Panna mine labourer strikes it rich, finds 11.19-carat diamond

Bhopal/Panna, June 29 (IANS) In a remarkable tale of perseverance and fortune, Rakesh Gond from Panna district in Madhya Pradesh, has discovered a high-quality 11.19 carat white diamond that could transform his family’s life.

The find is in addition to an earlier similar discovery of a 19.22-carat diamond in the Krishna Kalyanpur area.

This year, Rakesh discovered the precious gem, which can fetch him a maximum of Rs 40 lakh. “He discovered the gem on Sunday while mining in his shallow mines of Ahirguwa mines of Panna,” a Panna diamond mining official told IANS, adding, “earlier his brother and father had discovered a diamond of 19.22 carats.”

Rakesh makes a living as a labourer and made the discovery in the leased mines of 8 by 8 meters in size. In April this year, he took on the lease for the pit where the gem was found.

While sifting through mud with basic tools, he unearthed the stone.

Recognising its potential, he rushed home to share the news with their family before depositing it at the Government Diamond Office in Panna.

Diamond experts and officials have praised the gem’s excellent shape and quality. District officials estimate it could fetch Rs 40 lakh or more at an upcoming open auction.

After deducting government royalty and taxes, the proceeds will go to Rakesh and his family.

The Gonds come from a modest tribal background. Rakesh said he knew it was a diamond right there.

The family plans to use the windfall wisely, clearing loans, investing in farmland, building a better house, and most importantly, ensuring quality education for the children.

Panna, known for its rich diamond deposits since ancient times, continues to offer such life-changing opportunities to local miners.

The 19.22-carat stone adds to the region’s legacy of producing fine gems, many of which have fetched high prices at government auctions.

Recently, on June 18, a woman, Mira Singh, discovered a 6.45-carat diamond. She discovered it at a quarry in Jaruapur village.

It is said that the estimated price of this diamond is going to be more than Rs 12 lakh. Singh had taken over the lease of the diamond mine in March and had been mining continuously. Hard mining, she finally got this precious diamond.

Mangaluru (Karnataka), June 12 (IANS) Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Shobha Karandlaje, accused the Karnataka government of conspiring to inflate minority numbers through the caste census to provide them with more reservation.

Speaking to the media in Mangaluru on Thursday, Shobha Karandlaje claimed that the state government was attempting to suppress the June 4 stampede case at Chinnaswamy Stadium in which 11 people died, by announcing a fresh caste survey.

“They want to somehow divert attention from the stampede case. There is no genuine intention to help communities and castes behind the decision for a resurvey. Their aim is to incite inter-community conflict,” Shobha Karandlaje alleged.

Shobha Karandlaje further claimed, “The previous caste census was prepared without proper door-to-door visits. The state government’s objective is to somehow inflate minority numbers and provide them with reservations. This is the true motive of the state government.”

Defending the caste census survey, Minister for Labour Santosh Lad stated in Bengaluru that the Congress high command had given directions for re-enumeration regarding the caste census report. He explained that a few communities were claiming higher populations and have raised concerns about the current caste census report.

They have not expressed any reservation regarding the caste census, he added.

“Hence, the caste census resurvey will be conducted and implemented thereafter. What’s wrong in conducting a resurvey?” Minister Lad questioned.

When asked whether the state government was trying to divert attention from the stampede incident with the announcement of the caste census resurvey, Minister Lad responded, “The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government also announced a caste census during the time of the Pahalgam terror attack. The promise of implementing the caste census was made in our party’s election manifesto. We will ensure its implementation.”

Meanwhile, the special Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to discuss and make an announcement in this regard. The state government intends to complete the resurvey in a duration of 70 to 90 days.

WBSSC recruitment case: Suvendu Adhikari suggests publishing ‘segregated list’

Kolkata, May 22 (IANS) Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday, said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the state government can only solve the crisis of “untainted” or “genuine” teachers losing jobs following a Supreme Court order last month by publishing lists segregating the “untainted” from the “tainted” ones and then approach the apex court with the segregated lists.

“What I heard is that the state government had filed a review petition at the apex court over its order last month cancelling 25,753 teaching and non-teaching jobs in the state-run schools in the state. In my opinion, any general review petition will not solve the crisis for those who have lost jobs. The state government, should instead, approach the court with the lists segregating the ‘untainted’ from the ‘tainted’ ones,” Adhikari told mediapersons.

The main demand of the protesting teachers is also the publication of segregated lists.

Later, while addressing the mediapersons at Siliguri in Darjeeling district, the leader of the opposition said that earlier there were two offices of West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in north Bengal, one at Siliguri and one at Malda.

“The Chief Minister decided to close down both these offices. This reflects the Chief Minister’s apathy towards the people of North Bengal,” Adhikari said.

On April 3 this year, the Supreme Court upheld a previous order by the Calcutta High Court’s division bench of Justice Debangshu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi cancelling 25,753 school jobs in West Bengal.

The apex court also accepted the observation of the Calcutta High Court that the entire panel of 25,753 candidates had to be cancelled because of the failure of the state government and the commission to segregate the “untainted” candidates from the “tainted” ones.

The state government and West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) had already filed review petitions at the apex court on this issue.

Meghalaya coal mine tragedy: PM Modi expresses grief, announces compensation for kin of deceased

New Delhi, Feb 5 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, expressed deep grief over the tragic coal mine mishap in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district and announced an ex-gratia assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the victims’ families.

In a message posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“Pained by the mishap in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi also announced a financial assistance from the PMNRF, saying that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased, while those injured in the incident would receive Rs 50,000.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Conard K. Sangma said the Meghalaya government has ordered a thorough inquiry into the incident and made it clear that accountability would be enforced.

“The Meghalaya government has ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. Accountability will be fixed, and those responsible will face strict legal action,” he added.

Stressing that there would be no leniency in matters involving public safety, the Chief Minister asserted that the state would not compromise when it comes to the protection of human lives.

He said the administration would ensure that all necessary legal and administrative steps are taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

“In this moment of sorrow, the state stands in solidarity with all those affected,” Chief Minister Sangma added.

In one of the deadliest mining accidents in recent years, the bodies of at least 16 labourers have been recovered following a massive explosion at a suspected illegal coal mine in the Thangsku area of Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, police officials said on Thursday.

Confirming the toll in the accident, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said rescue teams have so far retrieved 16 bodies from the accident site.

“Sixteen bodies have been recovered so far,” Kumar told IANS, adding that the search and rescue operation is still underway.

Officials said the ex-gratia relief would be extended as part of the Centre’s immediate support to the victims of the tragedy, even as rescue and investigation efforts continue at the accident site.
