AIMPLB calls for pan-India movement against Waqf (Amendment) Bill

New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) Stepping up its opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Sunday announced a nationwide agitation against the proposed changes in the proposed law.

The top Muslim body lauded the success of the recent Delhi demonstration and informed, via an official statement that its 31-member Action Committee has resolved to adopt all constitutional, legal, and democratic means to oppose what it has termed a “controversial, discriminatory, and damaging” bill.

The AIMPLB, revealing its plans for nationwide agitation said that large sit-in protests will be organised in front of the state assembly in Patna (Bihar) on March 26 and then Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) on March 29.

Many of its office-bearers and senior leaders along with representatives of the religious organisations are expected to participate in the demonstrations.

“Leaders from civil society, personalities from other minority communities and key figures from Dalit, Adivasi, and OBC sections have also confirmed their participation,” the Muslim body said in a press release.

AIMPLB is also understood to have invited the members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), from the Opposition ranks, to participate in their protest against the contentious law.

“In Patna, leaders from JD(U), RJD, Congress, and Lok Janshakti Party, including the Chief Minister of Bihar, have been invited. In Andhra Pradesh, invitations have been sent to the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), YSR Congress, Congress, and left parties,” it further said.

The AIMPLB has chalked out details plans for pan-India protest against the Waqf reforms and will organise sit-ins and protest rallies to bolster its opposition against the bill, in the days to come.

“While the sit-in protest has largely been planned in state capitals, rallies will also be taken out in cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Malerkotla (Punjab), and Ranchi,” it added.

The Muslim body will also seek to build public opinion against the Waqf Amendments, by pushing campaigns on social media and initiating hashtag drives on X (formerly Twitter). The group also plans to submit memorandums to the President through District Magistrates.

S.Q.R. Ilyas, AIMPLB spokesperson also expressed gratitude to the Muslim organisations, civil society groups, and leaders from Dalit, Adivasi, OBC, and other minority communities for making the Delhi demonstration a big success.

Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 19 (IANS) Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated in the Legislative Council in Belagavi Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on Thursday that the state police have detained 159 Bangladeshi nationals and 24 Pakistani nationals staying illegally in the state. In addition to this, investigations revealed that 115 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh have been living in Karnataka.

The question in this regard was raised by BJP MLC D. S. Arun in the Council.

Parameshwara, answering the question stated, “A special unit has been formed to look into the matter of illegal immigrants and tracking them down. Illegal immigration into Indian territory is not a new phenomenon. Illegal immigrants are coming into the country in lakhs.”

“The Indian soldiers are preventing their entry at the borders and in spite of soldiers monitoring the borders, the question remains to be answered how the illegal immigrants manage to sneak into our territory,” Parameshwara underlined.

“We have taken up the task of tracking them down and every year we are verifying and gathering inputs about these persons and deporting them back to their countries,” Parameshwara stated.

Apart from Pakistan and Bangladesh, people from African countries are coming to India and indulging in drug trafficking. “They come to India on student visas and indulge in drug trade. To track them down, the state police department has formed a Special Task Force at the district level,” he stated.

“The state government is constantly engaged in tracking the foreign nationals who are staying illegally in Karnataka,” Parameshwara underlined.

In September, Bengaluru Rural police arrested 17 Pakistani nationals, who were illegally living in Karnataka under Hindu names. The police had filed a chargesheet before a court stating that they forged documents to live in the country.

The police had filed the 1,200-page charge sheet and charged the accused of cheating, forgery, and violating the rules of the Passport Act.

Parameshwara had earlier questioned, “If it is true that the illegal immigrants have been staying in India for 10 years, why did not the intelligence agencies and other institutions track them? Even though the passports were done after much scrutiny, they managed to get them.”

“Many from Bangladesh have come to India. Every day we are nabbing illegal migrants from Bangladesh and deporting them back. They keep on coming. The borders are porous in Bangladesh, the situation has to be tightened at the borders. It is a matter of concern for the Union government and the military,” Parameshwara had stated.

India continues to outpace global peers on economic growth: Centre

New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS) As the fastest-growing large economy, with steady growth projected at 6.7 per cent over the next two fiscal years, India continues to outpace global peers and cement its position as a leader in economic resilience and progress, the government said on Saturday.

The January 2025 edition of the World Bank’s Global Economic Prospects (GEP) report projects India’s economy to grow at a steady rate of 6.7 per cent in both FY26 and FY27, significantly outpacing global and regional peers.

At a time when global growth is expected to remain at 2.7 per cent in 2025-26, this remarkable performance underscores India’s resilience and its growing significance in shaping the world’s economic trajectory, said Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The GEP report credits this extraordinary momentum to a thriving services sector and a revitalised manufacturing base, driven by transformative government initiatives.

From modernising infrastructure to simplifying taxes, these measures are fuelling domestic growth and positioning India as a cornerstone of global economic stability.

“With its closest competitor, China, decelerating to 4 per cent growth next year, India’s rise is more than just a statistic. It is a powerful story of ambition, innovation, and unmatched potential,” the ministry noted.

Complementing the World Bank report, the latest update from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook (WEO) also reinforces India’s strong economic trajectory.

The IMF forecasts India’s growth to remain robust at 6.5 per cent for both 2025 and 2026, aligning with earlier projections from October.

This consistent growth outlook reflects India’s stable economic fundamentals and its ability to maintain momentum despite global uncertainties.

“The continued strength of India’s economic performance, as projected by both the World Bank and IMF, underscores the country’s resilience and highlights the sustained strength of its economic fundamentals, making India a crucial player in the global economic landscape,” the government emphasised.

Growth in India’s services sector is expected to remain robust, while manufacturing activity will strengthen, supported by government efforts to improve logistics infrastructure and streamline tax systems.

Private consumption in India is likely to gain momentum, driven by a stronger labour market, increased access to credit, and lower inflation.

Jammu horticulture department hosts exposure visit programme for farmers

Jammu, Jan 12 (IANS) The Horticulture Department in Jammu organised an exposure visit programme, where farmers were provided with information about various government schemes and support related to agriculture.

Officials present at the exposure visit programme stated that the department is committed to ensuring that every farmer, whether male or female, fully benefits from these schemes.

Local farmers, speaking to IANS, expressed their gratitude towards the Central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They showered praise on PM Modi and the government’s policies in this regard.

Speaking to IANS, Veena said: “We really need these kinds of programmes, because without proper knowledge, if we plant crops, they won’t be as profitable. I am grateful to the officials who made us aware of this through a programme in our block.”

She further added, “Today, we were trained on what things to keep in mind while sowing crops. They explained that if the yield is higher, the profits will also be greater. If we work on all these aspects, we will benefit in the future. I live in a border area, and we don’t have another source of income, so this is a great initiative. I thank PM Modi for thinking about us.”

Local resident Noor Alam said, “Today, we received information about farming during the exposure visit program. We have informed other farmers who came with us about this program. Officials mentioned that if someone owns land or a garden, they can benefit from it.”

During the programme and interactions, officials of the horticulture department and experts of the field informed that for agricultural products like pickles, jams, and dragon fruit, the government provides a 60% subsidy for women and 50% for men.
