Bengal: Former Trinamool MLA Debprasad Bagh arrested over corruption charges

Kolkata, June 2 (IANS) Another former Trinamool Congress MLA from West Bengal’s East Burdwan district has been arrested over corruption charges, the police said on Tuesday.

After former MLA from Burdwan Dakshin Khokan Das, former MLA from Kalna Debprasad Bagh has been arrested by the police.

On Monday night, the police of Nadanghat police station conducted a raid at Debprasad’s residence.

Debprasad was detained and taken to the police station.

On Tuesday, the police said that he has been arrested.

The allegation against Debprasad is that he kept government relief materials in his house.

The former Trinamool Congress MLA had collected and kept everything from relief materials to sports equipment, to be given to the youth, at his residence.

According to police officers, this action against Debprasad is based on the allegation that he kept government relief materials in his personal storage instead of distributing them.

The former MLA from Kalna is being questioned to find out the purpose for which the materials were kept in the house and whether there is any other connection.

According to local sources, there was dissatisfaction against Debprasad for a long time. Despite the many questions surrounding the then MLA’s lifestyle and assets, no one would speak out publicly about it due to the political situation. However, after the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in the state, locals have been accusing Debprasad of widespread corruption.

On Monday night, the police and Central armed police forces reached the former Trinamool MLA’s house. As soon as the news spread, a large mob gathered at the former MLA’s house.

Locals say that Debprasad and his family sat with the door closed for a long time after receiving the news of the police’s arrival.

Late Monday night, the police detained Debprasad and took him to the police station.

Kalna-II block Trinamool President Pranab Roy was recently arrested on charges of irregularities in the distribution of government relief materials.

The house of former Purbasthali Uttar MLA Tapan Chatterjee was also searched on the same allegations.

Investigators say that more information about irregularities related to the distribution of government project materials in different areas may come to light. However, no one from the district Trinamool leadership is willing to give an official response on the raids conducted by police.

BJD issues show-cause notices to six MLAs for cross-voting in Odisha Rajya Sabha polls

Bhubaneswar, March 17 (IANS) The main opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Tuesday issued show-cause notices to six of its legislators for voting in favour of the BJP-backed independent candidate in violation of party directions during the recently concluded Rajya Sabha election for four seats from Odisha.

The MLAs against whom show-cause notices have been issued by BJD Chief Whip Pramila Mallik include Baliguda MLA Chakramani Kanhar, Jayadev MLA Naba Kishore Mallick, Choudwar-Cuttack MLA Souvic Biswal, Basta MLA Subasini Jena, Tirtol MLA Dr Ramakanta Bhoi, and Banki MLA Devi Ranjan Tripathy.

Mallik said that, despite being elected as BJD MLAs, the legislators’ actions during the Rajya Sabha polls on Monday constituted a serious breach of party discipline and a betrayal of the trust the party had reposed in them.

She further stated that the legislators have violated the party’s directions and also the decision taken in the BJD Legislature Party meeting held on March 15. Their actions violated the core principles of the Biju Janata Dal Constitution, which mandates absolute loyalty to the party’s collective decisions.

“It stands conclusively established that you voted against the above-mentioned direction, for a candidate not supported by the Biju Janata Dal. The same is evidenced by your compulsory display of the marked ballot to the authorised agent of the party on 16th March, 2026, thereby placing the manner of your voting beyond dispute,” said Mallik.

The senior BJD leader also noted that such conduct by the legislators during the Rajya Sabha polls amounts to gross indiscipline, breach of party trust, and is prejudicial to BJD’s discipline, effectively implying voluntary relinquishment of party membership.

“You are therefore called upon to show cause within 3 days of issuance of this notice as to why a disciplinary action should not be initiated against you, including suspension from the Biju Janata Dal; and appropriate legal and constitutional proceedings should not be initiated on the ground that by your conduct you have voluntarily given up the membership of the Biju Janata Dal,” reads the notice.

Mallik noted that if no satisfactory explanation is provided by the MLAs by 5 p.m. on March 20, BJD may proceed ex parte and take action deemed appropriate as per the law, the constitution and rules of the BJD.

It is pertinent to mention that as many as 11 legislators, eight from the BJD, including two suspended MLAs and three from the Congress, cross-voted during the Rajya Sabha biennial elections held on Monday, resulting in the victory of BJP-backed candidate Dilip Ray.

Hindu workers are always killed under Congress govt, claims K’taka LoP

Madikeri, April 9 (IANS) Karnataka Leader of the Opposition (LoP) R. Ashoka claimed on Wednesday that Hindu workers are always killed whenever comes to power in the state.

“Whenever Congress comes to power, workers of Hindu organisations get killed. Prashant Poojari, RSS’s Raju, Rajesh Kotian, Praveen Poojari, Charan Poojari, Vishwanath – these are just a few of the many Hindu workers murdered by Muslim organisations like PFI and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI),” claimed the Karnataka LoP while addressing the Janakrosh Yatra in Madikeri city.

He added that Vinay Somaiah, of Kodagu, has been harassed to the point of committing suicide, adding that targeting Hindus will not go on for long.

“In Kodagu, during the earlier Tipu Jayanti celebrations, an elderly person Kuttappa was killed. The Congress government is trying to divide Hindus. Reservations have been given to Muslims in government contracts. If Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remains in power, he will hand over Karnataka to Pakistan,” he further claimed.

He also claimed that in the past, attacks by Muslims on Hindus used to happen in Jammu and Kashmir, adding that if Siddaramaiah continues as Chief Minister, Kodagu will also become like Kashmir.

He alleged that even when young women are raped in the state, Home Minister G. Parameshwara says these incidents are routine, adding that police officers obey whatever Congress leaders tell them.

“Police should not engage in such acts of hushing up crimes against Hindu workers and women for the sake of transfers or money,” he claimed.

He said that due to tax hikes and rising prices, people are suffering, adding that if ministers or Congress MLAs come to the public, they should be heckled.

“The government wants people to say everything is fine even when there are no medicines in hospitals. Congress leaders want people to praise them and say it’s a great hospital,” he alleged.

He added that Siddaramaiah has taken loans and burdened the people, claiming that no previous Chief Minister has ever taken on so much debt.

“Siddaramaiah is sucking the blood of the people. Congress is collecting money from the people to provide guarantees,” he alleged.

Pakistan in deep economic crisis with 44.7 pc population below poverty line

New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS) Pakistan stands at a critical juncture. The convergence of poverty, unemployment, demographic pressure and inequality reflects a deeply rooted crisis with far-reaching consequences for a country in which 44.7 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, according to an article in the Pakistan Observer newspaper.

Pakistan’s per capita income has stagnated and even declined in recent years, reflecting deepening economic challenges.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, during the fiscal year 2022-2023, the country recorded an 11.38 per cent drop in per capita income, falling from $1,766 in 2022 to $1,568 in 2023. This decline coincided with a sharp contraction in the overall economy, which shrank by $33.4 billion, from $375 billion to $341.6 billion.

The stagnation is largely attributed to persistent structural issues, including political instability, inflation, currency depreciation and weak industrial output, the article in the widely read English daily further states.

Compared to regional peers, Pakistan’s GDP per capita remains significantly lower — estimated at $6,950 in 2025. The economic disparity between urban and rural regions further entrenches inequality, the article points out.

According to the World Bank’s 2025 findings, nearly 44.7 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, based on the revised threshold of $4.20 per person per day for lower-middle-income countries, a staggering figure that underscores the scale of deprivation.

Even more alarming is that 16.5 per cent of the population, around 39.8 million people, live in extreme poverty, earning less than $3 per day, a sharp rise from previous estimates of 4.9 per cent.

The article, written by Assadullah Channa, points out that urban centres like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad benefit from better infrastructure, diversified economies and greater access to services. In contrast, rural areas remain underdeveloped, with limited access to clean water, electricity, healthcare and education. Agriculture, the primary livelihood in these regions, suffers from low productivity and outdated practices.

Provincial disparities also persist. Punjab and Sindh attract more investment and development, while Balochistan and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lag behind due to historical neglect, weak governance. This uneven distribution of resources fuels social discontent and marginalisation.

Inflation, particularly in essential commodities, has become a chronic challenge in Pakistan, driven by currency depreciation, global market volatility and domestic inefficiencies. In July 2025, annual inflation rose to 4.1 per cent, up from 3.2 per cent in June, marking the highest level since December 2024. The impact is most severe on food and energy prices.

The erosion of purchasing power among lower-income groups has led to widespread hardship, with many households forced to cut back on meals, education and healthcare. Public investment in education and health is critically low, with education spending reduced by 44 per cent in the latest budget and health expenditure hovering around 1 per cent of GDP.
