Andhra: Jagan to go ahead with visit to Palnadu district despite police curbs

Amaravati, June 17 (IANS) YSR Congress Party President and former chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will visit Palnadu district on June 18 to console the family of a party functionary who committed suicide due to alleged police harassment.

Despite police imposing restrictions, Jagan Mohan Reddy will go ahead with his visit to Rentapalla in Palnadu district to console the family members of YSRCP leader and deputy sarpanch Nagamalleswara Rao.

YSRCP leaders said that Jagan will travel by road from his Tadepalli residence in Amaravati to Rentapalla. After consoling the family of Nagamalleswara Rao, Jagan will unveil his statue.

The opposition party alleged that the TDP-led coalition government is trying to create hurdles for their leader’s visit. It made it clear that the former chief minister will go ahead with his visit.

The YSRCP has condemned the indifference of the police in giving permission to Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit to Rentapalla.

Speaking to the media after meeting the Superintendent of Police at Palnadu on Tuesday, former minister Vidadala Rajini, former MLAs Kasu Mahesh Reddy and Gopireddy Srinivasa Reddy, and Sattenapalli YSRCP in-charge Gajjala Sudheer Bhargav Reddy stated that the government is misusing police to block Jagan’s visit under the pretext of security concerns.

The leaders revealed that police were strangely allowing only 100 people to accompany Jagan, citing security. Despite this, they asserted that YS Jagan will go ahead with the visit, regardless of whether police permission is granted. They made it clear that the convoy will directly reach the bereaved family’s house without any disruption. They emphasised that once YS Jagan gives his word, he never backs down, and he will meet the family even if he has to go alone.

They also stated that the party cannot stop people from coming, as Jagan is always with people. “The police have been harassing him in a multitude of ways to stop him as the coalition government is conspiring to foil his visit, but he will be in Rentapalla of Sattenapalli mandal,” they said.

They alleged that the coalition government is scared of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s popularity.

Palnadu police imposed restrictions on Jagan’s visit in view of the stone pelting during his recent visit to Prakasam district. Jagan had accused Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu of deliberately provoking people against his visit to Podili in Prakasam district.

He had visited Podili to meet distressed Tobacco farmers and offer them support, as they have been denied fair prices.

“Over 40,000 farmers and locals joined me in solidarity. To divert attention from the issue at hand, Chandrababu Naidu connived to send about 40 TDP workers to disrupt the meeting and provoke violence by pelting stones along our route. Thankfully, the farmers and public showed great restraint and did not retaliate against the acute assaults by TDP goons,” Jagan Mohan Reddy wrote on the social media platform ‘X’.

New Delhi, June 10 (IANS) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claim alleging electoral malpractice during the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections has sparked a fresh political debate, with data analysts and political observers pointing out glaring inconsistencies in his argument.

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha alleged that the voter lists were manipulated to benefit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which emerged victorious in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls held months after the Lok Sabha elections.

Central to his claim is the assertion that the number of registered voters jumped from 9.29 crore during the Lok Sabha elections to 9.70 crore in time for the Assembly polls, suggesting what he called “match-fixing” through voter list inflation.

Analysts argue that this pattern of increased electorates between Lok Sabha and Assembly elections is neither new nor unprecedented — nor has it exclusively benefited the BJP. In fact, historical data from previous election cycles show similar or even steeper increases in voter numbers that coincided with victories for the Congress-led alliance.

The data from the past shared by the data-focused X handle infoindata presents a counter-narrative. The numbers show that substantial increases in voter numbers have occurred in past election cycles across both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Maharashtra, often coinciding with electoral victories for the Congress-led alliance.

In 2009, for instance, the electorate increased by 69.88 lakh (10.59 pc) in Maharashtra ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, during which the Congress-led alliance secured a majority of the seats (25/48). In the Assembly elections that followed the same year, the voter count rose by 30.14 lakh (4.13 pc), again resulting in a Congress-led win (144/288).

A similar pattern was observed in 2004, when the number of voters went up by 61.36 lakh (10.79 pc) in the Lok Sabha elections, during which the Congress-led alliance won 23 out of 48 seats. In the subsequent Assembly elections, voters increased by 29.54 lakh (4.69 pc) and Congress secured 152 out of 288 seats.

Even in the 2019 Assembly elections, where the Congress-led alliance won 158 seats, there was a rise in the voter list by 11.61 lakh. In the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, voters increased by 9.51 lakh, and the Congress-led alliance won 33 out of 48 seats.

Most notably, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, voter registration went up by 32.23 lakh (3.59 pc) in Maharashtra. Far from being disadvantaged, the Congress-led alliance performed strongly, winning 30 out of 48 seats in the state. This trend raises serious questions about the logic behind Rahul Gandhi’s allegations.

If a rise in voter registration amounts to electoral manipulation, observers argue, then Congress must also explain its own past victories in years where the increase in electors was even more significant.

Moreover, if an increase in voter count is to be seen as suspicious or indicative of manipulation, then Congress must also account for its own historical successes that coincided with even higher increases in electorates. In 2009, for example, the increase was more than 69 lakh — significantly higher than the 41 lakh increase Gandhi flagged in 2024 — and yet Congress celebrated a resounding victory then, say observers.

Experts point out that updates to electoral rolls are a routine function of the Election Commission and are expected in a dynamic and growing democracy. These include additions of first-time voters, corrections of previous errors, and inclusion of previously excluded eligible citizens. In a state like Maharashtra, with high migration, urbanisation, and population growth, such increases are not only plausible but expected.

Political analysts are questioning the internal consistency of Gandhi’s argument. If rising voter numbers are to be treated with suspicion only when the BJP wins, but not when the Congress-led alliance benefits, the claim loses credibility. Critics argue that such statements risk undermining public confidence in democratic institutions without substantive evidence.

The data suggests that the rise in voter numbers in 2024 is not an anomaly, nor is it without precedent. Past elections won by the Congress-led alliance — often with even larger voter increases — weaken the claim that the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election was manipulated through artificial inflation of the electorate. Without concrete proof of wrongdoing, the rise in voter registration alone does not justify allegations of match-fixing.

War is not solution, wisdom is: UP Minister Sanjay Nishad on Pak’s provocations after Pahalgam attack

New Delhi, April 29 (IANS) Following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjay Nishad strongly criticised Pakistan for its provocative rhetoric and called for “wisdom over war.”

Speaking to IANS, on Pakistan’s simultaneous talk of peace and threats of nuclear warfare, Nishad said, “People of Pakistan are our own, but war is not the solution, wisdom is. Intelligent people should step forward. Pakistan must accept wisdom. If Pakistan forcibly starts a war, they must realise today’s India is different from the India of the past.”

He also made a cultural and historical claim regarding Kashmir, stating, “Pakistan Occupied Kashmir should separate and return to India. Kashmir belongs to Kashyap; it’s named after the sage Kashyap Rishi. How can it be part of Pakistan?”

On the recent Uttar Pradesh government action against illegal madrasas, particularly in the wake of the terror attack, Nishad justified the move by saying: “If something runs illegally then illegal activities are bound to happen there. If society and the law do not recognise them, they are illegal. That’s why these actions are being taken.”

Hitting out at the Congress for questioning the government’s handling of the terror attack, Nishad said the party had no moral ground to speak.

“Congress ruled for 67 years and failed to provide solutions. They did family politics and sowed the seeds of many problems. Now they expect answers? Those who fought for freedom face barriers today, while those who colluded with the British were uplifted, they (Congress) shaped such flawed policies,” he claimed.

Taking a jab at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for not visiting the families of the victims of the terror attack, Nishad remarked, “Had the victims belonged to a particular community, Akhilesh would have rushed to meet them. These people only do vote-bank politics.”

Jharkhand: Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana secures lives of deprived communities

Ranchi, June 17 (IANS) Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), the insurance scheme launched during the first tenure of the Narendra Modi government, has brought immense improvement in the lives of socially and economically backward people in the country.

Launched on May 9, 2015, the scheme is providing affordable life insurance to low-income groups at very low premiums. An insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh is given in case of any unforeseen event at an annual premium of just Rs 436.

The scheme has provided a secure future for the tribal dominated areas of Latehar district in Jharkhand. Many subscribers of the scheme have registered for the PMJJBY scheme here and are also benefiting from it.

With the help of Bank Mitras and village-level committees, this scheme has reached almost every village. Many locals spoke to IANS about the positive shift that this scheme brought into their lives.

Pramila Devi of Balumath block told IANS, “My husband and I had taken Jeevan Jyoti insurance. The deductible was Rs 436. My husband passed away after one year. It became very difficult for me to run the house and take care of the children. I got Rs 2 lakh under the scheme, which made it a little easier to run the house and take care of the children. We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this scheme.”

Balumath Sakhi Mandal member Soni Devi said, “Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana is not only providing security to backward classes but also giving them the confidence that the government is with them.”

Latehar’s District Manager Rajiv Kumar Mandilwara informed that 1,19,488 people subscribed themselves for the PMJJBY, and the special thing is that people between 18 and 50 years of age are covered under the insurance.

“The annual insurance period is from June 1 to May 31. The premium is Rs 436. If a person associated with the scheme dies between the ages of 18 and 50, financial assistance is given to his family,” he informed.
