MP CM announces Rs 11,500-cr investment plan as BJP intensifies Datia bypoll campaign

Datia (Madhya Pradesh), July 27 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday announced a proposed industrial investment of more than Rs 11,500 crore for Datia while campaigning for the BJP in the Assembly bypoll, saying the project would boost industrial growth and create large-scale employment in the region.

Addressing a meeting of the Kushwaha community at Thandi Sadak, Yadav said details of the proposed project could not be disclosed at present due to the Model Code of Conduct, but asserted that it would be a major development initiative for the district.

“Within the next month, Datia will get a new industrial plant involving an investment of more than Rs 11,500 crore. I cannot disclose the date and other details because of the Model Code of Conduct, but it will be a major gift for Datia and create new employment opportunities for the youth,” Yadav said.

The Chief Minister’s announcement came as the BJP intensified its campaign in the final phase of the Datia Assembly bypoll, with the ruling party deploying its senior leadership to retain the seat. After addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister led a roadshow through the city in support of BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari.

Former state Home Minister Narottam Mishra, senior BJP leaders and a large number of party workers joined the procession, while supporters welcomed the Chief Minister’s campaign vehicle at several places and raised slogans in support of the party.

“Our government is working continuously for farmers, women and the poor. Development work will continue without interruption, and we are also making efforts to develop the Gwalior region into a future telecommunications hub,” Yadav said while addressing the gathering.

The BJP has mounted an aggressive campaign in the constituency during the final leg of electioneering, with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and several other senior leaders addressing rallies in support of the party candidate.

The Congress has also fielded its top leadership, making the bypoll one of the keenly watched political contests in Madhya Pradesh.

The Datia Assembly bypoll was necessitated following the disqualification of former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti after his conviction by a court. Polling for the seat is scheduled for July 30, while counting of votes will be taken up on August 3.

Editors Guild slams Congress over threat of criminal complaint against journalist Shiv Aroor

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) The Editors Guild of India (EGI) on Sunday expressed concern over the Congress party’s move to file a criminal complaint against senior NDTV journalist Shiv Aroor, warning against the “creeping tendency” of invoking criminal laws to target the media.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Guild noted with disquiet the remarks made by a Congress spokesperson regarding the intention to pursue criminal charges against Aroor.

“Without offering any comment on the content of the broadcast in question, the Guild is troubled by the creeping tendency to invoke criminal charges against members of the media in response to their professional work,” EGI said in its statement.

“The Guild reiterates its longstanding position that criminal laws should not be used as instruments of harassment against journalists,” it added.

It urged all political parties to avoid such measures and instead use civil remedies to address grievances. The EGI stressed that multiple avenues exist under civil law for aggrieved parties to seek redress, and resorting to criminalisation only undermines press freedom.

“Political parties must refrain from such steps,” it said, calling the use of criminal charges a dangerous precedent that could stifle free expression.

At the same time, the Guild reminded journalists of their responsibility to maintain fairness and balance in reporting. “The Editors Guild remains committed to its twin objectives of protecting press freedom and promoting high standards of editorial leadership,” the statement added.

The strongly worded note was signed by EGI President Anant Nath, General Secretary Ruben Banerjee, and Treasurer K Ve Prasad. This latest row comes at a time when concerns are mounting over the increasing pressure faced by the media in India, with journalists frequently caught between political crossfire.

MP Lokayukta raids nine premises in DA case; finds assets 258 pc above known income

Indore, July 21 (IANS) The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta on Tuesday carried out simultaneous searches at nine locations in Indore, Dhar and Morena in connection with a disproportionate assets case against a senior finance officer of the Madhya Pradesh West Zone Electricity Distribution Company.

Preliminary findings indicate that the officer allegedly possessed assets about 258 per cent higher than his known sources of income, officials said.

According to information, the searches began early morning at residential, commercial and industrial premises linked to the officer and his family members.

A case has been registered under Sections 13(1)(b) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.

According to the Lokayukta, the officer has been in government service for nearly 33 years and earned a net salary of around Rs 2 crore during the period. However, the investigation has so far traced assets and investments worth more than Rs 6.5 crore in the names of the officer and his family members.

After accounting for expenditure incurred during the service period, the total outgo has been estimated at over Rs 7.16 crore, indicating assets about 258 per cent higher than the known sources of income.

The operation was led by Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Rajesh Sahay, while teams headed by DSPs Sunil Talan, Anand Chauhan, Dinesh Patel and Deepak Shejwar searched the premises and examined property records, bank accounts and suspected benami investments.

During the searches, officials found a three-storey house in Indore’s Silicon City worth around Rs 1.2 crore and a two-storey house in Morena valued at about Rs 50 lakh.

The investigation also uncovered transformer manufacturing units and electrical equipment businesses operating in the names of family members in Pithampur and Dhar.

Officials found industrial plots, factory premises, company offices in Indore, residential plots and an electric vehicle linked to these business entities.

The ownership, investments and financial transactions of these firms are being verified as part of the investigation.

Lokayukta officials said the searches were continuing and the value of the alleged disproportionate assets could increase after scrutiny of documents, bank records and other financial transactions is completed.

The investigation was continued.

Army pays tribute to first informant of 1999 Kargil intrusion Tashi Namgyal

Leh, Dec 22 (IANS) The Ladakhi shepherd, Tashi Namgyal, who played a crucial role in alerting the Indian Army about Pakistani intrusion in the Kargil sector in 1999, was given a hero’s farewell at his funeral on Sunday.

The Fire & Fury Corps of the Army said on X, “Final Farewell To A Hero – Shree Tashi Namgyal Fire and Fury Corps extends heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Tashi Namgyal – The first informant of Kargil intrusion leading to the War. Immediate assistance has been provided to the family and continued support assured. Shree Tashi Namgyal is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter. Army shall remain indebted to his contribution to the Nation and his selfless sacrifice shall forever be remembered.”

Tashi Namgyal created history while searching for his missing Yaks in May 1999.

He spotted Pakistani soldiers in Pathani attire digging bunkers atop the Batalik mountain range in early May 1999.

Realising the gravity of the situation, he promptly informed the Indian Army, a timely warning that played a pivotal role in shaping India’s military response.

His presence of mind, valour and vigilance proved instrumental in India’s victory earning him the recognition as the heroic shepherd whose alertness turned the tide of the conflict.

He would always be invited to the Kargil Vijay Diwas after 1999. He had attended the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas earlier this year in Drass, accompanied by his daughter Tsering Dolkar, a teacher.

Namgyal passed away in Garkhon located in the Aryan Valley of Ladakh on Friday.

On his death, “Fire and Fury Corps pays tribute to Mr Tashi Namgyal on his sudden demise. His invaluable contribution to the nation during Op Vijay 1999 shall remain etched in golden letters. We offer deep condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief”, the Army said on his death.
