Telangana Advocates Protection Act comes into force

Hyderabad, June 2 (IANS) Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026 came into effect from Tuesday. The Chief Minister Revanth Reddy-led Telangana government officially notified the implementation of the Act, aimed at providing protection to advocates in the discharge of their professional duties.

The Law Department on Tuesday issued Government Order (G.O) No. 41, bringing the Act into force across the state.

The Assembly had passed the Telangana Advocates Protection Bill, 2026, in March this year to protect advocates amid increasing attacks on them. The Governor subsequently gave his assent for the Bill.

This legislation aims to provide police protection for advocates; safeguards against false cases, conspiracies, and harassment; a dedicated grievance redressal mechanism; and protection from threats and retaliatory attacks while discharging professional duties.

Terming it a big step for the safety of advocates, the state government had told the Assembly that the Bill was drafted following the Bar Council of Telangana’s resolution and input from High Court Bar Associations, legal forums, and the legal community.

The government had said that this law ensures professional safety and security for advocates while strengthening their confidence. This step reinforces the importance of the legal profession and empowers advocates to serve justice without fear, Minister for Legislative Affairs D. Sridhar Babu had told the Assembly.

Sridhar Babu said that after Karnataka and Rajasthan, Telangana is among the states to introduce such a law. The Bar Council of India also prepared a draft in 2021 to address advocate safety, and the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court had emphasised the need for a special law.

The legislation came into force a few days after the sensational killing of Telangana High Court advocate Khaja Moizuddin in Hyderabad.

He was killed on May 23 near his house in Masab Tank when he was getting into his car. A speeding four-wheeler intentionally hit him, resulting in serious injuries and later his death.

Police on May 29 announced arrest of Congress leader Mujahid Alam Khan, his father Nawab Mahbub Alam Khan, and five associates.

State Congress unit Vice President Mujahid Alam Khan and his father, Mahbub Alam Khan, a prominent citizen and secretary of Anwar-ul-Uloom Educational Association, allegedly conspired with their associates and hired killers to eliminate Moizuddin for a contract of Rs 15 lakh.

According to police, the motive behind the murder was a prolonged dispute between the family of Mujahid Alam Khan and the deceased advocate over Waqf properties and management issues. Several civil, criminal, and Waqf Tribunal cases were pending between both groups for many years.

Five killed as car plunges into river in Uttarakhand’s Devprayag

Devprayag, April 12 (IANS) In a tragic incident, five members of a family lost their lives after a car plunged into a river in Devprayag, located in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district, on Saturday, officials said.

The vehicle veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge, resulting in a fatal crash, they added.

According to authorities, six people were travelling in the car at the time of the accident. One woman was miraculously rescued from the wreckage and is currently receiving medical treatment. She is still in shock. The remaining five occupants died on the spot.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a rescue operation soon after being alerted. Teams used cranes and other heavy machinery to pull the mangled vehicle out of the river, a process that took several hours due to the difficult terrain.

Officials said that all the bodies trapped under the vehicle had been recovered.

“The car has been pulled out. It took several hours. The bodies have also been retrieved. The police are examining how the accident took place,” an SDRF official said.

All five victims are believed to be from the same family, according to the police. The deceased have been sent for postmortem examination to the nearest hospital.

There is a sense of shock and grief in the area as local residents gathered at the accident site. The local administration, police, and emergency personnel are present and coordinating relief and rescue efforts.

While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that speeding may have led to the driver losing control of the vehicle which fell into the river killing five people on the spot.

Officials said that relatives of the deceased have started arriving at the accident site.

J&K L-G flags off 53-member contingent to participate in 29th youth festival in Delhi

Jammu, Jan 7 (IANS) Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, on Wednesday, virtually flagged off a 53-member youth contingent from J&K to participate in the 29th National Youth Festival-Viksit Bharat Young leaders’ dialogue 2026 in New Delhi.

The L-G said that to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on 12th January, the National Youth Festival (NYF), dedicated to youth empowerment and unity for the youth, is organised annually.

He said that in the year 2025, the National Youth Festival was restructured as Viksit Bharat Young Leaders’ Dialogue to align with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

He added that the contingent selected for the Viksit Bharat Challenge Track and Cultural/Innovation Track will represent J&K at the prestigious national event at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, from 10th to 12th January 2026.

Interacting with the participating youth through virtual mode, the Lieutenant Governor extended his best wishes for the prestigious event.

He congratulated the participants for emerging from local competitions to reach the national stage, noting that their journey reflects the immense potential inherent in the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Youth is not a matter of age. It is the mindset. It is about courage, curiosity, and the power to bring about change. I have complete faith in our Youth’s potential and their resolve to shape a developed India,” the L-G said.

Invoking Swami Vivekananda’s iconic clarion call, “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached,” the Lieutenant Governor urged the youth to make their dreams the sole purpose of their lives and to consider every challenge on the way as a lesson in discipline and patience.

He emphasised that true leadership is defined not by personal achievements, but by the ability to create opportunities for others.

“Your greatest responsibility is towards society and the nation. True progress is about creating opportunities for others to move forward. Develop future capabilities, focus on character building and embrace lifelong learning,” he said.

He pointed out that be bold, fearless, and think beyond boundaries. “Your courage, discipline, clarity, and determination, combined with the experience, will be your guide in this journey toward Viksit Bharat,” the Lieutenant Governor told the Youth.

Karnataka: Gadkari dedicates Sigandur bridge to nation

Shivamogga (Karnataka), July 14 (IANS) Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, along with Union Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi and former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, dedicated the Sigandur project to the nation on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, BJP MP B. Y. Raghavendra stated, “This is the country’s second-largest connectivity bridge, connecting Ambaragodlu – Kalasavalli – Sigandur – Kollur (locally known as the ‘Holebagilu’ bridge).

The bridge built across the ‘Sharavati River’ is a crown jewel in the Malenadu capital of Karnataka. This historic cable-supported bridge measuring 2.25 km in length has been constructed with state-of-the-art technology, funded by approximately Rs 423 crore, he stated.

“Today, the historic project has been dedicated to the nation. This marks a permanent liberation after six decades of continuous struggle by the affected flood victims,” he stated.

Responding to the cries of the people from the flood-affected region for over six decades, the central government released around Rs 423 crore in funding, making this a dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.

MP Raghavendra further stated that this historic event is a result of the determination of former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and the selfless love and blessings of all. Malenadu stands witness to this, he added.

This also sends a message to the nation that the central government is a responsive administration that immediately answers the calls of the people it governs, Raghavendra stated.

Furthermore, it continues the tradition of completing projects within the stipulated time and inaugurating them within its tenure, thereby making history, he said.

This bridge will not only resolve the longstanding problems of the flood-affected people of Sharavathi’s hinterland but also help to foster stronger ties between the Malenadu and coastal districts. Additionally, it will strengthen economic activities, tourism, and the confluence of diverse cultures between the two districts, heralding the beginning of a new era, Raghavendra stated.

This is a historic occasion, which is to be inscribed in golden letters, said MP Raghavendra. He remembered and expressed heartfelt thanks to Prasanna Kerekarai and hundreds of other fighters who have struggled for decades for this cause.

The inauguration of the 2.12-kilometre-long Sigandur Bridge, built at a cost of Rs 473 crore, has run into controversy after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alleged that protocol was not followed and announced that no local Ministers or MLAs from the state government would attend the event.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Monday, CM Siddaramaiah stated that it was the Centre that had initiated the conflict.

Responding to the objections raised by Siddaramaiah over being neglected by the Centre in the invitation to the inauguration of the Sigandur cable bridge project, the Centre has clarified that the Chief Minister was invited to the event on June 11 and was also requested to preside over the programme.

Karnataka BJP has slammed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s absence from the Sigandur Bridge inauguration event as ‘pettiness’. The party further asked, “Does it burn that BJP achieved what Congress couldn’t in 60 years?’.
