Bihar: Villagers kill leopard in Purnea, probe underway

Patna, May 27 (IANS) A leopard that had allegedly terrorised villagers for the past three days in Chakla Bahiyar, located under the Tikapatti Police Station area of Bihar’s Purnea district, was ultimately killed by villagers after repeated attacks on livestock and local residents.

According to local residents, the leopard had strayed into the village and nearby agricultural fields, where it reportedly killed two calves and a goat.

The wild animal also attacked several villagers during the past few days, leaving at least three people injured.

All the injured individuals are reported to be out of danger.

On Wednesday, panic spread again after a leopard was spotted moving through the fields.

A large crowd of villagers gathered, surrounded the wild animal, and, after a prolonged confrontation, managed to kill it.

The incident triggered chaos and fear throughout the locality.

Villagers reported sightings of wild animals in the area for several days, but the leopard’s repeated attacks intensified fear among residents.

The matter had already been reported to the local police and the Forest Department.

Speaking about the incident, village head Shanti Devi said that information about the leopard’s movements and attacks had been communicated to the authorities, after which the administration and the Forest Department reached the spot.

After receiving information about the incident, officials from the local administration and the Forest Department arrived at the scene and took custody of the leopard’s carcass.

The injured villagers were treated at a nearby referral hospital.

Forest Department officials have now launched an investigation into how the leopard entered the populated area and whether there may be additional wildlife movement in the surrounding region.

According to an official, due to intense heat and humidity, the wild cat may have strayed into human habitats in search of water and food.

The leopard carcass was sent for post-mortem examination, which will be conducted by a panel of three veterinary doctors.

He added that Begusarai has seen significant development, and Rahul Gandhi should witness the state’s progress.

“Begusarai has witnessed the highest development in Bihar under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. There are large factories, especially in the food sector. He should see the advancements in the refinery, the establishment of an ethanol plant, and the construction of a plastic park. Visit Simaria Ghat and observe the progress,” he claimed.

BJP National Spokesperson claimed that after losses in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi, Rahul Gandhi has come to Bihar due to fear that Congress may not be able to win a single seat, and that is the reason for his padyatra.

Shahnawaz Hussain also criticised the Congress for its internal contradictions, saying that Rahul Gandhi’s tour is an attempt to put pressure on the RJD.

“Congress is not ready to accept Tejashwi Yadav as a leader, and Congress leaders are making conflicting statements. Even Congress-supported Pappu Yadav. Congress should clarify whether it will contest under Tejashwi Yadav’s leadership, fight separately, or form an alliance. Rahul Gandhi’s visit is more about exerting pressure within his alliance rather than engaging with the public,” he further claimed.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi joined the ongoing ‘Palayan Roko, Naukri Do’ padyatra in Begusarai district, Bihar. NSUI national in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar accompanied the LoP during the padyatra, which was marked by participants wearing white T-shirts and carrying party flags.

A large number of Congress workers gathered near Subhash Chowk in Begusarai town to welcome Rahul Gandhi.

A day earlier, Rahul Gandhi had appealed to the youth to participate in the ‘Palayan Roko, Naukri Do’ yatra, urging them to work towards dethroning the NDA government.

Four killed as SUV collides with container truck on MP-Rajasthan border

Neemuch (Madhya Pradesh), April 21 (IANS) Four persons died and three others sustained severe injuries in a road accident on the Neemuch-Nasirabad highway, near the Madhya Pradesh-Rajasthan state border.

The tragedy occurred when an SUV collided with a container truck, resulting in a violent impact that left the car in pieces. The accident took place at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Sunday near Rajputana Hotel under the Nimbahera police station area of Chittorgarh, Rajasthan.

The SUV, bearing registration number MP 13 ZA1508, first hit the road divider before losing control and crashing into the container truck coming from the opposite lane.

Investigating officer Vishwajeet from the Nimbahera police station in Rajasthan told IANS, “Four of the vehicle’s occupants died while three others who were severely injured had been taken to Udaipur hospital for treatment. They have been identified as residents of various locations, including Ingoria and Narwal in Ujjain, and Badanwar in Madhya Pradesh. The collision was so intense that one side of the SUV was completely crushed.”

According to the police officer, the group had departed from Ingoria village in Ujjain district and was travelling to Rajasthan to visit the renowned ‘Sanwalia Seth’ (Lord Krishna) temple. The accident occurred near the village of Bangred Mamadev. The driver, Rajesh, aged 30, reportedly lost control of the vehicle while navigating a sharp turn, which is believed to have led to the crash. Rajesh died on the spot.

Among the deceased are Gaurav Pawar, aged 32, from Ingoria, Ujjain; Anil Bhambi, aged 18, from Narwal, Ujjain; and Sanjay Bhambi, aged 40, from Kheda, Badanwar. The injured individuals — identified as Deepak Bhambi, aged 39, from Urdupura, Ujjain; Sunil Balai, aged 28, from Shakarpur, Ujjain; and Yogesh Bhambi, aged 20, from Ingoria, Ujjain — were provided initial treatment at a local hospital before being referred to Udaipur for advanced medical care.

The families of the victims have been informed, and post-mortem examinations of the deceased have been conducted. Sanwaliaji Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna in Madaphiya village on the Chittorgarh-Udaipur Highway, Rajasthan.

Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those who are injured in the accident.

Kerala HC serves ultimatum to Centre to decide on loan waiver for Wayanad landslide victims

Kochi, Aug 13 (IANS) The Kerala High Court on Wednesday issued a stern ultimatum to the Central government, granting it one final opportunity to convey its decision on waiving off loans taken by victims of the Wayanad landslides.

A division bench of Justices A.K. Jayasankaran Nambiar and Jobin Sebastian was hearing a suo motu case initiated following the devastating landslide that struck Wayanad on July 30, 2024.

When the matter came up, the court inquired about the Centre’s position on the loan waiver.

The Additional Solicitor General, appearing for the Centre, informed the bench that no final decision had been communicated to him yet, but assured that he would update the court by September 10.

Taking note of the prolonged delay, the bench ordered: “Post these matters on 10th September. This is the last chance for the Central government to revert to this court regarding their decision on the loan waiver.”

In previous hearings, the ASG had explained that the matter had moved from the Ministry of Home Affairs to the Department of Expenditure and subsequently to the Finance Ministry, where it is pending further instructions.

This is not the first time the court has expressed dissatisfaction with the Centre’s approach.

In April, the High Court had criticised the Union government and the National Disaster Management Authority for inaction and urged them to emulate Kerala Bank’s example, which wrote off Rs 5 crore worth of loans owed by affected residents.

According to court records, 12 banks collectively hold 3,220 accounts in the landslide-hit region, with total exposure amounting to Rs 35.30 crore.

The bench had earlier reminded the Centre of its responsibility as the chief executive in a welfare state, urging it to aid citizens who lost their livelihoods, instead of allowing banks to adopt a “Shylockian” approach towards borrowers.

The July 30, 2024, disaster decimated four villages, injured hundreds, claimed over 200 lives, and left 32 people still missing.

Survivors continue to face financial hardship as they struggle to rebuild their lives.
