BJP has no place in state, says Punjab minister on Haryana CM’s rally

Chandigarh, June 7 (IANS) Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema on Sunday said that the people have once again made it clear that the BJP has no place in the state, as the poor response to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s public meeting in Dhuri reflected the complete rejection of the party by Punjabis.

Responding to CM Saini’s rally in the home constituency of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Cheema said, “The people of Punjab have shown the BJP its true reflection through the Dhuri rally. The Haryana Chief Minister came to Punjab to address a public meeting, but instead of people, he was welcomed by rows of empty chairs.

“He returned after addressing those empty chairs, which clearly shows that there is no place left for the BJP in the hearts of the people of Punjab.” The AAP leader said BJP leaders may continue making visits to Punjab, but the aware and conscious people of the state will never accept the party.

He said Punjabis have repeatedly demonstrated that they stand firmly against divisive politics and policies that work against the interests of farmers and ordinary citizens.

Highlighting the BJP’s anti-people character, Cheema said, “Every child in Punjab knows that the Bharatiya Janata Party is the same cruel party that, in its arrogance, was responsible for the sacrifice of more than 750 ‘annadatas’ of Punjab.

“These brave farmers laid down their lives while fighting to force the repeal of the three ‘black farm’ laws. The people of Punjab can never forget the sacrifice of those martyred farmer brothers, nor can they ever forgive the BJP for the atrocities committed against farmers.”

Taking on the BJP’s central leadership and policies, Cheema said the party has consistently acted against the interests of Punjab. “The BJP is not only anti-farmer but also anti-Punjab. This is the same party that has always wanted to rob Punjab of its waters and has constantly remained on the lookout to snatch away Punjab’s rights. It has repeatedly treated Punjab unfairly and has also damaged the country’s economy through its wrong policies,” he said.

Punjab Police register case for assault of army officer

Chandigarh, March 21 (IANS) Punjab Police on Friday registered a case in the police station of Civil Lines in Patiala on the statement of Col Pushpinder Singh Bath regarding an incident of assault by police officials which occurred on the intervening night of March 13-14.

The statement of Colonel Bath names the police officials who assaulted him and also gives the roles attributed to each person in the assault.

A high-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by S.P.S. Parmar, Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, Punjab, including Sandeep Malik, Senior Superintendent of Police, Hoshiarpur, and Manpreet Singh, Superintendent of Police, Rural, SAS Nagar has been constituted by the Director, Bureau of Investigation, Punjab, for conducting investigations in a fair and expeditious manner.

The SIT has been directed to conduct the investigation on day-to-day basis for collection of evidence and further legal proceedings, in order to ensure that the culprits are proceeded against as per law.

A Punjab Police spokesperson stated that instructions have been issued to the DIG (Patiala Range) to immediately transfer the police officials concerned out of Patiala district so that investigation can be conducted in a fair manner.

The spokesperson further added that all the 12 police officials have been placed under suspension and departmental proceedings for major punishment have been initiated against them.

The Additional Director General of Police, Security, Punjab has been directed to provide adequate protection to the family of Col Pushpinder Singh Bath.

CBI court sentences man to 10 years for killing UP cop

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) In a significant verdict, the Central Bureau of Investigation Court in Lucknow has convicted accused Jishan Khan and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 9,000 in connection with the culpable homicide of Inspector Anil Kumar, SHO, Kotwali Police Station, Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh.

According to an official press release issued by the CBI, the court delivered its judgment on May 2 after examining the evidence and the accused’s confessional statement recorded during trial proceedings.

The case dates back to November 19, 2015, when Inspector Anil Kumar was found dead at the Model Shop of Hotel Vaishnavi in Pratapgarh. Initially registered as Crime No. 1081/2015 under Section 302 of the IPC at Kotwali City Police Station, the investigation was later transferred to the CBI following a directive from the Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench.

The CBI formally took over the investigation on June 29, 2018, in compliance with the High Court’s order dated May 23, 2018, passed in W.P. No. 22997 (M/B) of 2016 (Arti Gujar vs State of UP & Ors).

After completing its probe, the agency filed a charge sheet against two accused persons, Jishan Khan and Bocha @ Raju Soni. The court took cognisance of the matter on February 22, 2021, and charges were framed against both accused on December 14, 2022.

During the course of the trial, Jishan Khan submitted a written application confessing to the charges on April 4, 2026. Following this, his case was separated from the main proceedings on April 10 and registered as a separate case (No. 574/2026).

In its verdict, the Special Judge, CBI, Lucknow observed that the conviction was based on “the evidence available on record and the confessional statement of the accused”, as stated in the official release.

The court subsequently sentenced Jishan Khan to 10 years of imprisonment, bringing partial closure to a case that has remained under judicial scrutiny for over a decade. The trial proceedings against the co-accused continue separately.

Pawan Singh’s wife Jyoti Singh announces bid for Bihar Assembly polls

Patna, Feb 6 (IANS) Bhojpuri superstar Pawan Singh’s wife, Jyoti Singh, has officially announced her decision to contest the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections on Wednesday.

While she has not yet disclosed the constituency or party, she confirmed that discussions are ongoing with multiple political parties.

She emphasised that the final decision regarding her candidacy would be made after consultations with the party leadership.

While interacting with the media persons at Suryapura block in Rohtas district, Jyoti Singh hinted at contesting from the Karakat or Dehri Assembly constituency.

She attended a school inauguration ceremony where she was warmly welcomed by supporters at Bangla Chowk, Suryapura.

“At present, we are talking to the various political parties. Once, it is finalised, I will join the party first followed by the announcement of the seat,” Jyoti said.

“Due to lack of time, I am not able to go to Patna. As soon as the meeting with any party would finalise, I would announce my seat,” she said.

In recent times, Jyoti Singh has been actively engaging with the public in the Karakat and Dehri Assembly constituencies.

Her increased presence in these areas has led to speculation about her potential candidacy from one of these constituencies.

During her visits, she recently praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his efforts in ensuring women’s safety in the state, highlighting the sense of security that women feel under his governance.

As the Bihar Assembly elections approach, Jyoti Singh’s potential entry into politics has become a topic of discussion in political circles, with many awaiting further announcements regarding her political affiliations and choice of constituency.

Pawan Singh contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Karakat — and came second, ahead of NDA’s Upendra Kushwaha.

Despite losing to CPI-ML’s Raja Ram Singh Kushwaha, he gave an impressive performance in his debut electoral battle.

With the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections approaching, Jyoti Singh’s political move adds a new dynamic to the contest, particularly in Karakat and Dehri, where her husband’s popularity may play a crucial role.
