J’khand Minister clarifies ‘only cautioned against fake BLOs’, vows to safeguard all voters’ names

New Delhi/Ranchi, Nov 24 (IANS) Jharkhand Minister and senior Congress leader Irfan Ansari, on Monday, rebutted allegations of threatening election officials, terming certain media reports “deliberate misrepresentation” and reaffirming his commitment to protecting voters’ Constitutional rights ahead of the second phase of Assembly polls.

In a detailed clarification posted on his official X account, the Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare said: “Some media outlets have distorted my statement, which I condemn in the strongest terms. I only said that certain fraudulent elements in our area are impersonating fake BLOs (Booth Level Officers) to scare and extort money from poor and innocent citizens. Strictest action must be taken against such criminals. If any suspicious person approaches to delete names or indulge in illegal activities, immediately inform me and the administration. BLOs are our respected officers of the Election Commission of India — no fraud can ever take their place. I only demanded that the Election Commission conduct the entire voter-list revision and verification process with complete transparency so that not a single poor, tribal, Dalit or common citizen is wrongly deleted from the electoral rolls. Moreover, implementation of any proposal like Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Jharkhand will directly impact crores of people. Therefore, safeguarding public voice and Constitutional rights is paramount. I remain fully committed to defending democracy, the Constitution and the rights of every Jharkhandi.”

The controversy erupted after a video clip of Ansari’s public meeting in Jamtara went viral on Saturday evening.

Opposition BJP leaders accused him of “threatening BLOs on camera” and demanded immediate action by the Election Commission, including registration of FIR and removal from the state Cabinet.

The Election Commission is learnt to have sought a report from Jamtara district election officer regarding the alleged impersonation complaints.

Sources said the poll panel has already directed police to register cases against anyone found posing as fake BLOs.

Budget date to be announced soon, says Karnataka CM

Davanagere (Karnataka), Feb 9 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday stated that the date for the state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 will be announced soon.

CM Siddaramaiah is all set to present the Karnataka budget, his 17th overall, making him the longest-serving Finance Minister and CM to present budgets.

The 2026-27 budget will be Siddaramaiah’s 17th, a record for any Finance Minister in Karnataka. The CM has already started holding preparatory meetings with various government departments.

He was speaking to the media at the helipad inside the Sri Maharshi Valmiki Gurpeeth premises here.

The Chief Minister said preparations for the State Budget were underway and that the date for its presentation would be announced soon. He further said that there has been a demand for the establishment of a tribal university in the State and that the government would examine the proposal and take a decision.

The announcement has assumed significance politically. According to Congress insiders, this announcement serves as a strong signal of Siddaramaiah’s intention to complete his full term as Chief Minister, countering rumours of a leadership change.

Responding to media queries on the Metro fare hike, the Chief Minister said that Metro fares are fixed by the Metro chairman appointed by the Central government and that the State government has no role in the decision.

When asked about reports of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar travelling to Delhi to discuss the Metro fare issue, he said the media should seek a response from Shivakumar himself.

The Chief Minister alleged that the agreement between India and the United States (US) would be unfair to farmers and claimed that the Prime Minister had bowed to pressure from the US.

Responding to demands for a ministerial berth for members of the Valmiki community, Siddaramaiah said no ministers had been removed from the Cabinet and that resignations had occurred due to unavoidable circumstances. He said the issue would be considered during the next Cabinet expansion.

Responding to a query on whether Minister S.S. Mallikarjun had submitted his resignation to the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah said the claim was far from the truth.

Meanwhile, taking to social media X, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address is an act of cowardice. For the first time in India’s parliamentary history, this motion was passed without the Prime Minister replying. A Prime Minister who avoids Parliament avoids accountability.”

“What makes this episode even more disturbing is that the government first silenced the Opposition and then chose silence itself. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, was not allowed to complete his speech when he raised serious national security concerns and sought to place on record excerpts from an article based on the book by former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane,” the CM stated.

With questions left unanswered, the Prime Minister chose not to appear in the Lok Sabha at all, CM Siddaramaiah charged.

“The partisan conduct of Speaker Om Birla, who justified this unprecedented departure from parliamentary convention, has further damaged the dignity of the Lok Sabha. The Speaker is meant to defend Parliament, not act as a shield for the executive,” he said.

SC fixes May 14 for hearing on pleas against law dropping CJI from EC appointment panel

New Delhi, April 16 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Wednesday fixed May 14 for hearing on a clutch of petitions challenging the law passed by the Parliament, which excludes the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the process of appointment of top officials of the Election Commission.

After advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing on behalf of NGO, the Association for Democratic Reforms, mentioned the matter for urgent hearing, a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant said that it would hear next month the pleas challenging the validity of the Chief Election Commissioner and the other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Condition of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023.

On March 19, the Justice Kant-led Bench fixed April 16 for hearing, saying that it would ensure that not many urgent cases are listed on the fixed date and the matter is listed high on the board.

In March 2023, a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court had held that the appointment of top officials of the Election Commission shall be done by the President on the advice of a panel comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, and the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

“We declare that the appointment of the CEC and the other ECs shall be made on the recommendations made by a three-member Committee comprising the Prime Minister, LoP of the Lok Sabha and in case no LoP is available, the leader of the largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha in terms of numerical strength, and the Chief Justice of India,” said the apex court, clarifying that its guidelines shall be in effect until Parliament makes a law in consonance with Article 324(2) of the Constitution.

After the apex court verdict, the Parliament introduced legislation providing that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and the other Election Commissioners (ECs) will be appointed by the President on the recommendation of a Selection Committee consisting of the PM, the Leader of the Opposition (or the largest opposition party) in the Lok Sabha, and a Union Cabinet Minister to be nominated by the PM.

Several PILs were filed before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Chief Election Commissioner and the other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Condition of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023.

One of the pleas filed by a Noida-based lawyer sought directions to set aside the gazette notification issued by the Union government on December 28, 2023, and to include the Chief Justice of India in the selection committee for the appointment of the CEC and ECs. Further, it sought direction to the Union of India for implementing an independent and transparent system of selection, constituting a neutral and independent selection committee for appointment of the CEC and other ECs.
