Ashok Gehlot highlights development projects delayed by BJP govt in Rajasthan

Jaipur, March 23 (IANS) Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot, on Monday, unveiled a new digital series from his X account, striking a sharp political and emotional chord.

Titled “Intezar Shastra” (The science of waiting), the series aims to spotlight projects that, according to Gehlot’s team, are fully ready for public use but remain unopened due to petty politics being played by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government.

In the opening chapter, the former Chief Minister sets the tone with a pointed critique of the current BJP government in Rajasthan, accusing it of turning governance into an exercise in delay.

Gehlot says that the BJP’s “Intezar Shastra” is not just administrative inertia — it is actively harming the aspirations and future of Rajasthan’s youth.

At the centre of this first episode is the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Governance and Social Sciences (MIGSS) — a flagship institution conceptualised during Gehlot’s tenure as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

He shares the video of the building from his X account and says, “Modeled on prestigious institutions like Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai) and MIT School of Government (Pune), MIGSS was envisioned as a hub for world-class education in governance and social sciences. Built at a cost of Rs 233 crore on Jaipur’s JLN Marg, the institute has reportedly been ready since 2024.”

Gehlot alleged that MIGSS remains unopened till now.

In a strongly worded appeal, the former Chief Minister urges the current BJP government to rise above political differences and dedicate what he calls a “temple of learning” to the youth of the state without further delay.

“An ordeal of waiting that the people of Rajasthan have endured for over two and a quarter years.”

Earlier, on Monday, Gehlot announced the launch of series and said, “Coming soon… Intezaar Shastra — hinting that more such examples will follow in future chapters.”

The first part of the series was released on Monday at 6 p.m., marking what appears to be the beginning of a sustained political narrative built around governance delays, public infrastructure, and youth opportunities in Rajasthan.

Gehlot’s team, speaking to IANS, said the aim of the series is highlight the significant work done during his tenure as Chief Minister, which remains unused due to politics being played by the current BJP-led state government.

This series will run for around two weeks, they told IANS.

Janakpuri pit death: Biker’s family alleges negligence, recalls last call

New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS) A grieving family has alleged gross negligence after 25-year-old Kamal Dhayani died when his bike plunged into a deep pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in West Delhi’s Janakpuri, with his mother and brother recalling his final moments and blaming the absence of safety measures.

Kamal’s mother, Shanti, said her son had spoken to her shortly before the accident.

“He (Kamal) called me around 12 o’clock and said he was on his way home. After that, I kept calling him, but he didn’t answer,” she said, breaking down.

His brother, Mayank, said Kamal was returning home after completing his office shift in Rohini and was heading towards Palam.

“Everything was fine till he reached Janakpuri. There was a big pit made by the Delhi Jal Board there. There were no barricades, no warnings, and no safety measures at all. My brother fell into it,” he alleged.

According to the police, Kamal’s body and his bike were recovered from the nearly 20-foot-deep pit on Joginder Singh Marg around 8.30 a.m. on Friday with the help of the Fire department.

A case has been registered under relevant sections, and the exact sequence of events is being investigated, police said.

The incident prompted the Delhi government to order a high-level inquiry into the matter.

Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the DJB has been directed to inspect the site, review barricading, signage, traffic management and adherence to safety norms, and fix responsibility wherever lapses are found.

Meanwhile, the DJB said a preliminary inquiry suggested the pit had been barricaded with green mesh, and a committee has been constituted to examine whether all public safety measures were in place.

Any official or contractor found guilty of negligence will face strict action, the DJB added.

The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over road safety and accountability at construction sites across the national capital.

Telangana HC upholds death penalty for five in 2013 Hyderabad bomb blasts case

Hyderabad, April 8 (IANS) The Telangana High Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence to five convicts, including the banned Indian Mujahideen’s (IM) co-founder Yaseen Bhatkal and a Pakistani national, in the 2013 Hyderabad bomb blasts.

A division bench of Justice K. Lakshman and Justice P. Sree Sudhha dismissed the appeals filed by the convicts challenging the order of a special NIA court pronounced in 2016

Apart from Bhatkal alias Ahmed Siddibappa Zaraar and Pakistani national Zia ur Rehman alias Waqas, Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi, Tahseen Akhtar alias Monu, and Aizaz Saeed Shaik alias Aijaz Shaikh were sentenced by the NIA court for offences, including waging war against the nation, criminal conspiracy and murder.

The twin blasts in the Dilsukhnagar area of Hyderabad on February 21, 2013, killed 18 persons, including one unborn child in a mother’s womb, and injured 131 others

The death sentence was pronounced under sections 302 A and 121 of the Indian Penal Code, section 3B Explosive Substance Act and section 16 of the Unlawful Activities Act.

The counsel for one of the convicts, Aijaz Shaikh, said they would file an appeal in the Supreme Court. He said they would file an appeal after going through the High Court order.

Two of the convicts are lodged in Cherlapally Jail in Hyderabad, while others are lodged in other jails in the country as they are facing trial in other terror cases.

Yaseen Bhatkal is brother of Riyaz Bhatkal, the brain behind the blasts and the main accused, who is absconding and suspected to be hiding in Pakistan. The NIA has already issued an Interpol Red Corner notice for him.

Bhatkal brothers are from Bhatkal town of Karnataka, while Rehman is from Mustafabad of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Asadullah Akhtar from Uttar Pradesh while Tahseen Akhtar and Aizaz Saeed are residents of Bihar and Maharashtra respectively.

During the hearing on the appeals by the convicts in the High Court, the counsel of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) defended the death penalty on the ground that the accused planned and executed bomb blasts, killing many people and later went on to carry out another bombing.

The investigating agency had filed three charge sheets in the case. Charges were framed against the five accused on July 16, 2015 and the trial commenced on August 24 the same year.

The prosecution examined a total of 157 witnesses during the trial.

The two blasts, with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), occurred within a span of six seconds at a distance of 100 meters in crowded places in the shopping area Dilsukhnagar on the evening of February 21, 2013. While the first blast took place at the 107 bus stop in Dilsukhnagar, the second was near A1 Mirchi Centre.

Vice-Prez Radhakrishnan to attend Mizoram, Tripura University convocations on March 7-8

Aizawl/Agartala, March 1 (IANS) Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan will be the chief guest at the convocations of two central universities — Mizoram University and Tripura University — on March 7 and 8, officials said on Sunday.

According to officials, the Vice-President will address the 20th Convocation of Mizoram University on March 7. The following day, March 8, he will attend and address the 14th Convocation of Tripura University.

In Aizawl, Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena chaired a preparatory meeting to review arrangements for the Vice-President’s visit to the state.

During the meeting, representatives of various departments discussed their respective responsibilities and coordinated efforts to ensure the smooth conduct of the programme. Key logistical and protocol-related matters concerning the reception and overall schedule were also deliberated upon.

The Vice-President will be the chief guest at the 14th Convocation of Tripura University on March 8.

A university official said that the convocation ceremony could not be held over the past two years, 2024 and 2025.

During the ceremony, certificates, degrees, gold medals and PhD degrees will be conferred upon eligible students. As many as 283 students from various departments will receive gold medals, while 149 research scholars will be awarded PhD degrees at the forthcoming convocation.

The Vice-President will inaugurate the convocation ceremony at the university campus in Suryamaninagar, on the outskirts of the state capital, Agartala.

Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha and University Chancellor Ahmad Javed will also address the gathering.

Earlier, the university’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Shaymal Das and Acting Registrar Samir Kumar Shill met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and discussed various aspects related to the convocation arrangements.

Tripura University was established in October 1987 and was upgraded to a Central University on July 2, 2007, under the Tripura University Act, 2006, enacted by Parliament. At present, 64 colleges are affiliated with the university.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Education is reportedly aiming to complete the selection process and appoint a new Vice-Chancellor at the earliest.
