Meghalaya govt to give laptops to Class 10 and 12 students

Shillong, Aug 3 (IANS) The Meghalaya government will provide free laptops to meritorious students who successfully cleared the 2026 Class 10 and Class 12 Board examinations, officials said on Monday.

The Directorate of Information Technology and Communications (DITC) has initiated the process for identifying eligible students who appeared in examinations conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), and the Indian School Certificate (ISC).

Officials said the laptop distribution is aimed at encouraging academic excellence and promoting digital learning among students across the state.

According to the Directorate, students who passed the 2026 MBOSE Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC), Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC), ICSE, ISC and CBSE examinations and satisfy the prescribed eligibility criteria will be considered for the award.

For students belonging to the ICSE, ISC and CBSE Boards, eligibility has been restricted to those who appeared from schools affiliated with their respective Boards and located within Meghalaya.

Officials said the provisional list of eligible meritorious students has already been uploaded on the official website of the Directorate of Information Technology and Communications for verification.

Students whose names appear on the provisional list but who have not yet received any communication regarding the laptop award have been asked to visit the Directorate with their original marksheets, a valid photo identity card and other supporting documents for verification.

The Directorate has also invited students to submit any objections or queries related to the provisional list in writing on or before September 3.

Officials further informed that the online registration portal for the laptop distribution scheme has been opened from August 3 and will remain accessible until September 3.

The initiative is part of the Meghalaya government’s efforts to strengthen digital access in education and reward outstanding academic performance.

Authorities said the verification process will ensure that all eligible students receive the benefits under the scheme in a transparent and timely manner.

Further details regarding the distribution schedule and the handover of laptops will be announced after the completion of the verification process.

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 27 (IANS) With more than 800 pedestrians losing their lives on Kerala’s roads so far this year, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has announced a major crackdown on drivers violating pedestrian safety norms, especially at zebra crossings.

Shockingly, nearly 50 per cent of those killed were senior citizens, underscoring rising concerns over road safety and driver indiscipline.

On Thursday, the MVD pointed out that numerous two-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers have shown little respect for pedestrian rights, often failing to slow down near zebra crossings.

Many vehicles are seen parked directly on pedestrian crossings or even on footpaths, defeating the very purpose of such safety measures.

This, officials say, reflects a “dangerous driving culture” that puts vulnerable road users at grave risk.

As per law, drivers must slow down and stop at least three metres before the zebra crossing if a pedestrian is seen waiting at the edge.

However, authorities note that most drivers instead maintain or increase speed, forcing pedestrians to run or hesitate, often leading to fatal consequences.

“Courtesy to pedestrians and the ability to anticipate their movement is a key criterion to retain a driving licence,” the MVD release stated.

In compliance with a directive from the Kerala High Court, the MVD has ordered stringent enforcement of pedestrian protection laws.

Officers have been authorised to cancel the driving licences of those who violate pedestrian safety rules at zebra crossings.

In addition to licence cancellation, violators will face legal action under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which carries a fine of Rs 2,000.

Drivers parking or stopping vehicles on zebra crossings will also face penalties from both the police and the MVD.

The department has urged the public to report violations and called for greater civic responsibility, emphasising that ensuring pedestrian safety is a collective duty, not just a legal compulsion.

DA case: Allahabad HC seeks CBI, ED response on plea against Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi/Lucknow, May 14 (IANS) The Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow Bench has directed the CBI, Enforcement Directorate (ED), Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) and other authorities to file responses within eight weeks on a petition alleging disproportionate assets against Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

A Division Bench of Justices Rajesh Singh Chauhan and Zafeer Ahmad passed the order while hearing a criminal writ petition filed by Karnataka-based BJP worker S. Vignesh Shishir, who appeared in person.

During the in-chambers hearing, counsel appearing for the CBI informed the Allahabad High Court, on the basis of written instructions dated May 11, that the probe agency had received the petitioner’s complaint and would file its response within eight weeks.

Similarly, counsel for the ED submitted before the Justice Chauhan-led Bench, on the basis of instructions dated May 9, that the federal anti-money laundering agency had also received the complaint and “may verify the allegations”.

Recording the submissions, the Allahabad High Court observed: “It is expected that if the complaint of the petitioner has been received, the allegations of the complaints may be verified as per law. It is needless to say that the CBI or ED may take appropriate steps which are permissible under the law.”

The Allahabad High Court also permitted the petitioner to implead the Union of India through the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs as additional parties in the matter.

It directed that all parties, including the newly impleaded authorities, file their respective counter affidavits within eight weeks and place on record the progress made in respect of the petitioner’s complaint.

The Justice Chauhan-led Bench further ordered that the paper-book and documents filed in the case continue to remain in sealed cover and be kept in safe custody with the Senior Registrar of the Allahabad High Court.

The matter has now been listed for further hearing on July 20 and will again be taken up during in-chambers proceedings.

Earlier, on May 6, the Allahabad High Court had directed that the entire paper-book be sealed and preserved in safe custody after hearing preliminary submissions made by the petitioner, while granting time to the respondent authorities to seek instructions in the matter.

Shishir is the same petitioner at whose instance the Allahabad High Court had earlier directed Uttar Pradesh Police to conduct an inquiry and consider registration of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi over allegations of dual citizenship.

However, the single-judge Bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi, who later recused from hearing the matter, had withdrawn the operative direction, observing that Gandhi, being a prospective accused, ought to be given an opportunity of hearing before any such order could be passed.

BJD’s change of stance on Waqf (Amendment) Bill sparks debate in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, April 4 (IANS) The Biju Janata Dal’s change of stance on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill at the last moment has sparked a heated political debate in Odisha, with the state’s Congress unit alleging that ‘the alliance between BJD and BJP is still intact’.

The BJD has seven members in Rajya Sabha while in Lok Sabha it has no presence.

The BJD had earlier announced to oppose the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

However, Rajya Sabha MP and the party’s National Spokesperson, Sasmit Patra on Thursday, just a few hours before the voting on the Bill in the upper house of the parliament, declared that the BJD MPs are free to vote on the bill as per their conscience.

“We deeply respect the diverse sentiments expressed by different sections of the minority communities regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Our Party, having taken these views into careful consideration, has entrusted our Members in the Rajya Sabha with the responsibility of exercising their conscience in the best interest of justice, harmony and the rights of all communities, should the Bill come up for voting. There is no Party Whip,” he posted on his X handle on Thursday.

Later, speaking to mediapersons, Patra also said that he had voted in favour of the Waqf Bill in Rajya Sabha.

Meanwhile, senior party leader and RS MP Munna Khan openly opposed the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

The opposition Congress on Friday criticised the BJD party over the sudden change in stance in connection with the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

“The BJD MPs had to vote on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill by listening to their inner conscience – their senior-most leader Sasmit Patra voted in favour of the government. The alliance between BJD and BJP is intact. They can’t hoodwink the people of Odisha by pretending to be opposing each other. Congress is the only alternative in Odisha,” alleged the Odisha Congress on its X handle.

Following the embarrassment, senior party leader Prasanna Acharya said that it has been decided to oppose the Bill during the parliamentary party meeting.

“As per my knowledge and the information shared by MPs, it was decided in the parliamentary party meeting to oppose the Bill… the BJD has always been a secular party. However, I came to know today that there was no party whip and some voted in its favour and some others voted against the Bill. We will soon meet our party President and all the details regarding the sudden development can only be ascertained after discussions with him,” said Acharya.

Notably, the Parliament passed the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, after it was approved by the Rajya Sabha early on Friday. The Lok Sabha approved the Bill early on Thursday, after nearly 12 hours of debate, with 288 votes in favour and 232 against.
