Trinamool-backed BLOs hurl shoes at Bengal LoP outside CEO office in Kolkata

Kolkata, Feb 24 (IANS) Trinamool Congress-backed Adhikar Raksha Committee, a representative body for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), members were accused of throwing shoes at the West Bengal Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari after he reached the office of State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Kolkata on Tuesday.

LoP Adhikari and a BJP delegation came to meet the state CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal as per the pre-arranged schedule.

As soon as the LoP reached the office premises, the BLOs intensified their protest.

Although, the police had already barricaded the area, an atmosphere of tension was created.

Allegedly, some angry BLOs threw shoes at LoP Adhikari and started insulting him by taking his name.

The protesters alleged that the LoP was misleading the Election Commission of India (ECI) due to which electoral poll workers such as the BLOs are facing harassment.

Eyewitnesses said that several shoes were also seen flying in the air.

Due to the incident, a situation of extreme chaos was created in front of the state CEO’s office.

The police brought the situation under control and further strengthened the security cordon.

Although, the upcoming Assembly polls in West Bengal have not been officially announced yet, tension is gradually increasing in Bengal politics over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Speaking to media persons after meeting the West Bengal CEO, LoP Adhikari criticised the police for failing to control the situation.

“If this is the situation in Kolkata, especially in a place near Raj Bhavan and West Bengal Assembly, then imagine the law and order situation in districts across West Bengal. The police have become an extension of the Trinamool Congress here. They (state police) are deliberately allowing the BLOs to continue their protest outside the state CEO office and create disturbance,” the LoP said.

Meanwhile, LoP Adhikari also filed a complaint with the west Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal regarding several matters.

He alleged that the Nadia District Magistrate, Aneesh Dasgupta, has been making attempts to include names of illegal immigrants in the voter list of the state.

He also asked how could the former state Chief Secretary Manoj Pant be present in the meeting of Election Commission officials at the Calcutta High Court on Monday.

4G network will reach every village by June 2026: Jyotiraditya Scindia

Guna, Jan 9 (IANS) Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, said on Friday that the 4G network connectivity will cover the entire rural parts of the country in June this year.

The Union Minister added that there are more than 120 crore mobile users in the country and the reach of 4G network in every corner will strengthen the ‘Digital India’ vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Union Minister Scindia made this announcement while addressing an event in Shivpuri district, under the Guna Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh.

“The country is witnessing tremendous growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 4G network will reach every village across the country by June 2026,” he said.

On this occasion, Union Minister Scindia inaugurated a sub-post office in Badarwas area in Guna, and congratulated the residents for this significant development.

He appealed the people to open their bank accounts in the post-office to avail benefits being provided from the state and the Centre.

“This sub-post office, equipped with modern facilities will ensure your pension, subsidy and savings, while our postman will become a strong link in empowering rural India, making it ‘self-reliant’ and connecting to Digital India,” Union Minister Scindia said while congratulating the resident of Badarwas for this significant development in the region.

While addressing the event, the Union Minister also shared that the India Post Department recently had signed two agreements with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, which will pave the way for economic empowerment in rural parts of India, especially for women and farmers.

“One agreement is for real-time monitoring of fertiliser and transparency in its distribution system, while the second is for making women economically empowered,” he added.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Jyotiraditya Scindia in New Delhi on January 7.

Under the agreement, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Department of Posts will establish a nationwide logistics mechanism for the transportation of pesticide, seed and fertiliser samples from across the country to designated laboratories.

India Post will provide all of the logistical support from the point of collection through to final delivery for pesticide, seed and fertiliser inspectors.

The partnership is part of the PAN-India online pesticide, seed and fertiliser quality management system, which is being developed by the Centre for Research and Industrial Staff Performance (CRISP).

Defence Minister, CDS review security preparedness with Army leadership at Commanders’ Conference

New Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan held a crucial interaction on Saturday with the top leadership of the Indian Army during the ongoing Army Commanders’ Conference, focussing on operational preparedness and future challenges.

The high-level review emphasised strengthening combat capabilities, infrastructure development, and readiness of the Armed Forces to effectively deal with any security situation in the region.

According to a post shared by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) on X, “Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, engaged with the apex leadership of the Indian Army in the Army Commanders’ Conference.

The Raksha Mantri and CDS reviewed the prevailing security situation in the region and discussed measures to enhance the future preparedness of the Armed Forces for any eventuality.

During the interaction, they were briefed on the operational readiness and key initiatives undertaken to strengthen combat capability and infrastructure in the sector.

“The CDS also interacted with the officers and jawans in a candid interaction,” HQ IDS posted on X.

The Defence Minister’s meeting with senior Army commanders comes at a time when the Indian Armed Forces are undergoing a significant phase of modernization and structural reforms aimed at enhancing jointness and operational synergy among the three services. The discussions also focused on the integration of advanced technologies, indigenization under ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, and strategies to ensure that the Army remains combat-ready across diverse terrains and operational environments.

Earlier, on Friday, HQ IDS had shared another post on X, stating, “Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, CDS graced the second edition of Indian Navy’s biannual Commanders’ Conference 2025.”

“Addressing the Conference, the CDS acknowledged the exceptional professionalism, unwavering resolve and operational prowess of Team Navy in maintaining Combat Readiness which has brought immense pride to the nation,” HQ IDS posted on X.

The CDS also engaged with senior naval leadership on jointness, integrated operations, and India’s maritime strategic priorities in the Indian Ocean Region.

“Together with #CNS, the focus remains on building a #CombatReady, #CredibleForce & #FutureReady #AatmanirbharNavy by 2047, reinforcing the vision of a #FutureReady force,” the post added.

The back-to-back engagements of the Defence Minister and CDS with the Army and Navy leadership aim towards maintaining a combat-ready, credible, and future-ready Defence force capable of safeguarding India’s strategic interests on all fronts.

Andhra: Jagan to go ahead with visit to Palnadu district despite police curbs

Amaravati, June 17 (IANS) YSR Congress Party President and former chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will visit Palnadu district on June 18 to console the family of a party functionary who committed suicide due to alleged police harassment.

Despite police imposing restrictions, Jagan Mohan Reddy will go ahead with his visit to Rentapalla in Palnadu district to console the family members of YSRCP leader and deputy sarpanch Nagamalleswara Rao.

YSRCP leaders said that Jagan will travel by road from his Tadepalli residence in Amaravati to Rentapalla. After consoling the family of Nagamalleswara Rao, Jagan will unveil his statue.

The opposition party alleged that the TDP-led coalition government is trying to create hurdles for their leader’s visit. It made it clear that the former chief minister will go ahead with his visit.

The YSRCP has condemned the indifference of the police in giving permission to Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit to Rentapalla.

Speaking to the media after meeting the Superintendent of Police at Palnadu on Tuesday, former minister Vidadala Rajini, former MLAs Kasu Mahesh Reddy and Gopireddy Srinivasa Reddy, and Sattenapalli YSRCP in-charge Gajjala Sudheer Bhargav Reddy stated that the government is misusing police to block Jagan’s visit under the pretext of security concerns.

The leaders revealed that police were strangely allowing only 100 people to accompany Jagan, citing security. Despite this, they asserted that YS Jagan will go ahead with the visit, regardless of whether police permission is granted. They made it clear that the convoy will directly reach the bereaved family’s house without any disruption. They emphasised that once YS Jagan gives his word, he never backs down, and he will meet the family even if he has to go alone.

They also stated that the party cannot stop people from coming, as Jagan is always with people. “The police have been harassing him in a multitude of ways to stop him as the coalition government is conspiring to foil his visit, but he will be in Rentapalla of Sattenapalli mandal,” they said.

They alleged that the coalition government is scared of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s popularity.

Palnadu police imposed restrictions on Jagan’s visit in view of the stone pelting during his recent visit to Prakasam district. Jagan had accused Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu of deliberately provoking people against his visit to Podili in Prakasam district.

He had visited Podili to meet distressed Tobacco farmers and offer them support, as they have been denied fair prices.

“Over 40,000 farmers and locals joined me in solidarity. To divert attention from the issue at hand, Chandrababu Naidu connived to send about 40 TDP workers to disrupt the meeting and provoke violence by pelting stones along our route. Thankfully, the farmers and public showed great restraint and did not retaliate against the acute assaults by TDP goons,” Jagan Mohan Reddy wrote on the social media platform ‘X’.
