Juventus sign Bosnia forward Kerim Alajbegovic from Bayer Leverkusen

Turin, Aug 2 (IANS) Juventus have completed the signing of highly rated Bosnia and Herzegovina international Kerim Alajbegovic from Bayer Leverkusen on a permanent transfer, with the 18-year-old winger signing a five-year contract that will keep him at the Serie A club until June 30, 2031.

The Turin giants confirmed the deal on Sunday after reaching an agreement with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for the youngster, who arrives following a breakthrough campaign on loan at Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg.

A dynamic wide attacker capable of playing on either flank and comfortable with both feet, Alajbegovic enjoyed an impressive 2025-26 season, making 44 appearances across all competitions for Salzburg while contributing 13 goals and four assists. Bayer Leverkusen credited him with 14 goals and four assists during his loan spell.

Born in Cologne, Alajbegovic began his football journey in the youth systems of Cologne before joining Bayer Leverkusen’s academy, where he continued his development. Although he did not make a senior appearance for Leverkusen, he earned call-ups to the club’s Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League squads before moving to Salzburg to gain regular first-team experience.

Despite still being a teenager, Alajbegovic has already become a regular for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, making 11 senior appearances and scoring twice. One of those goals came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where his stunning solo strike against Qatar was nominated for the Goal of the Tournament award.

Juventus described Alajbegovic as a player with “big personality and huge promise”, highlighting his versatility, pace and unpredictability as qualities that make him a dangerous attacking option.

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said the club had to take a realistic view of the competition for places in the first team before agreeing to the transfer.

“Following his time with us in the youth ranks, Kerim has recently made great strides again whilst at Salzburg. At the same time, we had to be realistic about the fact that competition within our squad is very fierce, particularly in his preferred positions. Against this backdrop, and taking into account the overall terms of the transfer, we have agreed to his move to Italy,” Rolfes said.

“The fact that a player from our youth academy has moved to a club like Juventus once again highlights the outstanding work carried out by our academy. We wish Kerim all the best for the future,” he added.

Guwahati, Nov 22 (IANS) India’s off‑spin bowling all‑rounder Washington Sundar believes Rishabh Pant will rely heavily on his instincts as he leads the side in the second Test against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Pant becomes India’s 38th Test captain, and is only the second wicketkeeper‑batter after MS Dhoni to lead the side in the longest format. Incidentally, Pant’s first outing as Test skipper comes at the same venue where he made his ODI debut in 2018.

He was entrusted with leadership duties after regular skipper Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a neck injury. “He’s a little different from him as the captain. He’s someone who would go in with his instincts and we all know how he thinks about his game, especially when he bats. So I think we can expect a lot from his instincts and I hope he takes some interesting decisions as well,” said Sundar to broadcasters ahead of the start of the game.

The inaugural Test in Guwahati begun at 9am, earlier than the customary 9.30am start in India. The first session break will be for tea, limited to 20 minutes, followed by a 40‑minute lunch interval starting at 1:40pm.

Reflecting on preparations ahead of the Guwahati Test, especially after losing the Kolkata Test by 30 runs, Sundar said, “I mean, it is good. We had a decent prep in Eden Gardens itself immediately after the last game and then coming over here, we got a couple of days.”

“Conditions are a little different over here – like early morning starts. Conditions are a lot more different here and we need to sort of gather a lot of information in the first couple of days. So it’s going to be a lot more exciting.”

India need to win in Guwahati to level the two-game series and avoid a second series loss in two years. Sundar remarked that the Indian team is up for the challenge to save the series. “It’s the beauty of Test cricket over here. You are going to be challenged no matter what happens.”

“Even if you are doing really well in the series, you will come out and be challenged every single day throughout the game. So I think all of us are really up for the challenge, especially when playing at home, we genuinely feel strong and we are prepared enough as well.”

Sundar, who was promoted to number three in the batting order in Kolkata and made scores of 29 and 31, said the opportunity to bat one down was one he would embrace wholeheartedly.

“It’s all got to do with how I manage my time and the day. The fact that it’s not a long series means I have got enough time to give to both batting and bowling and also to fielding here and there. But then yes it’s a great opportunity to play at number three, especially at the highest level for the Indian cricket team, I would take it any day with both my hands.”

ISL 2024-25: FC Goa one win away from securing second spot, Punjab FC’s fate out of their hands

New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) FC Goa will travel to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to take on Punjab FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 on Thursday, hoping to win the match and secure their second spot in the standings. The Gaurs have 42 points in 21 games and are in promising form with four victories in their last five encounters. Their target would be to secure the second spot, currently leading the third-placed Jamshedpur FC (37) by five points, since a top-two finish guarantees a semifinal place.

Punjab FC have garnered 24 points from 21 games, and the scenarios that could see them qualify for the playoffs are dependant on unlikely results.

The Panagiotis Dilmperis-coached side needs to win all of their remaining encounters and hope that NorthEast United FC lose their two matches or Mumbai City FC win no more than one point. Punjab FC will also need Odisha FC and East Bengal FC to drop points in at least one of the games that they are to play now.

Punjab FC need to ensure that they have a superior goal difference to Kerala Blasters FC and Chennaiyin FC, who can finish at the same points as them.

FC Goa have been unbeaten against Punjab FC in the ISL, winning twice in their last three matches, including a 2-1 triumph in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign. A victory here will equal their best-ever tally of four league doubles in a single ISL season, a feat they previously scaled in 2019-20 and 2023-24. Punjab FC’s struggles reflect the fact that they have not kept a clean sheet against FC Goa thus far.

FC Goa and Punjab FC have faced each other three times in the ISL, with the Gaurs winning twice and one game ending in a draw.

Punjab FC head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis said that his team would provide a formidable fight to the visiting Gaurs. “Our players were really focused during the training session, and they have understood everything pretty well. We will see a team that will be an equal opponent to FC Goa,” he said.

FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez outlined that his side has its eyes set on three points. “We are targeting the three points. We need to be thinking only about the coming game, and we know that we need to win at least two games to be in the second position,” he said.

Golf: Rookie Avani and Pranavi make cut at Australian Women’s Classic

Coffs Harbour (Australia), March 15 (IANS) Rookie Avani Prashanth and Pranavi Urs made the cut at the weather-hit Australian Women’s Classic, while the more experienced Diksha Dagar fell short in their campaign in the first event Down Under.

Avani, playing her maiden season, added even par 70 to her first round 72 and was 2-over for 36 holes and was lying tied 40th. Pranavi Urs (73-71) made the cut on the line as Top-60, and ties will play the final round. Pranavi is tied 60th. Diksha Dagar, a two-time LET winner, carded 74-73 and missed the cu, which fell at 4-over.

Sarah Kemp, who injured herself seriously in a freak golf cart accident and broke her tibia and fibula eight months ago, made a sensational comeback with a 62 (-8) and moved into a 2-shot lead with one round to go.

Even as an amateur, Avani has had top-10 finishes to her credit on the Ladies European Tour (LET) event, including her home event, the Women’s Indian Open, and she bogeyed twice on the front nine on the third and the ninth. She staged a good comeback on the back nine with birdies on the 11th and 17th.

Pranavi, winner of her home Tour’s Order of Merit, had three birdies against four bogeys.

The 39-year-old, Kemp, who was out of action since August, is back from surgery and rallied with a round that had one bogey and nine birdies. Starting the day four shots behind the first-day trio of leaders, Kemp bogeyed the par-4 second but then played fantastically with nine birdies in 17 holes to move 10-under par for the tournament.

In a tie for second on eight-under-par sit Belgium’s Manon De Roey (69-63) and Wales’s Darcey Harry (64-68). The former had a fantastic day at the office, holding several long putts en route to a round of 63 (-7).

One shot back from the duo in a tie for fourth are Sweden’s Moa Folke and Thailand’s Cholcheva Wongras. At just 17 years old, the latter is proving to be one of the stories of the week in Coffs Harbour.

Austria’s Emma Spitz, England’s Cara Gainer, and Ireland’s Lauren Walsh share the sixth spot on six-under-par. After 36 holes, 76 players made the cut, which fell at four-over-par.
