Assam intensifies child marriage crackdown, 11,196 arrested in five years

Guwahati, Aug 20 (IANS) Assam has intensified its campaign against child marriage, with the state government on Thursday announcing a special drive by the Assam Police to crack down on offenders and declaring November 1 as a key milestone in its efforts to curb the practice.

The campaign draws on the legacy of Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha, regarded as the founder and flag bearer of Bor Asom, with the state government linking its social reform agenda to the broader objective of ensuring justice and creating new opportunities for women and children.

According to figures shared by the Assam government, a total of 12,196 cases of child marriage have been registered in the state over the last five years, while 11,196 people have been arrested in connection with such cases.

The state government has described the intensified enforcement campaign as the “death knell for child marriage in Assam”, underlining its determination to eliminate the practice through sustained police action and social intervention.

The special intensive drive is aimed at identifying and taking action against those involved in child marriages, with Assam Police stepping up enforcement across districts.

Child marriage has remained a major social challenge in parts of Assam, with the state government in recent years adopting a strong enforcement-oriented approach.

Authorities have said that early marriage has serious consequences for girls, including disruption of education, early pregnancy, health risks and reduced economic opportunities.

The latest campaign seeks to reinforce the message that preventing child marriage is not merely a law-and-order responsibility but also an important component of women’s empowerment and child welfare.

The state government has repeatedly highlighted the need to ensure that girls remain in school and have access to opportunities that can improve their social and economic prospects.

The campaign also comes against the backdrop of Assam’s broader push to strengthen women’s empowerment through welfare and livelihood initiatives, while simultaneously taking strict action against practices considered harmful to children.

By combining legal enforcement with a focus on education, empowerment and opportunities, the Assam government aims to create greater awareness about the consequences of child marriage and encourage communities to reject the practice.

With thousands of cases registered and arrests made over the past five years, the intensified drive is expected to place renewed focus on enforcement while strengthening the state’s campaign to protect children and secure a better future for Assam’s women and girls.

Kolkata, Oct 8 (IANS) With indications of the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise starting in West Bengal after October 15 becoming evident at a crucial meeting on SIR preparedness in the state here on Wednesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the practicality of the deadline, considering October is the festival month for the state.

“Is it possible to begin the SIR within this month amid the festival days? Will the Election Commission of India (ECI) operate at the behest of the BJP? Or will the commission ensure the democratic rights of the people?” the Chief Minister questioned.

On this issue, she also launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that all the actions over the SIR were happening following his instructions.

“This is his game. He is operating like an acting Prime Minister. I would request the Prime Minister not to believe him,” the Chief Minister said.

Reacting to her comments on the Home Minister, Union Minister of State for Education, and the former BJP state president in West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar, said that the Chief Minister was making such statements since she is afraid that the SIT will result in the deletion of names of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators in the voters’ list of West Bengal.

“She is one who is acting like a Mir Jafar for the Bengali Hindus. She is conspiring to turn West Bengal into another Bangladesh,” Majumdar said.

The Chief Minister also launched a scathing attack against the Union government and claimed that the current central government was the most autocratic government that Indians have ever witnessed.

“I have experience with several Union government regimes before. But have never come across such arrogance and such an autocratic nature of any government. They are in power today. Tomorrow, they might not be in power. Nothing is permanent,” the Chief Minister said.

Punjab CM lays stone of rural link road in Khemkaran ​

Chandigarh, March 7 (IANS) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a Rs 137-crore rural link road project in the border constituency of Khemkaran and said the AAP government was focusing on strengthening infrastructure, employment opportunities, and improved public services in border regions. ​

He also highlighted progress in canal irrigation, employment generation, and education reforms. ​

Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone, CM Mann said, “From roads to schools to playgrounds and industry, I assure you that my government is committed to ensuring everything in this area. Successive governments ignored the development of border areas, but the AAP government has made dedicated efforts for their progress. ​

“We are committed to the welfare of the residents of these regions who are true patriots of the country.” ​

The Chief Minister said that, for the first time in the history of Punjab, the state’s industrial policy provides incentives to industrialists willing to establish units in border areas. ​

“Nine thrust sectors and borders, as well as Kandi areas, are being given 25 per cent additional incentives. Border districts such as Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ferozepur, and Fazilka have historically seen lower investment due to perceived geographical risks,” he said. ​

Emphasising employment generation, CM Mann said, “We want to place a tiffin in the hands of our youth by providing them employment so that they stay away from syringes and the menace of drugs. Idle hands are the devil’s workshop, so we are making every effort to ensure that youth get jobs and do not fall prey to social evils. The AAP government has already provided more than 63,000 government jobs to the youth.” ​

Highlighting achievements in irrigation, he said, “When we assumed office, only 21 per cent of canal water was being used for irrigation. Today this figure has risen to 68 per cent, and it will reach 85 per cent by the coming paddy season. A total of 6,900 km of canals and 18,349 watercourses have been revived to ensure water reaches tail-end farmers.” ​

He said the government has spent Rs 6,500 crore to rejuvenate the canal system, enabling canal water to reach 1,365 villages for the first time, and added that work on constructing more than 49,000 km of roads is underway at a cost of Rs 16,209 crore to improve rural connectivity. ​

BJP govt’s push for development driven by corruption, alleges Gaurav Gogoi

Guwahati, Jan 20 (IANS) Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that the BJP-led government’s aggressive push for large infrastructure projects in the state is driven more by corruption than by public interest.

Addressing reporters here, Gogoi claimed that projects such as elevated corridors and flyovers are being projected as symbols of development, but in reality serve as avenues for personal enrichment. He alleged that these projects largely benefit a select group of contractors and companies, many of whom are based outside Assam and are allegedly close to the ruling establishment.

The Congress leader said that the Chief Minister’s reaction to criticism reflected discomfort with questions being raised on transparency. He alleged that instead of easing public hardship or addressing core developmental needs, large infrastructure projects have become instruments to divert public funds.

Gogoi also pointed to what he described as growing internal tensions within the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, particularly as the state moves closer to the Assembly elections. He claimed that BJP ticket aspirants are being pressured to distance themselves from former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, citing recent remarks and omissions as signs of discord within the party.

He asserted that, unlike the BJP, the Congress does not suffer from internal instability in the state. Clarifying his party’s political position, Gogoi categorically ruled out any alliance with the All India United Democratic Front. He said the Congress has clearly conveyed its stand and will not enter into any understanding with the AIUDF, though discussions with other political actors are ongoing.

Gogoi further claimed that several leaders from the BJP and the Asom Gana Parishad have been in touch with the Congress, expressing dissatisfaction within their respective parties. Commenting on a recent pre-election survey projecting him as a preferred Chief Ministerial choice among minority voters, Gogoi dismissed opinion polls as unreliable.

He said the only verdict that matters is that of the people at the ballot box.

Concluding his remarks, Gogoi accused the present government of undermining Assam’s cultural identity and dignity, alleging that governance marked by corruption and inappropriate conduct has left citizens feeling disillusioned and humiliated.
