BS Yediyurappa turns 84, congratulatory messages pour in

Bengaluru, Feb 27 (IANS) BJP Central Parliamentary Committee Member B. S. Yediyurappa celebrated his 84th birthday on Friday, with leaders cutting across party lines, supporters and admirers extending greetings and participating in events organised in his honour.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa began the day by offering special prayers at a Lord Ganesh temple in Ravindranagar. He also fed calves as part of the traditional rituals performed on his birthday.

A felicitation programme has been organised in the evening, where Union Minister Pralhad Joshi is scheduled to deliver a congratulatory address.

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H. D. Kumaraswamy extended heartfelt birthday wishes, describing Yediyurappa as a respected leader and senior statesman.

In his message, Kumaraswamy prayed that Yediyurappa be blessed with good health, long life, and the strength to continue serving the people for many more years.

BJP MP and former CM Basavaraj Bommai also extended his greetings, calling Yediyurappa one of the finest and most visionary leaders the state has seen.

Bommai said Yediyurappa’s pro-farmer and pro-people struggles helped him win the hearts of the people, and his initiatives for children, youth and women continue to inspire administrators.

He also noted that Yediyurappa’s contribution in building and strengthening the BJP in Karnataka and serving as Chief Minister four times remains unforgettable.

Speaking on the occasion, BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra said Yediyurappa rose in politics without any political background and played a crucial role in expanding the BJP from the grassroots level.

After moving from Mandya district and establishing his political base in Shikaripura in Shivamogga district, Yediyurappa worked tirelessly to build the party and expand its reach to rural areas, breaking the perception that the BJP was limited to urban centres.

He said the people of Shikaripura take pride in Yediyurappa’s achievements, as he began his political career from the constituency.

He added that after discussions with BJP MP B. Y. Raghavendra and other leaders, it was decided to organise the felicitation programme in Shikaripura.

Vijayendra also noted that although Yediyurappa has traditionally avoided celebrating his birthday, events were organised this year in response to requests from supporters and well-wishers.

Celebrations and greetings were held across Bengaluru and other parts of the state, reflecting Yediyurappa’s long-standing influence and popularity in Karnataka politics.

Yediyurappa, a four-time Chief Minister, is widely credited with establishing the BJP as a major political force in Karnataka and leading the party to power for the first time in South India since Independence.

Protocol row: Kumaraswamy refused to use ex-MP’s car, says Karnataka govt

Bengaluru, Jan 6 (IANS) The Karnataka government on Monday dismissed Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H. D. Kumaraswamy’s objections on the issue of protocol violation.

Kumaraswamy had expressed his displeasure after he was not provided with the official vehicle and was asked to use former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh’s car.

State Minister for Agriculture N. Chaluvarayaswamy, said on Monday that the Congress government finds it hard to believe Kumaraswamy’s allegations. “Kumaraswamy refused to use the car of former Mandya MP Sumalatha Ambareesh. What can we do? We don’t understand why Kumaraswamy is unwilling to use the vehicle which was used by former MP and senior BJP leader Sumalatha Ambareesh,” the minister said.

“We have never refused to provide a car to Kumaraswamy. He himself rejected the vehicle offered by the government,” Chaluvarayaswamy claimed.

The state Minister further explained, “It took us a year to get a new car. I used the old vehicle utilized by the former minister until I got the new one. When I was an MP, I used the car that had been used by the late former MP Ambareesh. Later, I received a new car. It is customary to provide the old car to the new MP initially, and subsequently, the cabinet grants approval for new vehicles.”

Speaking to the media in Mandya on Saturday, Union Minister Kumaraswamy stated, “The state government has not provided a car till now. As a result, I am travelling in a vehicle assigned to the Central government, which I received from the Heavy Industries Department.”

When asked whether he felt neglected by the state government, Kumaraswamy replied that the Congress-led Karnataka government should address the issue.

Sumalatha Ambareesh, a senior BJP leader, previously represented the Mandya Lok Sabha seat, which is now held by Union Minister Kumaraswamy. Sumalatha had registered a resounding victory against Kumaraswamy’s son, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, in the 2019 elections.

Minister Chaluvarayaswamy was earlier the right-hand man of former CM Kumaraswamy. However, he quit the JD(S) party and joined the Congress party questioning the dominance of former PM H.D. Deve Gowda’s family members.

‘Fake CBI raid’: Woman, 2 aides held for duping relative of Rs 3 lakh, jewellery

New Delhi, July 20 (IANS) A woman private tutor and two of her associates were arrested for duping her relative in Delhi’s Wazirabad by posing as “CBI officials” and escaping with cash, ornaments and Rs 3 lakh, the Delhi Police said on Sunday.

The 22-year-old woman, a resident of Karawal Nagar, and her accomplices – Keshav Prasad, 28, and Vivek Singh, 20, – targeted her distant relative Israt Jameel’s house on July 10 around 7.30 p.m. and “searched” the premises by posing as “CBI officials from Okhla Branch”, the police said.

“They were arrested on July 18. The woman and Keshav Prasad were apprehended from Mussoorie and, at their instance, Vivek Singh was arrested from Haridwar,” said a police official.

They were booked by Wazirabad Police under penal provisions for cheating, mischief and theft involving preparations for causing death, injury or restraint, the police said.

During the incident, the fraudsters told the victim’s family members that they had a search warrant against them. When the family members asked for a copy of the FIR and search warrant, the accused scolded them and used harsh words, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North District) Raja Banthia, in a statement, said one of the fraudsters, who were all dressed in while shirts and black trousers, introduced himself as Sunil Dubey and ordered the family members to sit in one corner of the room while the other two searched the house.

“The other two started searching the house. They broke the lock of the almirah and took out all the gold and silver jewellery of the complainant’s wife and Rs 3 lakh,” he said.

Before the accused left the house, complainant Israt Jameel sought a seizure memo enlisting the jewellery and cash collected by them and inquired about the procedure to get these articles back, the police said.

In response, the fraudsters wrote a note and signed on the notebook of the complainant’s daughter in fake names and escaped with jewellery and cash, the police said.

The DCP said the Israt Jameel got suspicious and called the police, but before they could arrive, the imposters escaped.

DCP Banthia said Rs 1.75 lakh out of the cheated money, 29 gold/silver ornaments, a motorcycle used in the crime and clothes worn by the accused at the time of the offence have been recovered.

He said during interrogation, the fraudsters said that after the incident, they went to Haridwar and visited Mussoorie, continuously changing their locations to escape from the police. “The fraudsters had spent some of the money on their luxuries,” the DCP said.

Sharing profiles of the accused, the police said Keshav Prasad runs a shop of food supplements in Haridwar, and Vivek Singh is unemployed and enrolled as a student in an open school.

The woman is a graduate and takes private tuitions of school children in Karawal Nagar in north Delhi, the police said.

High-frequency indicators suggest domestic economic activity holding up in Q3 FY26: RBI

New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS) High-frequency indicators suggest that domestic economic activity is holding up in Q3 FY26, although there are some emerging signs of weakness in a few leading indicators, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Friday.

In the monetary policy committee (MPC) minutes, the Central Bank said that GST rationalisation and festival-related spending supported domestic demand during October-November.

“Rural demand continues to be robust while urban demand is recovering steadily. Investment activity remains healthy with private investment gaining steam on the back of expansion in non-food bank credit and high-capacity utilisation,” said the RBI.

On the supply side, agricultural growth is supported by healthy kharif crop production, higher reservoir levels and better rabi crop sowing. Manufacturing activity continues to improve, and the services sector is maintaining a steady pace.

“Looking ahead, domestic factors such as healthy agricultural prospects, continued impact of GST rationalisation, benign inflation, healthy balance sheets of corporates and financial institutions and congenial monetary and financial conditions should continue to support economic activity. Continuing reform initiatives would further facilitate growth,” according to the MPC minutes.

On the external front, services exports are likely to remain strong, while merchandise exports face some headwinds.

“External uncertainties continue to pose downside risks to the outlook, while speedy conclusion of ongoing trade and investment negotiations present upside potential. Taking all these factors into consideration, real GDP growth for 2025-26 is projected at 7.3 per cent,” said the Reserve Bank.

The next meeting of the MPC is scheduled during February 4-6, 2026.

In India, real gross domestic product (GDP) registered a six-quarter high growth of 8.2 per cent in Q2 FY26, underpinned by resilient domestic demand amid global trade and policy uncertainties.

Economic activity during the first half of the financial year benefited from income tax and goods and services tax (GST) rationalisation, softer crude oil prices, front-loading of government capital expenditure, and facilitative monetary and financial conditions supported by benign inflation.
