AMU student from J&K found hanging; second suicide in a month

Aligarh, Aug 30 (IANS) In a second such case reported within the span of four weeks, an undergraduate student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his rented accommodation here, police said.

According to official sources, the student left behind a note, describing himself as a “loser”. He said that he was no longer able to cope with the issues he was facing and urged his parents to forgive him.

AMU Proctor Naved Khan was quoted as saying that the 22-year-old second-year BA (Hons) student of Foreign Languages (French) was found hanging at his rented accommodation in the Civil Lines area adjoining the university campus on Friday.

He added that the student had returned from his hometown in Jammu and Kashmir about four days ago.

Earlier in the month, a 19-year-old undergraduate student of the university was similarly found hanging in her hostel room at the AMU’s I G Hall, according to a senior university official. The teenager hailed from Kolkata, the official said.

Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has been witnessing major protests over a probe into the alleged suicide of a 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student.

The student purportedly died by suicide after jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the campus last week.

According to police, a PCR call about a student allegedly jumping from a building on the IIT Delhi campus was received at Kishangarh Police Station at around 8:33 a.m on August 22.

Police personnel immediately rushed to the spot, where the injured student was found and subsequently shifted to the IIT Delhi campus hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead.

The crime scene investigation team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team inspected and collected evidence.

Further investigation revealed that the student had entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 a.m. that day. He subsequently went to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift to the sixth floor and allegedly jumped from the front side of the building.

While no suicide note was recovered from the spot, a mobile phone was found in the pocket of the deceased, which was subsequently sent for examination.

Kerala CM Vijayan on a ‘hot seat’ as allegations mount against his office

Thiruvananthapuram, April 12 (IANS) As Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s tenure enters its ninth consecutive year, a series of allegations involving his close aides and even family members have placed him under intense political heat.

The controversy surrounding his daughter, Veena Vijayan, escalated on Friday when the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) filed a charge sheet in connection with an alleged illegal financial deal between her now-defunct IT firm, Exalogic, and Kochi-based Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL). The court, after a detailed examination, accepted the charge sheet and formally registered a case.

Simultaneously, another trouble brewed for Vijayan’s office as the Kerala High Court ordered a CBI probe into allegations of disproportionate assets against his Chief Principal Secretary, K.M. Abraham.

The probe follows a petition by noted public activist Joemon Puthenpurackal, known for his persistent legal activism.

Abraham, a former Chief Secretary who retired in 2017, also serves as the CEO of the influential Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), making him a key figure in the state’s development apparatus.

Following the court order, retired DGP Jacob Thomas, once a close aide of Vijayan who later fell out of favour, launched a scathing attack.

“The Vigilance Court had ordered a probe against Abraham and me in 2016. I went ahead with it, but he used his power to stall the investigation. The Chief Minister must explain why Abraham continues to hold such a powerful post,” Thomas said, adding, “He will now become another Sivasankar.”

Sivasankar, a former Principal Secretary to Vijayan, was arrested twice in connection with the infamous Kerala gold smuggling case due to his ties with key accused Swapna Suresh. After serving time in jail, he returned to government service post suspension, only to be jailed again after retirement. He is currently out on bail.

In 2023, CM Vijayan’s Additional Private Secretary, C.M. Raveendran, was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in the Wadakkanchery Life Mission money laundering case — the same case linked to Sivasankar’s second arrest.

Another aide under the spotlight is P. Sasi, Vijayan’s high-profile Political Secretary.

Former CPI(M)-backed independent MLA P.V. Anvar shocked many when he alleged that Sasi owns several petrol pumps through benami deals and leads a powerful syndicate operating across the state.

Despite submitting these allegations in writing to both Vijayan and the CPI(M) state secretary, no action was taken. Anvar later resigned as MLA and joined the Congress-led opposition. He is now set to campaign actively against Vijayan in the upcoming by-election for the seat he vacated.

The appointment of Kannur University Associate Professor, the wife of Vijayan’s Private Secretary, K.K. Ragesh, has also sparked controversy. Allegations that her appointment violated UGC norms are now before the Supreme Court, with a verdict awaited.

Adding to the growing list of controversies, Vijayan’s Press Secretary, P.M. Manoj, made headlines recently after a local court sentenced his brother to life imprisonment for the 2005 murder of BJP worker Suraj in Kannur.

With these multiple allegations converging, the Congress-led opposition and the BJP have dubbed Vijayan as one of Kerala’s most corrupt chief ministers.

The CBI probe into Abraham’s assets is expected to be a key talking point for the opposition during the upcoming Nilambur assembly by-election.

‘Advantage Assam’: State Cabinet expresses gratitude towards PM Modi

Guwahati, March 4 (IANS) The Assam government has expressed its sincere gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his contribution towards arranging the investment summit ‘Advantage Assam’ 2.0.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday: “In a cabinet meeting here today, the #AssamCabinet has expressed its sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji for his extraordinary efforts to promote our state as an investment destination during #AdvantageAssam2. We have also finalised a mechanism to scrutinise the MoUs signed.”

The recently held investment summit–Advantage Assam 2.0, has attracted investments worth at least Rs 4.5 lakh crore.

“Sectors like hydrocarbons, which is our forte, and mines and minerals have attracted the most investment. We are now focusing on making Assam a developed industrial state like it was in 1947. Assam was the first industrial state of the country,” Sarma earlier said.

According to him, the success of the summit highlights Assam’s growing potential as an investment hub.

“With its abundant natural resources, strategic geographic location, and progressive policies, the state has been steadily working towards establishing itself as a key player in India’s industrial landscape. The massive investment influx is expected to boost employment opportunities, infrastructure development, and overall economic growth in the region,” Sarma stated.

Meanwhile, the state cabinet also decided to set up Ratan Tata Electronics City in Jagiroad.

The Cheif Minister mentioned: “In recognition of the unparalleled contribution of the Tata Group and its Chairman Emeritus, Late Shri Ratan Naval Tata (the first Assam Vaibhav awardee) himself, Cabinet has approved the naming of the entire area covered by Assam Semiconductor & Electronics Logistics Park (ASELP), Jagiroad Tata OSAT center, proposed township with the social Infrastructure, as Ratan Tata Electronics City (RTEC), Jagiroad.”

Sarma noted that the semiconductor plants in Gujarat and Assam, alongside upcoming projects in quantum physics and artificial intelligence, would be developed in India.

He stressed that India would provide the skilled workforce needed in these sectors, not only for the nation but also for global demands.

“To prepare for this, I urge the need to equip India’s youth with the necessary skills. The semiconductor project at Jagiroad is progressing rapidly, with production expected to begin by the end of the year,” he said.

Two children killed, dozen injured in school van-SUV collision in Kota

Kota, Nov 1 (IANS) Two schoolchildren were killed and more than a dozen others injured when a school van collided head-on with an SUV in Rajasthan’s Kota district on Saturday morning, police said.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the accident, near the 132 kV grid station in the Etawa police station area, occurred when a tyre of the school’s van suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control. The van veered into the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming SUV.

The impact of the collision was so severe that both vehicles overturned, with the SUV rolling nearly 20 feet away from the road. The front portion of the van was completely mangled, and school bags and books were scattered across the roadside. Locals who heard the loud crash and children’s cries rushed to the scene.

Several villagers broke the van’s windows to pull out the trapped children and passengers. Police and emergency teams arrived shortly afterwards, and with the help of villagers, all injured children and adults were rushed to the Etawah Sub-District Hospital. Two students were declared dead on arrival. Hospital officials reported that several of the injured sustained fractures and head injuries and were later referred to Kota’s MBS Hospital for advanced treatment.

The deceased children were students of a private school in Etawa. The accident site was marked by twisted metal and shattered glass, reflecting the intensity of the collision. “It appears that a tyre burst caused the driver to lose control, leading to the head-on crash,” a police officer at the scene said.

As word of the tragedy spread, families of the students gathered at the hospital, where scenes of grief and mourning unfolded. The cries of parents echoed through the corridors as doctors attended to the injured.

Police have seized both vehicles and begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over road safety and vehicle maintenance standards for school transport in the region.
