sarvekshan 2024 (AKA- National Achievement Survey (NAS), showcasing its focus on learning outcomes and teacher training. Punjab has also become the first state across the country to introduce entrepreneurship as a main subject for Class XI students, aiming to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among students.

Furthermore, a significant number of students from government schools have qualified in competitive exams such as NEET and JEE Mains and Advanced, highlighting the sector’s progress.
