LoP Adhikari slams Bengal govt after video of civic volunteer beating truck driver goes viral

Kolkata, Feb 23 (IANS) After a purported video went viral where a civic volunteer engaged with West Bengal Police could be seen beating up a truck driver after he allegedly refused to pay extortion money, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, slammed the state government.

LoP Adhikari on Monday shared the purported video on his social media handle to highlight the incident.

The IANS however could not independently verify the contents of the video and therefore, cannot vouch for its authenticity.

In the social media post, Adhikari slammed the Mamata Banerjee government for what he claimed was “institutional corruption”.

“Police collecting money by stopping cars or trucks in the name of ‘naka’ checking in different parts of the state is now institutional corruption. If they do not want to pay that money, either a false case is filed or they are beaten or tortured.

“A class of civic volunteers or home guards do this work along with the police, they do not hesitate to beat up the driver. This video below is proof of that, although they do not have this right legally,” LoP Adhikari claimed in his post.

The BJP leader further alleged that the said incident took place on February 19 at Dankuni toll plaza in Hooghly district.

“The video below was taken by an injured truck driver and his assistant near the Dankuni Toll Plaza on February 19, 2026. In the video, see how a civic volunteer or home guard is beating the driver with a stick without any reason. If a truck driver breaks the law, there is a possibility of taking legal action against him, but no law in India has given the right to beat him like this,” he said.

Adhikari also demanded the administration to immediately identify this civic volunteer or home guard and take legal action against him as well as punitive action.

“But that will not be possible, because they are doing this kind of activity day after day with the covert help of the government or administration. Therefore, this Trinamool government needs to be removed immediately because this situation needs to change in the state,” he claimed.

Punjab launches campaign on ill-effects of stubble burning

Chandigarh, Sep 28 (IANS) In a decisive move towards addressing the concern of stubble burning and fostering sustainable agriculture practices, the Punjab government has unveiled an ambitious Information, Education and Communication (IEC) plan for Crop Residue Management (CRM), state Minister for Agriculture Gurmeet Singh Khudian said on Sunday.

He said the campaign aims to directly engage communities, students and farmers to drive a behavioural shift towards eco-friendly practices, thus promoting sustainable agriculture.

The minister said that to disseminate information, the department will deploy 50 publicity vans to broadcast informative messages in rural areas.

Additionally, 444 ‘Nukkad Nataks’ (street plays) will be organised to communicate the message in a culturally resonant manner.

Furthermore, 12,500 informative wall paintings will be created to highlight the benefits of Crop Residue Management (CRM) and the ill-effects of paddy straw burning.

Khudian said 3,333 village-level camps and 296 block-level camps will be organised to provide farmers with direct access to information, expert advice, and government schemes on Crop Residue Management (CRM), empowering them to adopt sustainable practices, besides mobilising 148 ASHA workers to conduct door-to-door awareness campaigns in villages, personalising the message for families.

Also, school students will be engaged through essay writing, painting, and debate competitions to instil environmental consciousness from a young age.

“The health of our soil and our people is our top priority. This year, we are not just focusing on providing machinery, but on winning the hearts and minds of our farming community. This massive outreach programme is a mass movement against stubble burning. We are going directly to the grassroots — to the villages, schools and homes — to educate, empower and encourage our farmers to become champions of crop residue management. Our goal is to ensure a cleaner, greener, and healthier Punjab for our future generations,” Khudian said, as per an official statement.

He said the campaign underscores the government’s firm commitment to addressing the challenge of air pollution.

Administrative Secretary (Agriculture) Basant Garg said that 1.58 lakh CRM machines have been provided to state farmers since 2018-19. He expressed confidence that proactive community engagement and mechanisation of the agriculture sector would lead to a further substantial reduction in stubble burning incidents this season.

UP’s ‘Viksit 2047’ campaign becomes mass movement with 57 lakh inputs

Lucknow, Oct 27 (IANS) The Uttar Pradesh government’s campaign “Samarth Uttar Pradesh – Viksit Uttar Pradesh @2047: Samriddhi Ka Shatabdi Parv Mahabhiyan” has transformed into a historic mass movement of public participation, as the state moves towards its goal of becoming a capable and developed state by 2047, an official has said.

The initiative has received more than 57 lakh feedback responses from citizens so far through the portal samarthuttarpradesh.up.gov.in.

As part of the campaign, nodal officers and intellectuals toured all 75 districts, engaging with citizens and sharing details of the state’s development journey. Inputs and suggestions were collected from students, teachers, traders, entrepreneurs, farmers, volunteer organisations, labour unions, media representatives and common citizens to shape Uttar Pradesh’s long-term development roadmap, a statement noted.

Of the over 57 lakh responses, around 45 lakh came from rural areas and 12 lakh from urban regions. About 28 lakh respondents are youth (below 31 years), 26 lakh are in the 31-60 age group, and nearly 3 lakh are senior citizens (above 60 years).

Among the sectors for which suggestions were received, 14.4 lakh responses relate to agriculture, 2.3 lakh to livestock and dairy, 2 lakh to industries, 1.6 lakh to IT and technology, 1.4 lakh to tourism, 11.4 lakh to rural development, 50,000 to infrastructure, 83,000 to balanced development, 4.4 lakh to social welfare, 3.9 lakh to urban development and health, 13.4 lakh to education and over 1 lakh to security-related issues.

Jaunpur (4.5 lakh), Sambhal (3.8 lakh), Ghazipur (2.5 lakh), Pratapgarh (1.8 lakh) and Bijnor (1.7 lakh) recorded the highest number of feedback submissions, while Etawah (20,000), Mahoba (26,000), Hapur (29,000), Gautam Buddha Nagar (29,000) and Lalitpur (30,000) received the lowest.

A wide network of interaction meetings and seminars was held from urban local bodies down to gram panchayats, including programmes in 214 municipal councils, 227 municipal seminars, 18 municipal corporations, 63 district councils, 556 town panchayats, 577 town conferences, 751 block-level meetings and around 50,000 gram panchayats.

Officials said these extensive engagements have strengthened communication and coordination among local citizens, public representatives and departments. Based on the feedback aligned with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of “Samarth Uttar Pradesh – Viksit Uttar Pradesh @2047”, the state government is now preparing a Vision Document aimed at collective and participatory development.

Lalu, Tejashwi join AIMPLB’s protest against Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Patna, assure support

Patna, March 26 (IANS) RJD chief Lalu Prasad and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav joined the nationwide protest by All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 in Patna.

Addressing the protesters at Gardanibagh, Tejashwi said: “We are standing with all of you with full strength in the fight for Muslims. Lalu Prasad has come to support you even in his ill state.”

He accused the central government of trying to “break the country and end democracy”, calling it an “attack” on the very fabric of the Constitution.

“Efforts are being made to end the Constitution. We are people who believe in the Constitution and the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb. At any cost, we will ensure this bill is not passed,” Tejashwi said.

Tejashwi shared that RJD legislators attempted to initiate a debate on the bill by bringing an adjournment motion in both the Bihar Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. However, the uproar led to the adjournment of the House proceedings.

“We are protesting everywhere against this ‘unconstitutional’ Waqf (Amendment) Bill – whether in Bihar Vidhan Sabha or the Legislative Council. Today, we demanded a discussion, but the House had to be adjourned,” he said.

Tejashwi also emphasised that when the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) team visited Bihar, RJD leaders opposed the bill.

“When the JPC team came to Bihar, our party members strongly presented their views that this bill should not be passed. If any bill goes against the Constitution, everyone must stand against it,” he added.

“It is unfortunate that some parties are supporting this bill just to remain in power. No amount of condemnation is enough for this,” he said in an indirect comment on Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).

Lalu’s public appearance, despite his health condition, reflects RJD’s strategy to consolidate its Muslim-Yadav (MY) voter base ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
