Himanta Sarma to meet Assam Governor today to submit resignation

Guwahati, May 6 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday to tender his resignation, paving the way for the formation of the new BJP-led government in the state following the party’s emphatic victory in the Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati earlier on Tuesday, CM Sarma said the BJP central leadership has appointed senior party leaders as observers for the election of the BJP Legislative Party leader.

“I have just received information that our former national president J.P. Nadda has been appointed, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has been appointed as observers for the election of the leader of our legislative party,” Sarma said.

He added that he would shortly speak with J.P. Nadda regarding the schedule for the meeting of newly elected MLAs. “Once the observers ask us to convene the meeting of the MLAs, we will do so. Only after that will the swearing-in process take place,” the Chief Minister said.

Sarma further stated that after the Election Commission officially notifies the final results, he would formally submit his resignation to the Governor to ensure that the constitutional process for the formation of the new government proceeds smoothly.

The BJP-led NDA secured a resounding victory in the Assam Assembly elections, comfortably crossing the majority mark and setting the stage for a third consecutive term in office under Sarma’s leadership.

The overall results reflected a decisive mandate in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 82 out of the 126 seats in the Assembly.

The Congress lagged behind with 19 seats, while regional parties such as the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 10 seats each.

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal managed to win two seats each, while the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) opened its account with a single seat.

With this commanding victory, the BJP is set to form the government in Assam for a third consecutive term, further consolidating its dominance in the northeastern state and dealing a significant blow to the opposition.

Party leaders and workers celebrated across the state after the declaration of results, describing the mandate as a reflection of public confidence in the BJP government’s development agenda and governance.

The date for the swearing-in ceremony of the new government is expected to be announced after the BJP Legislature Party formally elects its leader.

Kochi, March 17 (IANS) The Sabarimala women’s entry issue has once again taken centre stage, with K.C. Venugopal, Congress general secretary and MP, launching a sharp attack on the state government and challenging Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to clarify his position.

Addressing the state conference of the Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha in Kochi, Venugopal criticised the state government over what he termed as “evasive tactics” in the Supreme Court on the sensitive issue.

He alleged that despite repeated opportunities, the state government had failed to take a clear stand before the apex court on whether it supports or opposes the entry of women of all age groups into the temple.

The Congress leader questioned why the Chief Minister, who had apologised when a prominent actor was distressed, had not apologised for hurting religious sentiments and traditions.

Venugopal also asked why cases registered against devotees during the Sabarimala protests had not been withdrawn and why those affected had not been compensated.

Referring to past affidavits, he said the 2016 government had effectively continued the stand taken by the 2007 government led by V.S. Achuthanandan without revisiting it.

He further alleged that the current stance of seeking the opinion of religious scholars and leaving the matter to the Supreme Court amounted to an attempt to evade responsibility.

Venugopal also criticised the argument that the state could bring in legislation on the issue, noting that the government had not expressed a firm position before the court.

Reiterating the Congress party’s stand, Venugopal said it does not support women’s entry in a manner that overrides temple customs and traditions, and that such practices should not be equated with broader questions of gender equality.

He challenged the Chief Minister to state a clear “yes” or “no” on the issue, asserting that people expect a direct answer. Failing that, he warned, those who undermine traditions and hurt devotees’ sentiments would be judged by the people.

Venugopal has thrown a challenge to CM Vijayan, as this is going to be a major discussion point in the Assembly polls.

The voting will be held on April 9, and counting is scheduled for May 4.

Petrol, diesel prices unlikely to be raised in near term amid supply disruption

New Delhi, March 9 (IANS) Petrol and diesel prices in India are unlikely to be raised immediately despite global crude oil crossing $110 a barrel amid the escalating Middle East tensions.

Government currently expects state run oil marketing companies (OMCs) to absorb the impact for now and pump prices of fuels will remain the same. OMCs may have to accept lower profits amid the spike in international oil prices, according to sources.

West Texas Intermediate rose 27 per cent to $116 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 28 per cent to $116, marking the first time since 2022 that both benchmarks crossed the $100 mark. The spike followed escalating hostilities in the Middle East amid supply disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the rally, domestic pump prices remained unchanged nationwide. Though India typically adjusts retail fuel prices in line with global crude movements, the government has occasionally asked oil companies to absorb price changes amid huge volatility.

Earlier, government sources said on Saturday that petrol and diesel prices will not increase, adding that India’s energy stock position is improving and the situation is becoming more stable.

The improving energy stock situation has given the government greater confidence in managing fuel supplies. India has also taken steps to diversify its crude oil imports to reduce dependence on vulnerable routes.

“India has increased its crude oil imports from sources other than the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, about 60 per cent of India’s crude oil imports came from sources outside the strategic shipping route, but that share has now increased to around 70 per cent,” according to cources.

“The first cargo has already started moving through the Strait of Hormuz — indicating that supply flows are stabilising,” they mentioned.

Qatar’s energy minister Saad al-Kaabi had warned that war in the Middle East continuing for “few days” could cause Gulf exporters declaring force majeure, halting deliveries, pushing oil to $150 a barrel and natural gas to $40 per MMBtu within weeks.

US President Donald Trump has defended the spike in oil prices, saying higher oil prices were a temporary cost tied to confronting Iran’s nuclear threat.

NIA arrests final offender, accomplice in 2019 Ramalingam killing

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has nabbed the last of the six absconding proclaimed offenders (POs) and also arrested one more harbourer in the Ramalingam murder case, the agency said on Tuesday.

Mohammed Ali Jinnah of Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu was declared a PO and also carried a reward of Rs. 5 lakh for his arrest since Ramalingam was hacked to death in Thanjavur (TN) on February 5 2019, allegedly by members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI).

“NIA investigations have revealed the role of Jinnah, a former district president of PFI, Thanjavur district, in conspiring, supervising and coordinating with other accused in the brutal killing,” the agency said in its press note.

The agency, which caught Jinnah on the basis of information received from the ATS unit of the Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday, also arrested Asmath, who had harboured the POs in the case for the past several years.

Just five days ago, NIA had arrested two more absconding POs and three other harbourers in the case RC-06/2019/NIA/DLI.

The agency, which had taken over the probe from Thiruvidaimaruthur police on March 7, 2019 and filed the chargesheet in August 2019, is continuing to investigate the conspiracy behind the murder.

Earlier in August, the NIA searched nine locations in Tamil Nadu and arrested Imthathullah, proprietor of Ambur Biryani Hotels in Kodaikanal, from Dindigul district.

During the searches, NIA arrested Imthathullah for knowingly and voluntarily harbouring absconding POs in his hotel outlets from 2021 onwards.

“Incriminating documents and digital devices, etc, were also seized during the searches conducted in Dindugal and Tenkasi districts,” the agency had said back then.
