UP: Criminal injured in police encounter in Jaunpur; accomplice also arrested

Jaunpur, Aug 1 (IANS) An inter-district history-sheeter was injured in a police encounter in the Khuthan police station area of Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, while his accomplice was also arrested, officials said.

Police recovered a country-made pistol, a live cartridge, an empty shell, and a motorcycle from the possession of the accused.

According to the police, the Khuthan police team was conducting vehicle checks on Friday as part of an ongoing campaign against criminals. During the operation, officers attempted to stop two suspicious youths riding a motorcycle near the Suithakhurd canal culvert. However, instead of complying, the duo allegedly opened fire on the police team.

The police retaliated in self-defence, resulting in one of the accused sustaining a bullet injury to his left leg. The injured accused, identified as Rinku Yadav alias Omprakash Yadav, a resident of Sarpathan in Jaunpur district, was apprehended on the spot.

His accomplice, Satyam Lona alias Lallu, a resident of Shahpur Firozpur village under the Jalalpur police station area of Ambedkar Nagar district, was also arrested during the operation.

The injured accused was immediately taken to the Community Health Centre in Khuthan, where he received first aid before being referred for further treatment.

Girendra Singh, Circle Officer (CO), Shahganj, Jaunpur, said that Rinku Yadav is a history-sheeter registered with the Sarpathan police station. He is facing more than three dozen criminal cases across several districts, including Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Ambedkar Nagar, Sultanpur, Amethi, Prayagraj, and Ayodhya.

The cases against him include charges of attempted murder, robbery, dacoity, theft, and offences under the Gangster Act and the Arms Act.

Police officials added that several serious criminal cases have also been registered against his accomplice, Satyam Lona. Necessary legal proceedings have been initiated against both accused.

Earlier, on July 7, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) shot dead gangster Asif Ali (40) in an encounter in Ambedkar Nagar. According to STF officials, Asif opened fire after being surrounded, prompting retaliatory action in which he sustained two bullet injuries to the chest. The encounter took place near Jagdishpur village, about 25 km from the district headquarters.

Centre’s lack of support to Iran will cost India dearly: Raj Thackeray​

Mumbai, March 19 (IANS) Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday questioned the Central government’s lack of support for Iran. ​

He said Iran has been a long‑standing ally of India, particularly on the sensitive Jammu and Kashmir issue, and warned that failing to stand by a trusted partner would lead to serious diplomatic and economic consequences for India.​

He said much of India’s oil comes from Iran and that the country had supplied it in Rupees.​

“When Iran was attacked, our Prime Minister did not issue a single statement of support. Even after the passing of Khamenei, there was no official message of condolence or protest,” he remarked during his Gudi Padwa speech at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park.​

Marking the 20th anniversary of the MNS, Thackeray described the milestone as a “divine omen” and expressed confidence that his party would eventually come to power to restore Maharashtra’s “lost glory”.​

In a wide‑ranging address, he spoke about the state’s rising debt, deteriorating urban infrastructure, and sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy on the Iran‑Israel conflict.​

It was his first speech after the MNS’ rout in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, despite joining hands with his cousin and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on issues of Marathi pride and safeguarding the interests of the Marathi Manoos.​

Turning to domestic matters, Thackeray attacked the state government over Maharashtra’s financial condition. He pointed out that state debt was around Rs 2 lakh crore in 2014 under Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, and has now risen to Rs 11 lakh crore.​

“The Chief Minister talks about a 3‑trillion‑dollar economy and development, but the state is sinking in debt,” he said.​

He criticised large‑scale infrastructure projects such as the Coastal Road, claiming they were not designed for ordinary citizens but to enable “outsiders” and major industrialists like Adani to take over land in Maharashtra.​

Thackeray described Maharashtra’s urban centres as “collapsed” and “formless”, saying permissions for skyscrapers were being granted indiscriminately while basic issues such as traffic congestion remained unaddressed.​

He also urged the youth to disconnect from digital distractions.​

“Come out of Instagram reels. The government wants you distracted by IPL, films, and social media so that you don’t take to the streets to question them. You are rotting while expressing anger only on mobile screens,” he told the crowd.​

Reflecting on his early years, Thackeray recalled a lesson from his uncle and mentor, the late Balasaheb Thackeray. ​

He said Balasaheb once told him that the delivery of a speech mattered less than giving people something meaningful to think about. ​

He added that those words remained “etched in his mind like a tightened screw”.​

Despite electoral setbacks, Thackeray insisted that the MNS was the only party truly standing for Maharashtra. ​

He declared with conviction that the party would one day come to power to reclaim the state’s prestige.

Bengal school job case: Calcutta HC directs list of ‘untainted’ non-teaching staff in 2016 panel be published

Kolkata, Dec 3 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) to publish the list of “untainted” non-teaching staff in Group-C and Group-D categories in its 2016 panel, which was cancelled entirely following a Supreme Court order in April this year.

Directing the WBSSC to publish the list by Thursday, a single-judge bench of Justice Amrita Sinha observed that the publication of the list of “untainted” non-teaching staff was necessary to provide room for them to participate in the fresh recruitment process and also enjoy the necessary age relaxation for the purpose.

Even the apex court division bench had directed that age relaxation should be given in the fresh recruitment process to “untainted” non-teaching staff, who also lost jobs because of the cancellation of the entire panel, she added.

Justice Sinha’s direction to the WBSSC came while hearing a petition accusing the commission of gross irregularities in categorising “untainted” and “tainted” non-teaching staff in the 2016 panel. The petitioners alleged that several “tainted” non-teaching staff in the 2016 panel, who have proven beyond doubt of securing jobs paying money, have managed to get their names in the list for the “untainted” category.

Similarly, the petitioners have claimed that several “untainted” non-teaching staff in the 2016 panel have been dropped from the list for the “untainted” category.

As per the Supreme Court’s verdict earlier this year, while the “untainted” non-teaching staff in the 2016 panel will get the chance to participate in the fresh recruitment process, the categorically-identified “tainted” non-teaching staff from the same panel will be denied that chance.

The total number of vacancies for non-teaching staff in the Group-C category in the state-run school in West Bengal is 2,989. The number of vacancies in the Group D category is 5,488.

Andhra Pradesh sets 20 per cent growth rate target in tourism

Amaravati, Feb 13 (IANS) The government of Andhra Pradesh has set a target of 20 per cent growth rate in the tourism sector during 2025-26.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday said that within six months of the TDP-led NDA coming to power MoUs have been signed with various companies regarding investments worth Rs 1,217 crore.

He held a review meeting at the State Secretariat here on tourism, cultural events, construction of hotel rooms, investments, land lease policy and home-stays.

The Chief Minister directed the officials of the Tourism Department to take all possible measures to see to it that the tourists who are on their visit to Andhra Pradesh should feel happy. He asked to utilise all available resources to develop tourism in the state to attract tourists from across the globe.

Informing the meeting that 11 tourism resorts and hotels have been revived with an investment of Rs 45 crore in these six months, Chandrababu Naidu said that Annavaram temple has been selected under PRASAD scheme of the Centre.

Similarly, Gandikota and Akhanda Godavari have been selected under Special Assistance to States under Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme while Araku and Lambasingi have been chosen under Swadesh Darshan-2.0.

He noted that Ahobilam and Nagarjuna Sagar have been selected under the Challenge-Based Destination Development scheme.

The officials told the Chief Minister that a Tourism Events Calendar is being designed for 2025-26 to attract tourists. As part of this programme, two key international events and 12 mega events are being organised as part of 37 tourism events, they informed the Chief Minister.

Chandrababu Naidu suggested that mega events and key events can be organised on university campuses while musical culture can be integrated with events.

Chandrababu Naidu suggested that year-long programmes be organised at the Shilparamams of Visaskhapatnam, Amaravati and Tirupati. He also told the officers to exercise on distribution of Nandi Awards.

Stating that Gandikota is famous in the country for water, rock formations, and extensive greenery, he wanted it to be promoted further to attract tourists.

He said Kadapa Darga and the Ontimitta Ramalayam along with Somasila areas too should be developed as tourist destinations while Srisailam should be further developed. The traditional houses that are still existing in villages be modernized, he said, and made it clear that the quality of food being supplied at Tourism Hotels should be improved further.

As many people are still not aware that zoo parks exist in Tirupati and Visakhapatnam these should be publicised to attract tourists, he said. He directed the officials to complete the action plan for all these projects within 90 days and the tourists should feel in the next four months that Andhra Pradesh is a Happy State.
