Jayant Chaudhary meets PM Modi with family ahead of Muzaffarnagar rally

New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by his family.

Chaudhary shared details of the meeting through a post on his X handle, triggering speculation across political circles. The meeting assumes significance as Chaudhary is scheduled to address a massive rally in Muzaffarnagar on September 20.

Political observers are interpreting the pre-rally interaction as an important signal of alignment within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

On Thursday, Chaudhary had extended birthday greetings to the Prime Minister on his X handle. He wrote that he had personally learnt a great deal from observing PM Modi’s work ethic closely. He praised the Prime Minister’s commitment and creative disruption, which, he said, had earned him tremendous public support over many years of service.

Chaudhary expressed confidence that the ‘Seva Sankalp’ taken by citizens on the occasion would inspire greater efforts towards social responsibilities and stronger, inclusive and sustainable growth. Through the birthday message and the subsequent family meeting, Chaudhary has indicated his intent to contest elections in unity with the NDA.

The interaction, coming just days before the Muzaffarnagar rally, has generated considerable discussion from Delhi to Lucknow. Chaudhary also shared a photograph of the meeting in which his wife and two daughters — elder daughter Sahira and younger daughter Ilesha Singh — are visible. Various political interpretations are being drawn from the family nature of the meeting.

With preparations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections gathering pace, both the NDA and the INDIA alliance are intensifying their activities. In this backdrop, Jayant Chaudhary’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi, along with his family, is being viewed as a clear message of solidarity within the NDA.

The Muzaffarnagar rally on September 20 is now expected to further underline the RLD’s position and its continued partnership with the ruling alliance.

Jaipur, June 27 (IANS) A major tragedy was averted during Muharram processions in Jaipur on Friday night after a fire broke out in the dome of the historic ‘Quraishiyan Ka Taziya’ at Badi Chaupar.

The incident occurred late on Friday night, triggering panic among devotees and spectators as flames engulfed the upper portion of the Taziya during the procession.

According to preliminary information, the blaze was triggered when a spark from fireworks being burst during the procession landed on the decorative dome of the Taziya, setting it on fire.

Eyewitnesses said the flames spread rapidly across the upper section, prompting immediate intervention by security personnel and emergency teams deployed at the venue.

Fire brigade personnel, already stationed at Badi Chaupar as part of Muharram security arrangements, rushed to the spot and quickly brought the blaze under control before it could spread further.

Their prompt response prevented the fire from reaching the large crowd or nearby structures, averting what could have turned into a major accident.

The district administration had deployed fire tenders, police personnel and emergency response teams at key locations along the Muharram procession route. Officials said the advance deployment of emergency services played a crucial role in ensuring the situation was brought under control within minutes. No injuries or loss of life were reported in the incident.

The procession resumed after the situation was normalised, and officials confirmed that the fire was extinguished without any major damage beyond the affected portion of the Taziya.

Meawnhile, Muharram was observed with solemnity and devotion across state on Friday as thousands of devotees commemorated the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala. Tazias, symbolic replicas of the mausoleum of Imam Hussain, were installed at various locations across the state, where people gathered throughout the day to offer prayers and floral tributes.

In Jodhpur, a fair-like atmosphere prevailed around the tazias, with devotees from the Muslim community visiting in large numbers. Sweets were offered as niyaz, while sharbat was served at community stalls. Traditional dishes, including haleem, were also prepared and distributed among visitors.

According to Ustad Haji Hameem Baksh, President of the Muharram Ekta Committee, around 27 tazias were installed at prominent locations, including Moti Chowk, Lakhara Bazaar, Umed Chowk, Golnadi, Gulzarpura, Khanda Phalsa, Niyariyon Ka Mohalla, Ishaqiya School, Shahon Ka Baas, Masuriya, Khetanadi and Sursagar Kabir Nagar.

PIL filed in K’taka HC challenging granting of Cabinet rank to 42 legislators

Bengaluru, Feb 14 (IANS) A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed with the Karnataka High Court challenging the state government with regard to according Cabinet rank to 42 people, including Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Members of the Legislative Council (MLC).

The Bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Anjaria and Justice M.I. Arun, allowing the petition has posted the matter for hearing on February 21.

The petition has been filed by Suri Payala, a resident of Bengaluru, who also works with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).

The petitioner has questioned appointment of veteran Congress leader and former minister R.V. Deshpande, MLAs A.S. Ponnanna, Vinay Kulkarni, N.A. Haris and others. It has also sought direction to quash their appointments.

The petition claims that according of Cabinet status to MLAs and MLCs is against the rules as it constitutes an office of profit.

Legislators cannot hold office of profit under Article 191 of the Constitution of India.

The petition further says that the persons who are accorded Cabinet rank status get enhanced salaries, facilities such as car, driver, fuel, house rent allowance and medical reimbursement.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had accommodated his colleagues who had raised the banner of revolt against him after missing the ministerial posts.

Activist and senior counsel J. Sai Deepak representing the petitioner stated that according the positions of chairman and president to various boards and corporations was not an issue, however, granting them Cabinet rank status is against Article 164 (1A) of the Constitution, which restricts the size of the Cabinet.

The counsel further submitted, 34 legislators were given Cabinet rank in January 26 through a government order.

Eight legislators already held the Cabinet rank status. The petition is aimed at preventing unwarranted governmental expansion and preserving the integrity of the legislature.

The Bench noted that Counsel Sai Deepak is making an important point and he should have appeared in person.

Counsel Sai Deepak apologised for appearing in virtual mode as he was briefed about the matter one day earlier. He also requested for a short date and stated that it will be his privilege to appear before the court.

V-P Radhakrishnan to celebrate International Day of Yoga in Leh​

New Delhi, June 18 (IANS) Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan will undertake his first official visit to the Union Territory of Ladakh from Friday to Sunday and participate in the International Day of Yoga celebrations in Leh, an official said.​

During the visit, the Vice-President will travel to the Vibrant Village of Lukung on June 20, where he will interact with local Self-Help Groups and witness developmental initiatives being undertaken in the border region under the Vibrant Villages Programme, said an official statement issued on Thursday.​

Later in the day, the Vice-President will pay his respects at the War Memorial, it said.​

On June 21, the Vice President will participate in the International Day of Yoga celebrations in Leh. The event will witness the participation of youth, armed forces personnel, and members of various organisations in promoting the message of holistic health and well-being through yoga, the statement said.​

In another development, Radhakrishnan called upon universities and educational institutions across the country to join the Drug-Free Campus Campaign he launched last year.​

He asked universities to encourage students to actively participate in the campaign. He emphasised that collective action and sustained awareness among the youth are essential to realising the vision of a Drug-Free India.​

In a post on X, the Vice-President said, “I had launched the Drug-Free Campus Campaign and the e-pledge platform at the University of Delhi earlier this year as its Chancellor, urging students to become ambassadors of a Nasha Mukt Bharat and take a stand against the menace of drug abuse.”​

“I am pleased to note that the University has taken a significant step in the right direction for the (Nasha Mukt Parisar Abhiyaan). Through a collective effort, over 53,000 students have taken the mandatory pledge, contributing to the vision of fostering a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous nation,” he said.​

The Vice-President added, “I urge other universities to also join hands in this endeavour and motivate their students to participate in this campaign to realise the goal of Drug-Free India.”​
