Protests in Kashmir over killing of Khamenei; leaders appeal for calm

Srinagar, March 1 (IANS) A large number of people across the Kashmir Valley, especially in Srinagar city, carried out peaceful protests against the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli bombing, as local political and religious leaders condemned the killing while appealing for peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

Protesters came out in processions shouting slogans against the US and Israel as the security forces maintained vigil to ensure that anti-national and anti-social elements were prevented from creating a law and order situation.

The demonstrations erupted spontaneously in different parts of Srinagar city, Budgam district and other parts of the valley.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reacted to the development by saying, “I’m deeply concerned about the unfolding developments in Iran, including the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”

He appealed to all communities to remain calm, “uphold peace, and avoid any actions that could lead to tension or unrest”.

“We must also ensure that those who are mourning in Jammu and Kashmir are allowed to grieve peacefully. The police and administration should exercise utmost restraint and refrain from using force or restrictive measures. The Government of Jammu & Kashmir is in close coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to ensure the safety and well-being of J&K residents, including students, currently in Iran,” he added.

Former CM and National Conference (NC) president, Farooq Abdullah and other leaders of the party condemned the US-Israeli attack on Iran.

NC headquarters said on its official X, “Party President Dr Farooq Abdullah along with Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq and Senior Leader Agha Syed Mehmood Al-Moosavi have expressed profound anguish over the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran. Dr. Abdullah has strongly denounced the act, describing it as a tragic and destabilising development with serious implications for peace and stability in the region. He stated that such incidents deepen uncertainty and grief, and underscored the urgent need for wisdom, restraint, and adherence to principles of justice and international law.”

“Dr. Abdullah has appealed for calm and urged the administration to handle the situation with sensitivity and discretion, ensuring that those who wish to mourn are able to do so respectfully, without fear or undue restrictions, while maintaining public order,” the post further read.

Former CM and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, said, “Today marks a deeply tragic & shameful point in history with Israel & USA boasting about the killing of Iran’s beloved leader Ayatollah Ali Khanenei. What’s more disgraceful & shocking is the explicit & implicit support given by Muslim countries who chose convenience & expedience over conscience. History will stand testaments to who fought for justice & who helped the oppressors. Prayers with the people of Iran. May Allah grant them strength & victory over forces of tyranny & injustice.”

Senior religious leader and chief cleric of Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said, “Deeply saddened and outraged at the brutal killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei by the US and Israel that has shaken the Muslim world. The people of JK collectively condemn this brutality and the ongoing aggression against Iran, as well as the massacre of innocent girl students in Minab. In this hour of immense sorrow, our hearts beat with the resilient people of Iran. May Allah grant strength to the oppressed, elevate the martyrs, and bring swift justice to those responsible for this.”

He said this is a “moment for the Ummah to rise above divisions and stand united and register our protest and solidarity against this killing and the continued aggression in the region”.

“Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) has called for a complete strike tomorrow. We urge the people to observe it with unity, dignity, and complete peacefulness,” he said.

No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in the Valley so far.

Assam CM targets Gaurav Gogoi over children’s British citizenship

Guwahati, Feb 8 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a fresh political attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi over the British citizenship of his two children, saying the issue raised serious questions about the personal choices made by a public representative.

Talking to IANS, CM Sarma drew a comparison with senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, noting that despite her Italian origin, she did not insist that her children acquire Italian citizenship.

“Even Sonia Gandhi never insisted that her son and daughter take Italian citizenship. But here, the Jorhat MP ensured that both his children became British citizens,” the Chief Minister said.

Sarma alleged that the decision reflected a deeper mindset and could not be brushed aside as a private matter when it involved a sitting Member of Parliament. He claimed that Gogoi had voluntarily surrendered the Indian citizenship of one of his children, a move which, according to him, warranted public scrutiny.

“This is not about personal attacks. When you are a Member of Parliament, your actions and choices are subject to public debate,” Sarma said, adding that issues related to citizenship assume greater significance in a country like India, particularly when national security concerns are under discussion.

The Chief Minister further alleged that there were inconsistencies in public statements made earlier on the citizenship status of Gogoi’s children, and said these issues had emerged during the course of an ongoing probe into alleged foreign links involving the Congress MP’s family.

Sarma also said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi must take action against Gaurav Gogoi, claiming that the deputy leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha had surrendered the citizenship of his children.

The Chief Minister on Sunday also raised serious allegations that Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, who had visited Pakistan, went digitally silent for at least 10 days, while the interior ministry of Pakistan also changed the visa permissions of the Congress leader.

Sarma said, “When Gaurav Gogoi went to Pakistan for a visit in 2013, his permission to visit certain cities was changed by Pakistan’s interior ministry, and the Congress MP went absolutely silent on digital platforms. This raises several questions about his activities during that period.”

According to the Chief Minister, Gogoi might have undergone some “training” sessions while he was staying in Islamabad for 10 days.

“The person changed completely after those 10 days of silence. It was December 2013 when Gogoi visited Pakistan, and he became a Lok Sabha MP in 2014. Once he entered Parliament, he started asking sensitive questions related to national security, and this sequence of events strengthens my doubt that the Congress leader was brainwashed by Pakistan’s intelligence agencies during the visit,” the CM said.

Sites for 100 Atal Canteens identified ahead of launch next month: Delhi CM

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday that the government has identified 100 sites for opening Atal Canteens to sell nutritious meals to people for just Rs 5, and the scheme is likely to be inaugurated on December 25.

She said that after the first phase of opening 100 canteens on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the scheme is going to be extended to other colonies as well.

The Chief Minister said the Atal Thali Yojana aims to ensure that no citizen of the capital goes hungry. This is not merely a food distribution scheme, but a determined effort to uphold dignity and strengthen social equality across Delhi.

She added that the responsibility for operating these centres is being entrusted to selected organisations.

She said that the initiative will not only serve as a source of support for economically weaker sections but also strengthen the principles of social equality and dignity.

CM Rekha Gupta stated that an inter-departmental committee has already approved recommendations regarding site selection, menu, distribution system, and management framework.

The menu of these economical canteens will include dal-chawal (lentils and rice), vegetables, and roti (bread), she said.

At each centre, 500 meals will be served in the morning and 500 in the evening, and the government will provide subsidies to maintain food quality.

The Chief Minister said that the entire food distribution process will be operated through a digital token system to eliminate any possibility of irregularities. “Manual coupons will not be permitted,” she said.

All distribution centres will be equipped with CCTV cameras, enabling real-time monitoring through DUSIB’s digital platform, she said.

Each kitchen will be equipped with modern appliances, LPG-based cooking systems, industrial RO water facilities, and cold storage, she said.

To ensure the quality of food, samples of meals and raw materials will be tested by FSSAI and National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited laboratories.

The implementing agencies will also be required to submit monthly reports on food distribution, employee health certificates, fire safety certificates, and valid FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) licences.

The Chief Minister stated that this scheme is a step towards ensuring a life of dignity for every poor and working citizen of Delhi.

She said that Atal Canteens will become the soul of Delhi, a place where no one will have to sleep hungry.

“Providing affordable, clean, and nutritious food to every person is the firm commitment of her government,” she said.

AAP leaders will face action for scams exposed by CAG reports: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta

New Delhi, June 6 (IANS) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which indulged in “wrongdoings” while in power in the national capital, will surely face legal action on scams which have been exposed by the CAG report, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday.

Addressing mediapersons after a visit to a government school in north Delhi’s Haiderpur village, CM Gupta said the previous Arvind Kejriwal government created an “artificial education system” under which even the buildings were so weak that they came crumbling down within two years.

Pointing to the village school’s building, built in 2018 and declared unusable within a few years, she said, “Action is still pending on the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports… Their scams have just come to light. Once the law takes its course and action is initiated, only then will the proceedings against them begin.”

“What I just showed you was built in 2018 by the respected Kejriwal government, but it was lost after just two years because it was an artificial system,” she said.

The CM also targeted the much-touted education model of the previous AAP government and said, “Haiderpur village is a densely populated area, but even today, there is no English medium school or school teaching science. If children from this village or colony want to study science, where will they go?”

She slammed the previous government and legislator for their “failure” to provide an English-medium school with a science stream in the village.

“This speaks volumes about the direction in which their so-called education policy was moving,” she said.

Apart from criticising the poor quality of construction of government school buildings, she also lashed out at the AAP government for not making provisions for playgrounds. “There are zero sports facilities,” CM Gupta said.

“From security to sanitation, the state of government schools is pathetic. There is a severe staff shortage – including school principals,” she said.

The Chief Minister said the BJP government has started the process for filling up posts of principals and sprucing up security and sanitation facilities.

“About 75 CM Shree schools will be developed across the city to give better education to students. These schools will be better than private schools,” she said.

CM Gupta also slammed the previous AAP government for launching a Board of its own in the city and maintained that the mistake will be rectified.

She said the move has made Delhi students less capable of competing in other states and seeking admission in educational institutes outside the national capital.
