AI Summit protest: Curbs imposed on Youth Cong chief Uday Bhanu Chib’s bail till March 6

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS) In a dramatic turn of events, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) President Uday Bhanu Chib was granted bail in a midnight hearing in the case related to the shirtless protest at the AI Summit but, within hours, the decision was put on hold till March 6 by another Delhi court on Saturday, a lawyer said.

While Judicial Magistrate First Class Vanshika Mehta had granted the IYC President bail at midnight noting that he was not a flight risk, a sessions court put curbs on his bail till March 6 on a plea filed by the Delhi Police on Saturday afternoon, a lawyer added.

The sessions court will take up the matter on March 6 and till then Chib is likely to remain in judicial custody.

While granting bail, the Patiala House Court’s duty magistrate had said that no person would be devoid of personal liberty on mere conjectures or primarily because the co-accused are yet to be arrested.

The magistrate granted bail to Chib on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and ordered him to surrender his passport and electronic gadgets to the court.

Just before the bail was granted by the Magistrate, the Delhi Police Crime Branch had filed an application in the court late Friday night seeking a seven-day extension of Chib’s police custody.

Following the defence lawyer’s bail application, the duty magistrate granted Chib relief and bail, saying that the Crime Branch failed to provide sufficient reasons for the extension of his remand.

The granting of bail to the IYC President by the magistrate around midnight was welcomed by the Congress on Saturday which claimed that “truth and justice have prevailed”.

However, by Saturday evening an interim curb was imposed on the IYC’s bail till March 6.

According to the grounds of arrest, Chib has been accused of being the main conspirator in organising an unlawful assembly on February 20 at the Bharat Mandapam during the AI Impact Summit and Expo 2026, where slogans were raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and alleged attempts were made to incite a riot-like situation.

Chib was arrested after nearly 15 hours of questioning at the Tilak Marg police station in connection with the shirtless protest held on final day of the India AI Impact Summit.

The protest had triggered a political row after the Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the Congress demonstration as an attempt to tarnish India’s global image, while the Congress defended it as a peaceful protest reflecting concerns of the youth.

Lucknow, April 3 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Minority Affairs Minister Danish Ansari on Thursday claimed that the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, will open new avenues for the development of Muslims.

Talking to IANS, he pointed out positive changes the Bill will usher in the lives of Muslims, who celebrated its passage in the Lok Sabha with the distribution of sweets.

He shared that if the said Bill becomes legislation, it will ensure proper auditing of the Waqf Board, remove encroachments and lead to representation of the Pasmanda Muslims in the board, benefiting the community.

“This bill was the need of the hour and will stop people who occupied properties of the Waqf, considered God’s property, as their personal and misused it,” the Minister further said.

Launching a scathing attack at the opposition leaders, including All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Akbaruddin Owaisi, who said the day of the Waqf Amendment Bill’s passage in the Lok Sabha will be remembered as a ‘Black Day’ and it is unconstitutional, Ansari said these people cannot see development of Pasmanda Muslims.

Claiming “mismanagement” of Waqf properties, he said: “All such properties in the country are valued at Rs 1.25 lakh crore, which should generate a revenue of over Rs 1,250 crore annually. But currently, it is generating only Rs 150 crore in revenue. Around Rs 1,100 crore is going into whose pockets.”

“The right amount of revenue could have led to the opening of more than 800 colleges every year for Muslim youths, 300 hospitals and hundreds of skill development centres,” he further said.

Sharing the data of Waqf properties in few districts of Uttar Pradesh, Ansari said: “In every district of Uttar Pradesh, there are thousands of Waqf properties, Bijnor (4697), Balrampur (4,248), Moradabad (3295) Lucknow (3072), Muzaffarnagar (3606), Aligarh (1400) and Kasganj (575).”

Ansari urged Muslims of the area to inspect how many such places have been transformed into charitable properties.

Hailing the amendment, he said: “It was needed for a Viksit Bharat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi understood this and dedicated it for the welfare of Muslims. Modi government is following Allah’s will, but a section of people are trying to manipulate Muslims.”

Suspended Congress MLAs make arrangements for bedding in Rajasthan Assembly

Jaipur, Feb 21 (IANS) As Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra and five other MLAs were suspended from the Assembly, former chief minister Sachin Pilot on Friday condemned the act, demanding the revocation of their suspension.

Meanwhile, the suspended MLAs have decided to spend the night in the Well of the House and arrangements are being made for their bedding and dinner.

On Friday, during the Question Hour, there was an uproar over the comment made about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Due to the increasing uproar, the proceedings of the House had to be adjourned three times. When the proceedings resumed at 4 O’clock, the uproar of Congress MLAs continued in the Well. Looking at the ruckus, Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg proposed the suspension of Congress MLAs.

Soon after, Speaker Vasudev Devnani suspended Govind Singh Dotasra, Deputy Leader of Opposition Ramkesh Meena, Amin Kagzi, Zakir Hussain Gesawat, Hakeem Ali Khan and Sanjay Kumar Jatav for the remaining period of the budget session.

Meanwhile, Sachin Pilot took to X handle and said, “Today, a minister of the state’s BJP government made a comment on former Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi, which was condemned and Congress MLAs including the Leader of Opposition @TikaRamJullyINC expressed their objection.”

“Now in connection with this matter, 6 MLAs including the Congress State President @GovindDotasra have been suspended. It is clear from this that the BJP does not want the proceedings of the Assembly to continue and such baseless statements are being made continuously.”

The BJP should express regret over the remarks made by the minister in the House, remove him from the proceedings and end the suspension of Congress MLAs, he added.

BJP minister, in an apparent jibe at Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, referred to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as “aapki dadi” (your grandmother).

Amid slogan-shouting and a demand for an apology by Congress MLAs, many of whom trooped into the Well of the House, the Assembly was adjourned thrice and six Congress MLAs were suspended for the remainder of the Budget session.

Meanwhile, former CM Vasundhara Raje also reached the Vidhan Sabha soon after the suspension of these six MLAs and then she had a long meeting with Speaker Vasudev Devnani. Further, efforts were on for a truce till the time of writing this news.

A high-level meeting was going on with Dotasra, Jully, and state ministers Jawahar Singh Bedham and Jogaram Patel.

Naveen Yadav named Congress candidate for Jubilee Hills bypoll

Hyderabad, Oct 8 (IANS) The Congress on Wednesday announced Naveen Yadav as its candidate for by-election to Jubilee Hills Assembly seat, scheduled to be held on November 11.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge approved the candidature of Naveen Yadav, AICC general secretary K. C. Venugopal said in a statement on Wednesday.

As per the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India on Monday, the official notification for the by-election will be issued on October 13, while the last date for filing nominations is October 21.

Scrutiny of nominations will be held on October 22, and withdrawal of candidature will be allowed until October 24.

Counting of votes will take place on November 14, and the election process will be completed by November 16, 2025.

The vacancy is caused by the death of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in June.

As per the final electoral roll published last week, the constituency has 3,99,000 voters — 2,07,382 males, 1,91,593 females and 25 third-gender voters.

In the 2023 Assembly elections, the constituency had 3,85,287 voters.

Thus, there has been an increase of 3.49 per cent voters.

Polling for the by-election will be held across 407 polling stations in 139 locations within the constituency.

In the 2023 elections, Gopinath of BRS had scored a hat-trick by defeating former Indian cricket captain and Congress candidate Mohammed Azharuddin by 16,337 votes.

In a multi-cornered contest, Gopinath had secured 80,549 votes while Azharuddin had polled 64,212 votes.

BJP’s L. Deepak Reddy was at third position with 25,866 votes. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) headed by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had also fielded its candidate but he finished poor fourth with just 7,848 votes.

BRS has announced Gopinath’s wife Maganti Sunitha as its candidate. The BJP has not yet announced its candidate.
