Assam polls: BJP’s 10-days mass outreach programme to kick-start tomorrow

Guwahati, Feb 27 (IANS) The BJP will on Saturday kick-start Jana Ashirwad Yatra – an outreach programme aiming to connect with masses before the upcoming Assembly polls in Assam.

The 10-day yatra will end on March 9, covering several districts in the state.

The senior ministers of the state government along with top leaders of the BJP will attend this programme in different districts.

Referring to the upcoming Jana Ashirwad Yatra, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier said the outreach programme is not merely aimed at highlighting the achievements of the state government, but also at connecting directly with people across the state.

“The Jana Ashirwad Yatra of BJP Assam is not just about sharing the achievements of our government, but also about seeking the blessings of the people,” he said.

He added that the yatra provides an opportunity for party leaders to listen to the aspirations and concerns of citizens at the grassroots level, helping shape policies and programmes in line with public expectations.

Sarma said the BJP government’s initiatives in areas such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, employment generation and social welfare have laid a strong foundation for Assam’s growth.

At the same time, he stressed that safeguarding the state’s identity and demographic balance remains central to the party’s vision.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that people of Assam would continue to support the BJP, acknowledging its efforts to ensure stability, development and protection of the state’s interests.

“The trust and blessings of the people are our biggest strength. With their support, we are committed to building a secure, developed and culturally vibrant Assam,” CM Sarma said.

The Jana Ashirwad Yatra is expected to cover several districts in the coming days, ahead of key political engagements in the state.

Sarma also asserted that BJP along with its allies are at a very formidable position in at least 103 Assembly seats which are going for polls in the next couple of months.

Sarma told reporters here, “The BJP, along with our alliance partners, is in a very strong position in at least 103 out of 126 Assembly seats. I cannot predict the number of seats that we will win but the opposition parties have very little presence in these seats.”

Chandigarh, Oct 7 (IANS) Marking a significant leap towards transforming green energy and agricultural landscape, the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, to establish a pilot demonstration project for the production of green hydrogen from biomass, particularly paddy straw.

This strategic partnership will pave the way for a sustainable and thriving future for the state by turning the challenge of paddy stubble management into a lucrative opportunity for green energy production.

The pact, which was signed by the PEDA’s Chief Executive Officer, Neelima and the Registrar of IISc, was formally exchanged between Neelima and Prof S. Dasappa of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER), IISc, in the presence of Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Naik at the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Bio-Energy Research held at the Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) in Kapurthala.

Congratulating the PEDA for this transformative collaboration, state New & Renewable Energy Sources Minister Aman Arora stated the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is engineering an energy revolution. He emphasised that the collaboration with IISc underscores the state’s commitment to clean energy innovation, leveraging agricultural waste to produce green hydrogen.

This initiative, he noted, is crucial for creating a circular economy that empowers farmers, cleans the environment and fuels industries with carbon-free energy, ultimately building a robust, pristine and energy-independent Punjab.

Arora highlighted that this collaboration will establish a pioneering facility to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of green hydrogen production from agricultural residues.

The project will tackle stubble burning, improve air quality and boost the rural economy by creating new revenue streams for farmers and generating employment opportunities in the green energy sector. This initiative will significantly advance India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and support states’ ambitious renewable energy goals, he added.

Congress criticises 9 years of BJP rule in Assam; terms it ‘inefficient, incompetent’

Guwahati, Feb 24 (IANS) The Congress on Monday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Assam over several issues, including the recent attack on its party MP Rakibul Hussain, while terming the nine years of the BJP rule in the northeastern state as “inefficient and incompetent”.

Jitendra Singh, the in-charge of the Congress in Assam, said: “As Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins his two-day visit to Assam, the state has already experienced two major incidents of violence.

“We witnessed how BJP thugs were punching and kicking Assam police, and the police did not arrest them. Four days ago, our Lok Sabha MP, Rakibul Hussain, was brutally attacked by thugs in broad daylight in a busy marketplace, and the goons even attacked the police security officers and tried to snatch their weapons.”

He claimed that the state Congress president Bhupen Borah was also attacked in broad daylight.

“This sums up the BJP rule in Assam for 9 years – corrupt, inefficient, incompetent, rogue and divisive. The state is in deep crisis,” Singh added.

The Congress leader also claimed that the unemployment is at the peak during BJP’s regime and this is one of the reasons why law and order situation has deteriorated in Assam.

The opposition party also targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the issue of corruption, and raised several questions regarding the business ventures of the CM’s wife.

In a statement, the Congress said: “It is intriguing how Assam CM’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma becomes a business tycoon in just 4 years! She has allegedly acquired multiple tea gardens.”

The party said “additionally, she has expanded her business empire by acquiring a news portal, opening a leading fast food outlet, and establishing an international school. Her company reportedly received a central subsidy of Rs 10 crore. It is now common knowledge in the state that massive land scams allegedly involving the Chief Minister’s family members have taken place”.

Singh further said that even as rathole coal mining was banned by the National Green Tribunal, the illegal business was going on in several places in Assam that resulted in the death of nine labourers in Umrangso in Dima Hasao district.

“Kanika Hojai, wife of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa, is accused of running an illegal coal mine in Umrangso and has gone into hiding. A 2021 report by Justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey found rampant illegal mining in Digboi forest division, causing multiple fatal accidents and involving local authority complicity,” the Congress leader added.

Nirmala Sitharaman on two-day visit to Karnataka from tomorrow

Bengaluru, Oct 14 (IANS) Union Finance Nirmala Sitharaman will be on a two-day visit to Karnataka, beginning Wednesday, during which she will participate in various programmes.

She will arrive in Karnataka on Wednesday and participate in various programmes across Kalaburagi, Bidar, Koppal, Ballary, Raichur, and Yadgir districts.

During her visit, she will interact with farmers and farmer cooperatives. She will also visit agricultural training centers and agricultural product processing centres to hold discussions.

Taking to social media X, on Tuesday, FM Sitharaman stated, “Travelling through Kalyan Karnataka from tomorrow, shall participate in visiting the various Farmers’ Training and Common facility centres for Agro Processing which have commenced production.”

“Using funds from my Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), have set up one unit in each of the following seven districts.

Vijayanagara: Peanut Butter, Roasted Peanut, Peanut Chikki, De-seeded Tamarind blocks and Tamarind Pulp (Peanut- 200kgph; Tamarind- 100 kgph); Ballari: Chilli Flakes and Chilli Powder (Chilli – 250 kgph); Koppal: Fruit Pulp, Fruit Juices and Amchur Powder (Fruit – 500 kgph)

Raichur: Chila Premix, Channa and Tuar Dal Mill (Dal- 350 kgph); Yadgir: Peanut Butter, Roasted Peanut and Groundnut Oil (300 kgph); Kalaburagi: Millet Flakes, Millet Pops, Millet Flour and Whole Millets (Millet- 500 kgph); Bidar: Soybean tofu and flavoured soy milk (Soyabean- 300 kgph)”

She further stated, “During this visit, shall inaugurate manufacturing units in four districts of Vijayanagara, Bellary, Koppal and Raichur.”

“Looking forward to meet the farmers, farmer producer organisations and their families who will benefit from these Training and Common Facility Centres for Agro Processing, set up across the seven districts of Kalyana Karnataka,” she underlined.

She has also put out a social media post on X in Kannada, announcing her trip to Karnataka.

Kalyana Karnataka region is considered as most backward region in the state with social, economical and academical parameters remaining at the bottom. Despite the region’s rich natural resources, it remains the least developed in Karnataka. The government has approved a separate secretariat for the Kalyana Karnataka region to streamline development efforts.

Kalaburagi, one of the districts in Kalyan Karnataka region is the native of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge. Kalaburagi district had the lowest SSLC pass percentage in Karnataka for the 2024-25 academic year, with a pass rate of 42.43 per cent. This result placed it at the bottom of the state’s performance ranking.

Priyank Kharge, son of Mallikarjun Kharge, is in-charge Minister for Kalaburagi district and he also holds Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) portfolio along with IT and BT.
