Champions Trophy: India-Pak clash on Feb 23 in Dubai, final on March 9

Dubai, Dec 24 (IANS) India will take on defending champions and arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on February 23 in the Champions Trophy 2025 as the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced the schedule for the marquee tournament, set to begin on February 19.

In the tournament opener, hosts Pakistan will take on New Zealand in Karachi with the final scheduled for March 9. The eight-team tournament will feature 15 matches, played across venues in Pakistan and Dubai.

The teams are divided into two groups: Group A of the tournament features current Champions Trophy holders and hosts Pakistan, along with India, New Zealand and Bangladesh, while Group B features Cricket World Cup 2023 champions Australia, alongside Afghanistan, England and South Africa.

Pakistan will host most of the matches, but all of India’s group games and the first semi-final will be played in Dubai.

In Pakistan, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi will be the three venues to play host to the tournament. Each Pakistan venue will feature three group games apiece, with Lahore hosting the second semi-final.

If India qualifies for the final, it will also be moved to Dubai; otherwise, Lahore will host the championship match. Reserve days are scheduled for both semi-finals and the final.

The Dubai leg begins on February 20 with India taking on Bangladesh. Group B campaign begins on February 21, with Afghanistan squaring up against South Africa in Karachi.

A big weekend then kicks off with rivals England and Australia set to clash in Lahore on February 22, with the much-anticipated Pakistan-India clash set for the day later.

BGT 2024-25: India should bat first even if there are challenging conditions, says Hayden

New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has advised India to bat first in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, starting on December 14, even if the conditions on offer at the Gabba in Brisbane are challenging.

The current five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is locked 1-1 after Australia beat India by 10 wickets at Adelaide Oval. The last time India played a Test in Brisbane, they outclassed Australia by three wickets to win the 2020/21 series 2-1, on the back of Rishabh Pant’s heroic 89 not out.

“Brisbane, different ball game! It’s a home game, but it’s actually a very good game for India as well because they’ve got memories of the last time they encountered Australia in the BGT!”

“India must bat better, they must bat for time. They must bat a day of test match cricket. Under a day, unacceptable. Has to be in that 350 zone. India should bat first even if there are challenging conditions,” said Hayden to Star Sports.

Hayden also spoke about how the Indian bowlers, especially the fast bowlers, can get rid of Australian batters early on by bowling mostly in the channel outside off-stump. At Adelaide, India were unable to take out Travis Head early, who went on to make a match-defining 140.

“And India, when they do get a chance to bowl, they need to rely on hovering in that fourth, fifth stump line a bit more. And most importantly, they need to use their bounce. It’s a key arsenal as part of a fast bowling unit in Brisbane. The red ball will definitely be more familiar in terms of test match cricket. Australia have the running with the pink ball, they won so much with it!”

Tim Southee matches Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record in his farewell Test

Wellington, Dec 14 (IANS) New Zealand pacer Tim Southee has equalled former West Indies batter Chris Gayle’s six-hitting record during his final Test appearance at the Seddon Park on Saturday.

Southee and Gayle now have an equal number of sixes – 98 – in Test cricket only behind Adam Gilchrist (100), Brendon McCullum (107) and Ben Stokes (133).

Southee came to bat at 272/8 in the first innings of the third Test against England on the opening day. He received a guard of honour from England players in his farewell Test.

Southee faced Ben Stokes on the first ball of his innings and missed it completely. However, in Stokes’s next over, Southee unleashed two massive sixes over mid-wicket and deep square-leg, followed by a single off the fifth ball. Continuing his explosive form, Southee hammered the first ball of Gus Atkinson’s next over for six over mid-wicket and edged the subsequent delivery to the point boundary.

Atkinson eventually got his revenge when Southee mistimed a slog, and Brydon Carse took the catch. Southee departed after a blistering 10-ball 23, with a strike rate of 230, marking it the third-fastest Test innings by a New Zealand batter with a 10-ball cut-off. Remarkably, the second spot on the list also belongs to Southee, courtesy of his 10-ball 24 not out against Sri Lanka in 2019.

During his innings, Southee’s second six tied him with Jacques Kallis at fifth on the all-time Test six-hitting list with 97 sixes. The third six placed him level with Chris Gayle in fourth place. With just two more sixes, he could become the fourth cricketer to reach 100 Test sixes, surpassing Adam Gilchrist’s tally with one additional hit.

Three unique factors underscore Southee’s extraordinary numbers: he has never batted in the top seven, boasts a better six-hitting frequency than anyone else, and relies more on sixes than fours for his scoring.

New Zealand were 315/9 at stumps on Day 1 with Mitchell Santner unbeaten on 50 while Will O’Rourke is yet to open his account. Earlier, captain Tom Latham scored 63 while Will Young and Kane Williamson accumulated 42 and 44, respectively.

For England, Matthew Potts and Gus Atkinson bagged three scalps each while Brydon Carse got hold of two dismissals.
