Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20: Bengaluru Blasters, Gulbarga Mystics to raise the curtain on Season 5 on June 20

Bengaluru, June 2 (IANS) Kalyani Bengaluru Blasters and Gulbarga Mystics will raise the curtain on the fifth edition of the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 on June 20, before Mysore Warriors take on debutants Shivamogga Yodhas in the second match of the opening-day double-header. The tournament will be held across three centres — Mysuru, Hubballi, and Bengaluru — culminating on July 12.

Coastal Kings Mangaluru, also a new franchise this season, will make their tournament debut against Hubli Tigers on June 21.

In line with the Karnataka State Cricket Association’s vision of taking top-quality cricket to fans across the state, the tournament will be staged across three centres. The Mysuru-leg will be held from June 20 to 26, before the action shifts to Hubballi, from June 27 to July 3. The tournament will then move to Bengaluru from July 5 to 12.

Mysuru and Hubballi will host 12 matches each, while Bengaluru will stage 10 matches, including Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final, as the six franchises battle for the coveted title.

The player auction for Season 5 will be held on June 5 in Bengaluru, with more than 150 players set to go under the hammer as franchises assemble their squads for the upcoming edition of the tournament. The auction will be streamed live between 9 am and 1 pm on Sony Ten 5 HD/SD.

Speaking on the schedule announcement, M.S. Keshava, Governing Council Chairman, Maharaja Trophy, said, “We are delighted to unveil the schedule for the fifth edition of the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20. One of our key objectives has been to take top-quality cricket to fans across Karnataka, and hosting matches in Mysuru, Hubballi, and Bengaluru allows us to do exactly that.

“We are particularly pleased to see the tournament return to multiple centres, while the addition of Coastal Kings Mangaluru and Shivamogga Yodhas marks an exciting new chapter for the competition. We look forward to another highly competitive season and a wonderful experience for players and fans alike,” he added.

The wedding ceremonies will take place at a secret location in Mussoorie on Tuesday and Wednesday. India skipper Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni are expected to attend the wedding.

Sakshi Pant is getting married to businessman Ankit Chaudhary. The duo got engaged last year after dating for almost nine years. Former Indian captain MS Dhoni was among the attendees at the couple’s engagement ceremony in London in January 2024.

Sakshi, who studied in the UK, enjoys a large following on social media courtesy of her travel pictures and trendy outfits.

Pant was part of the Champions Trophy-winning squad in which India defeated New Zealand in the final to clinch their third title.

The wicketkeeper-batter survived a near-fatal car crash in December 2022. After undergoing multiple surgeries and extended rehabilitation, he made a comeback to cricket after more than a year and helped India win the T20 World Cup.

On his comeback in Test, he scored a match-winning century against Bangladesh in September 2024, equalling Dhoni’s record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper.

Pant also became the most expensive player in IPL history at the 2025 mega auction after he was bought by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for Rs 27 crore in Jeddah last November. He surpassed the mark set by Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) bid of Rs 26.75 crore to buy Shreyas Iyer just a few minutes earlier.

This January, he was officially unveiled as the LSG captain for IPL 2025, starting from March 22.

Pant to lead India ‘A’ in four-day matches against South Africa ‘A”

Mumbai, Oct 21 (IANS) Rishabh Pant is set to return to competitive cricket after a long injury layoff, as the BCCI Selection Committee has named the wicketkeeper-batter captain of the India A squad for the two four-day matches against South Africa.

The two four-day games will be played from October 30 to November 9 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Pant fractured the metatarsal in his right foot during the fourth Test against England in Manchester in late July, after inside-edging a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. He was forced to retire hurt on 37, with scans later confirming a fracture.

Since then, the lengthy recovery period caused Pant to miss Asia Cup, two-match Test series against the West Indies, which concluded earlier this month in India, as well as the ongoing white-ball tour of Australia down under.

Pant, who was sidelined for three months with a fractured foot, was expected to make his return to competitive cricket for Delhi in the 2025/26 Ranji Trophy after he began his batting sessions in the CoE nets earlier this month. But there was no mention of the wicketkeeper-batter in Ayush Badoni-led Delhi squad, as he was completing his rehab at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Pant, India’s vice-captain in Tests, scored 479 runs in seven innings at a remarkable average of 68.42 during the tour of England, including two brilliant centuries in the series opener at Headingley, Leeds.

IPL fever, empty wallets: Parents slam cricket legends for fueling ‘betting craze’, ask ‘why is BCCI silent?’

New Delhi, May 30 (IANS) As the Indian Premier League (IPL) continues to captivate millions across the country, a concerning trend is growing in its shadow — the increasing influence of online betting and ‘so-called fantasy platforms’, often endorsed by some of the biggest names in cricket.

Alarmed parents and fans are now raising serious concerns, accusing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of turning a blind eye to what many describe as a “silent epidemic.”

From bustling metros to small towns, teenagers and young adults are falling prey to fantasy gaming and betting apps, drawn in by the lure of easy money and glitzy celebrity endorsements. The fallout is visible: financial distress, academic decline, and growing mental health struggles.

“It’s heartbreaking. Cricket used to be about inspiration and sportsmanship. Now it’s pushing our youth into addiction,” says Manish, a 55-year-old father from Delhi. He recently deleted three such apps from his 16-year-old son’s phone after discovering the teen had lost ₹50,000. “Why are my heroes promoting something so dangerous?” he asks.

Another parent voiced frustration: “The BCCI is busy making money and doesn’t seem to care about what’s happening to our kids. Top cricketers are promoting these apps, and the board isn’t stopping them. Some of these platforms are even sponsoring major tournaments. They’re smart — they call it fantasy sports, but there’s real money involved, and kids get addicted thinking it’s a quick way to earn.”

One family attending a recent match was shocked to see several spectators openly placing bets on their phones. “We saw teenagers on calls, placing bets live from the stadium. And there were many of them,” said a parent.

While law enforcement agencies have occasionally busted illegal betting networks, the more widespread threat now comes from mobile apps that operate openly under the guise of fantasy gaming — sidestepping regulation while encouraging risky behavior.

Critics argue that the BCCI — the world’s wealthiest and most influential cricketing body — must take moral responsibility. Yet, its silence has only deepened public concern, especially as prominent IPL players continue to feature in advertisements for these platforms.

Public pressure is mounting. Fans and parents are demanding the BCCI take a firm stand: ban sponsorships and endorsements from these so-called gaming companies, and urge cricketers to reject such deals in favor of promoting responsible behavior.

In a country where cricketers are revered like gods, supporters say it’s time for accountability to match fame. For many, cricket must return to what it once was — a celebration of skill, spirit, and sportsmanship, not a gateway to gambling.
