AMMK to hold emergency meet of district secretaries as alliance signals emerge ahead of TN polls

Chennai, Jan 20 (IANS) As political alignments in Tamil Nadu enter a decisive phase ahead of the Assembly elections, the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) is set to hold a crucial internal consultation on Wednesday.

AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran will convene an emergency meeting of district secretaries to discuss the party’s stance on a possible electoral alliance. The development comes in the backdrop of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) formally joining hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the forthcoming Assembly elections.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has already ruled out any discussion on re-inducting expelled leaders O. Panneerselvam and V.K. Sasikala into the party fold.

However, when asked specifically about T.T.V. Dhinakaran, Palaniswami avoided giving a direct response, fuelling speculation in political circles.

Adding to the buzz, senior AIADMK leader Sellur Raju said in Madurai that there was nothing wrong in holding talks with Dhinakaran regarding a BJP-led alliance.

His remark followed queries about Dhinakaran’s reported meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which has triggered fresh conjecture about AMMK’s potential entry into the AIADMK–BJP front.

Sources indicate that the possibility of AMMK joining the alliance is being actively explored.

Dhinakaran himself has hinted that an announcement on alliances could be expected, adding weight to the ongoing speculation.

In a parallel political gesture, Dhinakaran congratulated Nitin Nabin on his election as the BJP’s national president, a move seen by observers as a signal of warming ties with the BJP leadership. The timing is significant, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Chennai on January 23 to inaugurate and address a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) campaign rally. Against this politically charged backdrop, Dhinakaran will meet 80 district secretaries from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The emergency consultation will be held at the AMMK party headquarters in Adyar, Chennai, and is expected to chart the party’s future course as alliance equations rapidly evolve in the State.

Patna, Feb 28 (IANS) At least 60 students of Shri Chandpur Primary School in Harnaut block fell ill on Friday after consuming a mid-day meal.

The students complained of stomach-ache and vomiting around two hours after consuming the mead day meal.

The students suspect that the boiled eggs served during lunch may have caused the illness.

Upon receiving the information, local health officials rushed to the school and transported the affected students to Kalyan Vigha Referral Hospital.

Dr. Jitendra Kumar Singh, who led the treatment, confirmed that the students were recovering well.

BPM Manish Kumar reported that 25 students were discharged, while the remaining would be sent home soon.

District Education Officer (DEO) Rajkumar stated that an investigation is underway to determine if the issue stemmed from poor food quality or negligence in preparation.

The education department has assured that monitoring processes will be tightened to eliminate negligence in food preparation and distribution.

“Food samples have been sent to a laboratory for testing, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible,” Rajkumar said.

Authorities have assured that measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

The mid-day meal program is crucial for nutritional support to school children, and incidents like these raise serious concerns about food safety and hygiene in government schools.

Following the incident, parents and local citizens have raised serious concerns over the quality of the mid-day meal provided in government schools.

Parents insist that children’s health cannot be compromised and have urged authorities to conduct regular quality checks on the food served in schools.

They also demanded strict monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure that children receive safe and nutritious meals.

The district administration has taken the matter seriously and instructed officials to strengthen oversight of the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme.

PM Surya Ghar Yojana lights up thousands of households in Bihar’s Bhagalpur

Patna, Sep 11 (IANS) The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024, is bringing drastic changes in the lives of people by ensuring ease of living in villages as well as towns and empowering lakhs of households with solar power.

In Bihar’s Bhagalpur, hundreds of households have got solar panels installed on their rooftops and utilizing solar energy for their electricity needs.

A couple of PM Surya Ghar Yojana beneficiaries spoke to IANS and shared their experience on using solar power for home usage.

Dance instructor Mithilesh Kumar said: “When I heard that the electricity bill will become zero under PM Surya Ghar Yojana, we started producing our own electricity. We have to only pay the meter charge. In the era of global warming and climate change, solar panels are a great boon for us. We are thankful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the scheme.”

Chartered Accountant Ambrish Agarwal said that he got 8 KW solar panel installed on his rooftop.

Bank manager Sanjeev Kumar, who is also beneficiary of PM Suryaghar Yojana said that earlier he was paying more than Rs 10,000 in electricity bill and that has now reduced to a meager Rs 3,000-Rs 4,000.

He also informed that his bank has taken the lead in aiding people to equip their households with solar power.

According to Assistant Electrical Engineer Pranav Kumar Mishra, there have been applications of 908 consumers in the Bhagalpur Sub-Division Mojihadpur and many of them have started getting solar electricity in their houses at subsidised rates.

Talking about new solar connections, there are 161 applicants in Kahalgaon, 49 in Naugachia, 65 in Nathnagar and 22 in Sultanganj who are set to get advantage of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.

He further informed that the government gives a subsidy of Rs 78,000 for 1 kilowatt to 10 kilowatt. An area of about 100 to 300 square feet is required to install a solar panel of 1 kilowatt to 3 kilowatt on the roof of the house and the costing comes at around Rs 2.5 lakh per unit.

“After bank financing, the government gives subsidy of Rs 78,000. If electricity production exceeds the home consumption, it is automatically exported to the power grid, which is then adjusted in the consumer’s bill,” he stated.

Rs 760 crore boost propels Mandal-Bechraji SIR ahead of Vibrant Gujarat meet

Gandhinagar, Aug 19 (IANS) Ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) scheduled in Mehsana on October 9-10, the Mandal-Bechraji Special Investment Region (MBSIR) is witnessing rapid progress on key infrastructure projects, strengthening its position as the growth hub of North Gujarat.

The MBSIR is a large industrial zone in north Gujarat, spread across parts of Ahmedabad, Mehsana, and Surendranagar districts. It was notified under Gujarat’s Special Investment Region (SIR) Act, 2009, and is one of the state’s most ambitious industrial hubs. The region covers over 100 sq km and is strategically located near the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC).

MBSIR is best known as an automobile and engineering hub — major players like Maruti Suzuki, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, and Suzuki Motorcycles have manufacturing plants there, along with hundreds of ancillary and auto-component industries.

The Gujarat government is developing it with infrastructure — wide roads, water supply and drainage systems, effluent treatment plants, and logistics facilities, with a focus on sustainability and global investment readiness.

The Mandal Bechraji Special Investment Region Development Authority (MBSIRDA) has accelerated work on multiple development initiatives. Completed projects include the construction of 33 km of internal roads at an investment of around Rs 190 crore.

Additionally, Rs 500 crore worth of town-planning roads spanning 66 km are under construction, equipped with water supply, sewerage, and effluent disposal pipelines for industrial use.

To further boost industrial infrastructure, MBSIRDA has lined up projects worth Rs 70 crore, including a 20 MLD (million litres per day) water treatment plant, three sewage treatment plants with capacities ranging from 4 MLD to 15 MLD, and a 19 MLD Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP). These initiatives underline Gujarat’s commitment to building world-class, sustainable industrial ecosystems.

The Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) is a new series of regional investment summits launched by the Gujarat government as a precursor to the 2027 Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS). Designed to spotlight local strengths, VGRC will be held across four regions — North Gujarat (Mehsana, Oct 2025), Saurashtra-Kutch (Rajkot, Jan 2026), South Gujarat (Surat, Apr 2026), and Central Gujarat (Vadodara, Jul 2026).

Each conference will focus on the region’s key sectors, such as agriculture, dairy, food processing, and automobiles in North Gujarat, while also promoting industries like petrochemicals, gems, and technology in other regions. With active participation from policymakers, industry leaders, and entrepreneurs, VGRC aims to strengthen Gujarat’s regional economies, attract investments, and align local growth with the state’s broader vision of inclusive and sustainable development.
