Six drug peddlers held in Assam and Manipur; narcotics worth Rs 23 crore seized

Guwahati/Imphal, Aug 1 (IANS) Assam and Manipur Police, in separate anti-narcotics operations, arrested six alleged drug peddlers, including a woman, and seized a huge quantity of methamphetamine tablets, heroin and brown sugar collectively valued at around Rs 23 crore, officials said on Saturday.

Three of the arrested accused are from Assam, while the remaining three are residents of Manipur.

A senior police official said that personnel of the Special Task Force (STF), along with Assam Police, acting on specific intelligence inputs, intercepted a vehicle at Amingaon, on the outskirts of Guwahati. The vehicle was carrying three occupants from Manipur.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, the police recovered 50,000 highly addictive methamphetamine tablets weighing around 5 kg (excluding the packaging), concealed in specially built secret compartments of the vehicle. The police also recovered five soap cases containing 67.5 grams of heroin (excluding the packaging) from the vehicle. The total value of the seized contraband is estimated at around Rs 12.5 crore in the international illicit drug market.

The three accused, who were arrested on the spot, were identified as Kh Tabish (24), Thekcham Avinash Singh (41), both residents of Thoubal district in Manipur, and Nongmaithem Biswajit (38), a resident of Imphal West district.

Police said methamphetamine tablets, popularly known as Yaba or “party tablets”, contain a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine and are widely abused as high-potency narcotics in Bangladesh, Myanmar and several neighbouring countries, besides parts of India.

Law enforcement agencies have also frequently intercepted consignments of Codeine Phosphate-based cough syrup, another substance that is illegally trafficked into Bangladesh. These highly addictive narcotic substances are prohibited under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in India.

Investigators suspect that both the methamphetamine tablets and the heroin were smuggled from Myanmar and transported through Manipur before entering Assam for further distribution. Security agencies have repeatedly expressed concern that Manipur and Mizoram have emerged as major drug trafficking corridors in the Northeast due to their long and largely unfenced international borders with Myanmar.

Mizoram shares an unfenced border of about 510 km with Myanmar and around 318 km with Bangladesh, while Manipur has an approximately 400-km unfenced border with Myanmar, making the region vulnerable to cross-border smuggling of narcotics and other contraband.

Meanwhile, in Manipur, police personnel conducting routine vehicle checks at the Leingangpokpi checkpost in Jiribam district intercepted a car and arrested its occupant, identified as Bhima Panika (42), a resident of Karbi Anglong district in Assam. During the search, the police recovered 5.21 kg of brown sugar from the vehicle. The seized narcotics are estimated to be worth more than Rs 10 crore in the illegal market.

In another anti-drug operation, Manipur Police arrested Shahna (27), a resident of Kwakta in Bishnupur district, after conducting a search at her residence. During the operation, the police recovered two soap cases containing approximately 70 grams of heroin powder. The value of the seized heroin is estimated at over Rs 55 lakh.

In a separate development, Manipur Police, continuing the investigation into a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, at Patsoi Police Station, arrested the main accused, identified as Meraimayum Razak Ahamed (35), a resident of Yairipok Tulihal Mayai Leikai in Imphal East district.

The accused was arrested from his residence in connection with an earlier case involving the recovery of brown sugar from a Pajero SUV that had been found at a vehicle workshop. Police said further investigation is underway to trace the wider network involved in the narcotics trade.

The concerned officials have been told that such ineligible people should not be spared at all, and strict action should be taken against them.

In this matter, a complaint was given to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, by the District Supply Officer, Dehradun and the Ayushman Department. It was said that ration cards are made by the government for people with an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakhs. On receiving complaints of ration cards being made by ineligible people, when the Supply Department investigated the ration cards, the ration cards of many people were found to be fake. On this basis, these people were taking advantage of health services improperly by using their Ayushman cards.

On the instructions of the Chief Minister, SSP Dehradun registered cases at Kotwali Nagar and Thana Rajpur in the matter immediately. The police are investigating both cases thoroughly. All such people are being identified who have taken advantage of government schemes by preparing fake documents.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Dhami took to the fields and joined the farmers in planting paddy saplings.

The Chief Minister keenly participated in the traditional paddy farming in Khatima and described the experience as a ‘revival of old memories’.

He also paid tribute to the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication of the farmers and stated, “Farmers not only form the backbone of our economy but also remain the carriers of our culture and traditions.”

Char Dham Yatra resumes after two-day halt as Uttarakhand battles heavy rain

Dehradun, July 30 (IANS) The Char Dham Yatra resumed on Thursday after remaining suspended for two days as authorities prioritised the safety of pilgrims amid incessant rainfall and deteriorating weather conditions across Uttarakhand.

Prajapati Nautiyal, Special Officer on Duty (SOD) for the pilgrimage administration, told IANS, “In accordance with directives from the administration and the Garhwal Commissioner, the pilgrimage resumed smoothly at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday.”

He further said that any fresh instructions or updates received from the administration or the state government would be communicated to pilgrims through the media so that they could make informed decisions regarding their journey.

Despite the resumption of the pilgrimage, minor road blockages continue to be reported at several locations across the state due to landslides, falling rocks, and debris triggered by the persistent rainfall.

The Pokhari-Rudraprayag motor road has been blocked approximately one kilometre ahead of Guniyala Khal after large rocks and substantial debris fell from a hillside, disrupting movement along the route.

Heavy rainfall has also continued to affect normal life in Chamoli district, where the Badrinath National Highway remains blocked near Bhanerpani in the Pipalkoti area, creating difficulties for pilgrims and other travellers using the route.

Earlier, authorities had suspended the Char Dham Yatra on July 28 and 29 in view of concerns over pilgrim safety. The decision was taken after landslides blocked roads at several locations and the weather department issued an alert for heavy rainfall across parts of Uttarakhand.

The effects of continuous rainfall, landslides, and repeated disruptions have been increasingly visible on this year’s Char Dham pilgrimage, with a decline being witnessed in the number of devotees undertaking the journey each day. Despite the weather-related challenges, however, more than 4.5 million, or 45 lakh, pilgrims have completed the Char Dham Yatra so far this season.

According to government figures, a total of 4,523,412 pilgrims had visited the four major shrines in Uttarakhand by July 25. Badrinath recorded the highest footfall, with 15,53,525 pilgrims visiting the shrine since the beginning of the pilgrimage. It was followed by Kedarnath, which received 14,14,590 pilgrims, while 7,09,418 devotees visited Gangotri and 6,49,957 pilgrims travelled to Yamunotri.

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most significant pilgrimages in Uttarakhand and covers four revered temples located in the high Himalayan region — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. According to religious tradition, devotees are expected to undertake the pilgrimage in a clockwise direction.

The traditional route therefore begins with Yamunotri, followed by Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally concludes at Badrinath. The four shrines hold immense religious significance and attract millions of devotees from across India and abroad every year.

The high-altitude temples remain inaccessible for roughly six months every year because of extreme winter conditions in the Himalayan region. They generally open to devotees during the summer months, usually in April or May, and close again with the arrival of winter around October or November.

With the pilgrimage now resumed, authorities continue to monitor weather conditions, road connectivity, and the movement of pilgrims across the routes leading to the four shrines.

Pilgrims have also been advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by the administration as rainfall and landslide risks continue in several parts of the state.

Ghulam Nabi Azad dissolves all committees of his party in J&K

Srinagar, April 14 (IANS) Former Chief Minister and Chairman of Democratic Azad Party (DAP), Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday dissolved all state, province, district and block level committees of his party.

Bashir Arif, secretary to Gulam Nabi Azad, said the DAP chairman has dissolved all state, province, district and block level committees, and the reconstitution will take place in due course.

Ghulam Nabi Azad parted ways with the Congress party, with which he remained associated for over 40 years.

He was the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha as a Congress MP in 2014, and after his term of office ended, he announced that he was parting ways with the Congress that had become a ‘family driven affair’ for the mother and son.

He launched the Democratic Azad Party (DAP) from Jammu and Kashmir on September 26, 2022, saying “it will not be autocratic, but democratic”.

“The DAP will be based on the principles of democracy. It will not be influenced by any outside leader or other party. It will have independent thinking and will stay independent in its decisions. It will not be autocratic and power will not be in one hand,” Azad said on the party’s launch day.

He quit Congress on August 26, 2022, after over four decades of association, following differences with the party high command.

However, none of the leaders from the G23, a rebel group within the Congress, was present at the party launch. He had suggested launching a national-level party rather than a regional party.

DAP fought the J&K Assembly elections last year, but could not manage to win a single seat in the 90-member Legislative Assembly.

After the complete defeat in the Assembly elections, many leaders of Azad’s party left the party to rejoin Congress.

Prominent among them are Taj Mohiuddin and some other former ministers in the Congress rule in J&K.
