Trinamool leader Santanu Sen resigns from party’s All-India Spokesperson post

Kolkata, May 28 (IANS) Doctor and Trinamool Congress leader, Santanu Sen, resigned from the post of the party’s All-India Spokesperson, by sending a letter to former Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo, Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.

The former Rajya Sabha MP said that he has decided to leave the post after accepting the verdict of the people in state Assembly elections.

Santanu had spoken out about hospital corruption after the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024. At that time, he was suspended from the party for making anti-party statements. He was also removed from the post of party spokesperson. Later, he got the post back.

Now with Trinamool Congress out of power, Santanu has left that post again. He has sent a letter to the party leader in this regard. However, it is not yet clear whether his resignation has been accepted or not.

A few days ago, he posted a note on social media congratulating the newly-elected BJP government in the state and thanking new Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

This made Trinamool uncomfortable. After that, on Wednesday, Santanu opened up about the RG Kar case. He said that he was ready to provide any assistance to the new government in investigating the incident.

He said, “I had to support many immoral acts as the party spokesperson. Even if my heart did not agree, I had to do all of them. It is clear from the results of the Assembly elections that people did not accept the RG Kar incident or recruitment scam. People should take that verdict seriously. That is why I resigned.”

In a letter to Mamata Banerjee, he wrote, “I have been working as a loyal soldier of the Trinamool since its birth. I have tried to work with sincerity whenever the party needed me. I thank you and express my gratitude for giving me the opportunity to work in various fields.”

He further said, “Even if my heart did not agree, I have fought for the party publicly in the media on many controversial issues during various difficult times, for which the common people have often told me many things. But now when people have rejected us for various immoral acts and corruption including the RG Kar incident, job theft, my heart does not agree to support them as a spokesperson in any way. Therefore, I want to resign from the post of Trinamool’s All-India Spokesperson, taking the people’s verdict into consideration.”

The BJP came to power with a single majority after the Assembly elections. They won 208 seats and the Trinamool got 80 seats. Since the debacle in the elections, unrest and rebellion have started in the Trinamool. Leaders are opening their mouths against the party one after another. The party is being criticised openly, accepting that the people who gave this verdict were fed up with institutional corruption and extortion charges.

New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, on Monday, set a year-end target to complete the negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries and agreed to deepen bilateral collaboration in the energy and critical mineral sectors.

“The two leaders welcomed the conclusion of a CAD $2.6 billion commercial agreement between Cameco and the Department of Atomic Energy for the long-term supply of uranium, contributing to India’s civil nuclear energy generation, clean energy transition objectives, and long-term energy security,” according to a joint statement issued after the summit.

Recognising their complementary strengths as energy powers, the two leaders agreed to advance the India-Canada Strategic Energy Partnership aimed at deepening long-term cooperation across the energy value chain.

“They underscored the shared commitment to enhancing collaboration across clean energy, conventional energy, civil nuclear energy, and critical minerals to promote affordability, sustainability, and economic growth,” according to a joint statement issued after the summit.

The leaders noted that strengthened institutional engagement would support expanded bilateral energy trade, including in liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), crude oil, refined petroleum products, potash, and uranium supply offtakes.

New Delhi and Ottawa hope to increase bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during a joint media conference with his Canadian counterpart Carney, from nearly $9 billion in 2024-25.

Both sides acknowledged the significant potential to further expand bilateral energy trade. This includes increased oil and LNG imports by India from Canada, as well as the supply of refined petroleum products from India to Canada.

In this context, Canada reaffirmed its plans to expand heavy oil export infrastructure and supplies of LNG to the Indo-Pacific market through Canada’s stated goal of producing 50 million tonnes of LNG per year by 2030 and up to 100 million tonnes by 2040.

The two leaders welcomed discussions between Indian public sector oil and gas companies and Canadian energy firms to expand bilateral cooperation in LPG.

Both sides also reaffirmed support for greater private investment flows and long-term offtake arrangements including through tools, such as loans, financing, and equity investments to support commercially viable energy partnerships.

The two leaders underscored their commitment to deepening long-term, reciprocal investment partnerships across the energy and natural resource sectors, recognising the scale of ongoing projects and emerging opportunities in both markets.

They further welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on critical minerals cooperation, reflecting their shared commitment to building resilient, secure, and diversified critical minerals supply chains.

The two leaders agreed to strengthen collaboration in investment to support clean energy technologies and future-oriented industries.

They agreed to deepen cooperation on critical minerals and energy transition pathways, including exploring collaboration on helping to secure India’s mineral stockpiling initiative, and supporting robust commercial outcomes for Canadian and Indian companies, while also sharing expertise on emissions reductions, and transition technologies.

The leaders also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Clean Energy Cooperation, establishing a comprehensive institutional framework to advance bilateral collaboration across solar, wind, bioenergy, small hydro, energy storage, and capacity-building.

Canada expects to double electricity supply by 2050 and significantly expand deployment of renewable energy and energy storage.

The two leaders discussed the urgency and mutual benefit of strategic partnership on space cooperation by respective agencies and private sectors.

Building upon space cooperation, India and Canada intend to explore joint initiatives to integrate AI into space and aerospace technologies.

By co-developing these AI tools for space applications and earth observation, both countries will advance innovation and reinforce their technological sovereignty.

The two leaders also agreed to explore collaboration on AI-assisted tools to strengthen the diagnostic capabilities of distance medicine to deliver modern, reliable healthcare to the remote regions of both countries.

Besides, recognising the growing complementarity between India and Canada in agriculture and agri-food systems, the two leaders underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation to enhance food security, farm productivity, and resilient supply chains.

14,329 electric buses operating on Indian roads under NEBP: Minister

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) India now has 14,329 electric buses operating on the roads as part of the National Electric Bus Programme (NEBP), the Parliament was informed on Wednesday.

NITI Aayog has requested Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) to perform the role of a programme manager for the demand aggregation of 50,000 e-buses.

The government has introduced a number of schemes, such as “PM-eBus Sewa” and “PM E-Drive”, which extend financial assistance for electric vehicles.

“State Transport Corporations may send proposals to the departments concerned for assistance. No fund has been allocated as financial assistance to Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation in the last five years,” Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

Earlier this month, the Central government extended the PM E-Drive scheme for electric buses, ambulances, and trucks by two years to March 2028. According to a gazette notification issued by the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries, the scheme will now lapse in March 2028 instead of March 2026.

Fund allocation for the scheme has been maintained at Rs 10,900 crore, and no additional allocation will be made under the scheme, according to the notification. As per the notification, incentives for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers will end by March 2026.

The PM E-Drive scheme supports decarbonisation with up to Rs 9.6 lakh incentives for switching to electric trucks, targeting approximately 5,600 e-trucks nationwide.

In July, the government launched a groundbreaking scheme to provide financial incentives for electric trucks (e-trucks) under the PM E-Drive initiative, with the maximum incentive set at Rs 9.6 lakh per vehicle.

This marks the first time the government is extending direct support for electric trucks, aiming to accelerate the country’s transition to clean, efficient and sustainable freight mobility.

The scheme is expected to support the deployment of approximately 5,600 e-trucks across the country.

American woman hails affordability, accessibility of Indian healthcare after Rs 50 thumb treatment

Mumbai, Sep 28 (IANS) An American woman living in India has shared her experience of receiving quick and affordable medical care for a thumb injury, highlighting the accessibility and cost-effectiveness of the Indian healthcare system.

Kristen Fischer, who has been living in India for over four years, recounted in an Instagram video how she accidentally cut her thumb while cutting vegetables.

The wound was bleeding heavily, prompting her to ride her bicycle to a nearby hospital.

She spent about 45 minutes at the facility and, to her relief, did not need stitches. The total cost of her treatment was just Rs 50, or roughly 60 cents.

“I cut my thumb, it was bleeding a lot, I rode my bicycle to the local hospital, spent 45 minutes there, and didn’t end up needing stitches, paid 50 rupees, and went home,” said Fischer.

Fischer said she was surprised by the convenience of having a hospital just five minutes from her home.

She described India’s healthcare network as easily accessible and reassuring, especially in emergencies.

She also contrasted the low cost of treatment with the high expenses in the United States, where monthly health insurance premiums often range from $1,000 to $2,000.

“They only charged me 50 rupees for the whole experience. For those who don’t know, that is like 60 cents. Healthcare is so much more affordable in India than in the USA where most insurance premiums cost $1-2k/month!” she added.

The Instagram video quickly went viral, sparking a discussion about the differences between healthcare in India and the US.

Social media users praised Fischer’s experience, noting that India offers medical assistance without the hurdles often seen in the US.

Some users shared their own stories of affordable or waived medical care in India, while others highlighted the long waiting times for medical appointments in the US.
